Anywhere to learn creation of stencils? PS etc, by Sohoria on Jun 30, 2014 21:19:53 GMT 1, Hi,
Apologies if this has already been asked but couldn't find anything when using the search feature. I have the next few months away from work and really wanted to see if there is any such place that teaches the creation of stencils using photoshop or any other photo editing software?
Looking for training on complex designs from creation on Photoshop to cutting / learning about different spray can effects etc.
thinking have the time off now, so would be good to try something new and learn about how to structure from design to implementation. I thought here would be the best place to ask, or someone could point me in the right direction.
have tried using resin for layered artwork but even outside ended up giving me a head ache!

Anywhere to learn creation of stencils? PS etc, by Sohoria on Jun 30, 2014 21:49:33 GMT 1, eschiff - Something like that sounds great if training included preparation via editing software. Will take a look at their website if they have longer training courses. One week training would be something ideal or even longer but I guess depends on cost also.

Anywhere to learn creation of stencils? PS etc, by Sohoria on Jun 30, 2014 21:58:06 GMT 1, Someones Brain - I did have a look at a few youtube videos and was actually pretty impressed with someone doing a Monroe print but think he was using different software.
I like multi stencil artwork and more complex the better so be nice to try and fill up some of my blank walls once I know how to do it. Have the time now and don't want it to be something years from now thinking should have tried. My learning curb for resin artwork is always wear a mask and gloves and know the stuff really does stink :/ but appreciate the suggestions.

Anywhere to learn creation of stencils? PS etc, by David Soukup on Jul 1, 2014 4:00:59 GMT 1, Just do it. Print something out, try it, and if it fails, learn from it and try again. And again, and again. Youtube videos and other people's suggestions will lead you to do it 'their' way, which will in turn look like 'their' work. 5 minutes in photoshop playing with the brightness and contrast sliders and the posterize effect is the poor mans way of making a stencil but it's the best place to start (how I started). People think there is one 'right way' of making stencils, and there's hundreds of different approaches. In time, you learn the groove, and the quickest way to make what you want with the smallest amount of work now.
I've had other stencil artists look at my work, and can't figure out how I do it (layering order, etc.) and I sometimes look at their process and say the same thing... it happens. I met another respected stencil artist and upon watching him work, I asked him 'why do you do it that way, why not this way?' His response 'why would I do it that way, it makes absolutely no sense..?' To each his own, really.
I think learning how to cut, and how to hold a can is far more important than what you can do on a computer.
Best of luck, and although stencils bring me some of greatest feelings of accomplishment I've ever had in my life, sometimes, they'll drive you bonkers.

Anywhere to learn creation of stencils? PS etc, by Deleted on Jul 1, 2014 7:12:00 GMT 1, CUTOUT STENCIL - Plenty of different examples online on how to do a basic cutout on photoshop. I like to separate each layer individually after the cutout (a bit like in this 2 part tutorial) and clean all the mess (like in the vid, layer selection -> inverse -> clean). But there is one thing, I noticed there are very few tutorial about bridges... and most of tutorial will spray white over black (fine if you have good white can) although but I prefer to use a cache for the white (no spray) and go from light to dark colors. I then print each layer/cut in black from the same printer with same settings (it is important) in A4 and then attach the paper together to get large format (I use photoshop to print but there is small tool also called posterit or something that does exactly that online)
OUTLINE STENCIL - To do an outline stencil, check this tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJTBMbYovpQ - in Spanish)... there is a trick at 0.20s, you copy the layer and invert the color, change to color dodge, then add a gaussian blur... best method I have tried to get outlines.
STUFF YOU USUALLY FORGET AT FIRST STAGE - Set your image size to standard frame size (important) and think about the white border (no borders, similar borders or larger border at bottom for signature). Make one or two crosses somewhere on each layer to align your stencil (and don't forget to put a Post-it on the artwork where you spray the cross so that cross is not sprayed on stencil). And it is always good to seat and check your layers before cutting before you will realised that with basic cutout, you often spray where it is not necessary (why spraying light grey + dark grey if at the end you put a black on top of it ?), that's why separating layers and checking for bridges or unecessary spray is good (especially if you chose the light-to-dark color route).
Otherwise as David Soukup said, a 5mn photoshop is good, contrast + posterize and you are done... print it and adjust the cutting as you cut... which is a more artistic approach... you can even do a basic cutout and redraw the image yourself.
Material for cutting is important... many use mylar paper or cardboard... acetone paper is fine but bit hard, so cardboard is usually preferred (although cardboard is not transparent). As for me, I use cheap laminated paper (the paper you use to laminate document), I separate the sheets and since it is transparent, I stick it to stencil paper and directly cut. Downside, it is very thin and fly easily so not for outside or vertical spraying.
For the spraying, it is all about fun

There again Fairey makes money out of it so why not. Fairey is the most obvious example... You would be surprised by number of artists using machine cut stencils, and by the number of people surrounding them (fellow artist, gallerists, etc.) who pretend this is hand-cut art . There is a French guy called Jeff, he is producing a lot and many heavily detailed stencils; to good to be true !! Another one called Logan recently moved from hand cut to machine cut stencils

What kind of machines to cut stencils are you talking about? I mean, seroiusly, I never had the idea machines could be used for that. I'm naive though (sometimes, says my wife).

@ploppi - I'm guessing you only like artwork that comes from a paintbrush or sculpted by hand?
Ps - I have seen a few workshops running but none yet for photorealistic spraycan work.
Might visit the Custard Factory later to see who is around as it has been a while but thanks for the links!

A real SLOW machine !!
These are called "stencil cutting machine" and there is a wide range of product price, from the small manual home one (usually used by guys doing tshirts) to professional one that can cut large size and thick stuff (advertiser use this one).
You are so right, I am also very naive... but then my wife (who do lot of sewing + paperwax/freezer paper DIY stencil) wanted to buy one but I refused. And if you wonder what freezer paper stencil is, ask your wife

Anywhere to learn creation of stencils? PS etc, by iamzero on Jul 1, 2014 17:56:30 GMT 1, Definitely the best advice is keep trying until you find a system that you're comfortable with. Sometimes I paint the black layer first and sometimes a mid grey first then darker to lighter or the other way... Just depends on the subject. Illustrator works for me because once its drawn as a vector I can resize the image and flick through the layers to work out bridges and order.
