Anywhere to learn creation of stencils? PS etc, by Deleted on Jul 4, 2014 13:19:46 GMT 1, Photo shop and computer cut stencils what an artistic combination. There again Fairey makes money out of it so why not. Fairey is the most obvious example... You would be surprised by number of artists using machine cut stencils, and by the number of people surrounding them (fellow artist, gallerists, etc.) who pretend this is hand-cut art . There is a French guy called Jeff, he is producing a lot and many heavily detailed stencils; to good to be true !! Another one called Logan recently moved from hand cut to machine cut stencils In some ways photo shop and digital art goes very well with being produced as ltd editions if it is original and creative.
It looks very slick and perfect and does make hand painted and hand cut stencils look less perfect.
Thats fine as long as the artist is honest and gives a description explaining the technique and methods used to create and make the finished art.
Often people use computer made stencils and let people think it's all hand drawn and hand cut.
I would have thought a good way to learn to make stencils is to print out or draw some images and see what you can come up with by hand.
If you want to make ltd editions using photo shop and a computer you could do what Fairey has done and just steal other images or you could come up with something else.
Soroyama uses stencils by hand and so has Ray Mumford years ago.

Anywhere to learn creation of stencils? PS etc, by Sohoria on Jul 4, 2014 14:22:22 GMT 1, Soroyama is a site quite different to things normally see but interesting artworks shown.
I would have thought majority of things done now are done by computer and then cut by hand? Even learning by using a computer and then moving over to doing by hand. It's all interesting to learn though!
Think next on my list will be spray paints! Always hear Montana spray paints normally used so I'm excited for the moment
