JR's "Unframed" Exhibit On The South Side Of Ellis Island, by dreadnatty on Oct 3, 2014 23:48:30 GMT 1, A Look At JR's "Unframed" Exhibit On The South Side Of Ellis Island
gothamist.com/2014/10/03/unframed_jr_ellis_island.php#photo-1
Yesterday Ellis Island's historic south side was opened to the public, with plans to invite small touring groups to visit into next year. While the abandoned buildings sit amongst an overgrown landscape and old, rusting equipment, there are some new additions. Artist JR has pasted up historic life size photographs around the empty buildings, as part of his ongoing "Unframed" project, which extends off the islandโhis "intent is to evoke a sense of time and place and give context to the human lives that were touched by their time at Ellis Island." We stopped by early yesterday morning for a preview of the work (which will remain until it naturally disappears)โclick through for photographer Sam Horine's shots. Tickets for the guided tours are on sale through Save Ellis Island and Statue Cruises. (You will also be able to buy tickets for hard hat tours of the unrestored buildings, which has never been offered before.)

JR's "Unframed" Exhibit On The South Side Of Ellis Island, by tas on Oct 6, 2014 21:46:50 GMT 1, Just got back from the tour and I'm still speechless. JR's work is nice but so minor compared to the other sights you will see on this 1 1/2 hour tour. It's absolutely beautiful and I highly recommend checking it out. I believe tickets are sold out until mid November but according to the tour guide there is no end date at this time.
Here is a gallery of some images I took. Please excuse the cell phone pictures. Unfortunately, I spend all my money on prints so I can't afford a fancy camera.
