I don't drink the stuff but I am told by my learned wife that it depends on what coffee you like. She has a Tassimo and raves about it

I use a seperate hitachi grinder and do it fresh for each serving of coffee. Currently have an old Krups 964 with a steamer that go for about £20 on ebay - built like tanks, no fiddly bits or crap to go wrong

for travel, we take an aeropress and a battery grinder for the beans. I ususally take Cuban estate beans as they travel well and are not overly chemicaled like some some of the fancier stuff

I hate to say it, but spending more than a ton of coffee making equipment doesnt make any difference to the output, it just looks more stylish/ nice

Another vote for the Gaggia Classic. Industrial build quality.

Have a rancilio silva. Have had it for about 10 years and it makes excellent coffee. A bit of work making coffee this way though, but when you do bother the reward is superb tasting coffee☺. I think with every expresso machine you really need a good grinder too.

I am really into my coffee member of a coffee club where each month I get 4x60g of beans delivered it's from coffee cavern. I have bur hand grinder from amazon it's got great reviews but can't remember name right now also I use an aeropress it's great for one coffee at a time and is no mess. I have had expensive ish machines before but love the aeropress

French press is quiet messy that's the beauty of the Areopress so easy to clean

Bought a French press and a grinder. Tbh I think I tastes better than the old stuff I had, and much cheaper.

Ok... So what are you looking to get out of your machine and what are you willing to spend?

Depending on the answer to that, the recommendation changes heavily.

First and foremost -- Fresh roasted whole beans at all times. Find a local roaster (Or a good third gen coffee shop) and start figuring out what type of beans meet your fancy. Make sure you're not using beans that have expired and dried out.

Next -- Grinder. You need a Burr Grinder. You can get a nice Gaggia MDF for cheap, but it does a great job. You just need to dial it in properly. If you want to spend some real cash -- look into a Mazzer or a Compak.

Last -- The machine... If you're someone who likes different types of coffee, and not just espresso, grab an Aeropress, a French Press, and a Moka Pot. This will give you several options that will get very strong results, especially when you pair them with Fresh Beans and a Burr Grinder. However, if you're as much of an asshole as I am about coffee, look for a nice machine. A good espresso machine will cost you around $1,500 - $3,000 I personally bought the La Spaziale Mini Vivaldi II, it's a bit different than most machines because it's got a 53mm porta filter.

And even more last(ly) -- If you do buy a proper machine. Spend some cash on a proper Tamper as well. You can't make a good espresso without properly tamping your beans.
