Visit NORWAY ๐ง๐ป Oslo โข Bergen Street Art โข Galleries, by Fะฏ on Jun 25, 2014 21:43:12 GMT 1, Thought i would make a thread to discuss what people think to the street art movement in Norway. what is the reason why it it is kicking off their and sprouting new artists?
i keep an eye on things quite a bit and it has been surprising this year at the popularity of not only dolk but other guys like Pรธbel, whatson Dot doing the rounds on here.
If you follow all of the norwegian art pages on facebook you can see who is up and coming. this is no hype, im just generally interested to see what peoples thoughts are and if theres anyone you like or to keep an eye out for whilst it is still affordable.
Whilst the same artists are still about in the UK like Dface, Walker etc... I feel they have stagnated. i do not include banksy in that, he is his own man. There is room for fresh stuff.
In my opinion the scene will keep growing over there. I read china is picking up a fair bit as well.
i will start... STEIN seems to be getting into a few online galleries and shows and gets quite a few outings on instagram and facebook shares in Norway...
This image is going to hopefully be a print soon and i will be picking it up. its a wall friendly image, its got humour and its simple. The canvas versions look nice...

So your personal taste is not for this thread if you do not like this style of street art. I was not suggesting a critique of norwegian style, im asking what people are looking out for if they are following it.

For me there's an honesty about the Norwegian work that doesn't always exist in stencil art in the gallery format - a lot of stuff that's released is clearly on the basis of it being a safe commercial image rather than anything else. I also think they're often funnier than a lot of others.
Atle Ostrem is always doing interesting work that I enjoy and I think deserves the growing interest in his work.
I also think Bot Stencil could come up with something really neat. I'd love to get hold of one of the Colourful Music prints but I think they're all hidden in Norwegian collections.

Have one of his prints and originals on paper and they are still very affordable. Also keeping tabs an Hama Woods who I think has already produced some good works and will only get better.

I don't get it. This genre is in need of something truly fresh. If something half original comes along, look out
Probably why dran is in such demand. People are realizing that he is one of the most original artist in this genre in a long time.
Too bad he's all but done selling publicically .

You have to imagine it is just kicking off in these countries, so if you think its derivative or not is not relevant as theres new collectors. Our opinions are skewed as we are used to it all, but i genuinely think theres some great stuff around if you still like that style.
Regarding the norwegian hardcore - nothing personally to me, just makes me laugh as i understand having been to the country in norway what it is saying. There is nothing to read into or complex about any pieces from dolk either, it is just the style to be fairly friendly and fun.
I also do not see anyone from here doing this stuff anymore, the old ones like eelus, dface etc changed styles and nick walker just went up his own arse. Banksy does not sell nor is affordable. So you can see why this gap has opened. I think its still a good thing.
besides can we keep this thread on track, it is not intended to be a critique of the art posted and style. it is to discuss why people think its getting bigger in other countries and to show new artists work.

Visit NORWAY ๐ง๐ป Oslo โข Bergen Street Art โข Galleries, by Deleted on Jun 26, 2014 8:09:08 GMT 1, Freerange is right. If you clocked onto Stencil Revolution back in 2003 you may find everything Norwegian looking a little derivative, as those into stencils in the 80's found this new breed, but it's mainly because they're friends or have shared studios etc. Stencil art is still by far the most popular, democratic, inspirational and influential genre in Street Art there is. The amount of groups and forums and practitioners is healthier than ever and the diversity of styles is now huge.

I think there's a lot of diversity in street art (from Roa, to Phlegm, to Slinkachu, to Sam3, Blu...you could go on and on) and I like some of the stencil artists, but haven't been able to understand what makes one stencil artists different from another other than subject matter (which is fairness also tends to have the same down-with-the-man type vibe to it) and technique with cutting/spraying.
And do you think stencil art is more democratic than tagging?

I think it's cool that several other stencil-artists have popped up in the wake of their popularity like Martin Whatson, Dot Dot Dot, Stein and so on.. Just because Mark Rothko or Jackson Pollock made some of the first abstract paintings don't mean that all the artists today making abstract paintings are copycats..

This is an art forum and I'd be a bit concerned if we weren't allowed to critique, never mind criticise, the art. Plus, your initial post did ask what people thought of the street art movement in Norway.
A lot of people see little difference between the work of Dolk, Pobel, Dot Dot Dot, Whatson, Stein and Bot but it's been suggested that the Norwedian scene is quite diverse. I think previous posters are just asking for examples of this diversity apart from Atle Ostrem and this seems like a fair request to me.

If you're asking why the Norwegian movement is kicking off the answer is money. People are saw the work of Dolk starting to catch on, are mates with him, have a bit of artistic inclination and decided it was better than an office job.
There's no secret. This isn't a huge revolution of talent. There's nothing new.
I'm sure nuart bringing the festival to Norway introduced many to the scene and offered a different life path.
It is all very similar and would love to hear what the difference is between dolk, whatson, ..., bot, stein, etc.

Visit NORWAY ๐ง๐ป Oslo โข Bergen Street Art โข Galleries, by Gard on Jun 26, 2014 14:44:51 GMT 1, Why it's kicking of is because photoshop is easy and everyone in Norway is going bonkers for stencil art. I don't think this is a thing only happening in Norway, but it's a bit easier to stand out in a small country like Norway. The competition isn't as big as it is in London. We also love our local artists and many can't spot the difference between a Dolk and Dot or any other stencil artist so they just love it because of the way it's made. I'm not saying that all stencil art look the same, but for an untrained eye it does so they don't care if they get a Stein or Dolk. They are edgy for getting street art.
An argument that has been made over and over again is that it's hard to spot the difference between stencil artists. They use the same medium so they must be the same artists. That argument can be used on almost all of the art world. When I see art at fairs I often think that the work in question is by another artist. I saw works by Jonathan Horowitz at a lot of the booths at Art Basel and immediately thought it was a Lichtenstein. (Picture of his work under). Or take a look at the Elmgreen and Dragseth work under. A friend from the forum instantly recognized it as a Mark Jenkins work. Or take a look at photography that's a hard world to maneuver through and getting the artist right every time.
Stencil art/street art can be said to be the art of our time and it speaks to more people. It's easy to understand so people previously not interested in art can find a lot of the motives interesting and fun without any art knowledge. In 10 years time I think a lot of will be forgotten and only the very best will be left, but for now it's easy to ride on the street art hype.
Edit: I'm not negative towards stencil art, Dolk and Dot are some of my favorites artists.
