PRO176 "Astral Wave" New Print, by minibear on Mar 24, 2015 17:35:31 GMT 1, Taking another artist's work and painting it larger is not the same as sampling, or even collage. If you're not creating something new, then you're just ripping off someone else's idea. Ask Robin Thicke ! last one (I'm bored at work)

PRO176 "Astral Wave" New Print, by Winter on Mar 24, 2015 18:03:58 GMT 1, Artists copying artists, artists being influenced by artists, artists ripping artists off. Such an old topic on this forum! Jerseyfresh as a brand new member it probably explains why you are so angry as you haven't endured years of this wrangling. I could start a thread giving very famous examples but I can't be bothered to go through it all again. Try this for starters www.stuckism.com/Hirst/StoleArt.html

PRO176 "Astral Wave" New Print, by Mirus Gallery Poesia on Mar 24, 2015 22:27:01 GMT 1, I really like the work of Pro176 (even the paintings we're discussing here) otherwise I wouldn't really care about this thread to be honest. So I fully understand why people like 886Geary and winter would want to defend him. The man is obviously very talented. I don't think his entire body of work is on trial here. I understand it might not be an easy thing to do but I don't think it's too much to ask for some form of rectification. Saying it's ok cause other artists (Hirst) steal too isn't helping either. I think his overall body of work is being questioned and this is why I am responding, I think we all heard the argument on both sides and I think everyone has some good points even if I cant agree. I am not defending the use of Helata as a reference but things happen and artists use reference time and time again without attributing credit as Haleta clearly never attributed his work to the original artist whether he made something new or not. And I was referencing Kirby to Pro's influence and using it as a general name. Haleta actually said he referenced Juan Garcia Lopez.
Also again I am not condoning anyone stealing but things happen and unless their is provable malicious intent than its a mute point, Pro has obviously been put on notice and is taking down the images in order to make sure people can judge him on his paintings not referenced from Helata which is a ton. I dont know if he will come forward I think people handle things differently, he obviously isnt on the forum to defend himself and thats why I am here trying to make a point from my perspective.
I think people are also really underestimating what Pro does to his work and using the imagery to create new fresh paintings. These paintings are intense in person and embody a whole different genre than Collage or even comic book art. This extra layer is another reason I have to appreciate with the artist has done with the aesthetic adding to the conversation, not just taking from it.
Juan Garcia Lopez

I wasn't defending him, just trying to introduce some balance in this thread as it is very common in the world of art. Pro 176 has made a name for himself for his grafitti from what I've seen.

PRO176 "Astral Wave" New Print, by Jersey Phresh on Mar 25, 2015 13:42:46 GMT 1, 886Geary represents Pro176, so of course he is defending him till the end.. Haleta did not use Juan Garcia Lopez for his collage work, good try but wrong.. Haleta hand cut shards of comics and created layer upon layer of collage, producing originals that often took months to complete. The finished product is often smaller than 12" x 12".
Pro found scanned, completed works on Haleta's archive site, and used as his own work. Even stating in bios he was groundbreaking and original in his compositions.
Ask Pro to identify the series used in all these collage works, he will be dumbfounded despite his love for American comics. All images where Pro176 used Haleta's work (way more than 5% that Poesia stated) were removed. Why would he do such a thing if it wasn't wrong??

I would like to ask you one final question: Did you start following Michael Mykola Haleta's comic book art FaceBook fan page two years ago?
