I need advice on Banksy purchase, by lucky7 on Oct 17, 2014 11:54:44 GMT 1, Hello,
I'm sorry if this is not the correct place but I didn't know where to put it, and here more people might see it.
I am about to purchase my first Banksy print and am a little nerveous, so I want to ask for your input.
(I blocked the image itself because the deal is not through yet and the original photo was not mine to post.)
Does the framing on this look ok? Anyway this print might have been damaged in such a frame (I don't know the exact standards used). There's a light ripple on the left side. Should this lower the value?
The seller told me he doesn't know the original owner but he does have COA and it was bought from a reputable place. Should this worry me?
Finally, Should I ask them to remove the print from the frame and roll or better for him to send it like this?
Thanks

I need advice on Banksy purchase, by Ruggs on Oct 17, 2014 12:26:16 GMT 1, I think if you're shelling a fair bit of cash you have every right to inspect it until you are 100% satisfied. If seller is reluctant for whatever reason then walk away.

I need advice on Banksy purchase, by fairplay1974 on Oct 17, 2014 12:26:56 GMT 1, If you don't know the seller, they have no references, cannot tell you who framed this and how (so you could at least try to verify directly) and you can't meet face to face to see this before sale then I'd ask them to remove it from the frame and take photos as a minimum.
Even with the above, framed Banksy prints from sources you don't know and/or trust completely are a risk. It's up to the personal judgement of the buyer from the information you've been given and the price you're paying as to whether that is an acceptable level of risk or not.

Where is the COA from - PC or POW?
I would definitely have it removed from the frame and have it inspected. You should have these framed to archival standards.

I need advice on Banksy purchase, by ABC on Oct 17, 2014 13:56:23 GMT 1, First step is.. if it's got COA (and I take you know what that looks like) then thats a start. Ignore what the frame looks like as thats not to be taken into account IMO. With the WCP's around I'd want it removed. That itself can be a pain, If like mine they are framed properly then they need to go back to the framers to be removed. If the person wants to sell then I'm sure they fully understand this and would respect your wishes. If not then walk away. If it's someone I knew then I'd buy it framed.

I need advice on Banksy purchase, by lucky7 on Oct 17, 2014 15:04:38 GMT 1, Thank you everyone. Very good replies all around. Removing from frame might be a pain (and i kind of don't want to) but probably has to be done. Is there any valid reason not to? I will ask for him to remove from frame before paying and hope he doesn't mind.
Just to clarify: 1. It has Pest Control COA. 2. I don't personally know the seller but he is trustworthy. 3. The seller told me this piece came from an auction house.
What is a WCP stamp?
Seller if you are reading this, hope you are ok with me discussing this here, and thank you for your patience.
Am i missing something here - those pics are of two different prints - one in a gold frame with white matte and the other in a black with grey matte.........
Haha, yes you are missing something. But it is the same print.

West Country Prince. Sells replicas on eBay. Stamped on the back as WCP replica. Concern has been raised that a shady seller (not suggesting yours is - don't know who he/she is) could try to pass off a wcp replica as a real print.

I need advice on Banksy purchase, by lucky7 on Oct 17, 2014 15:23:26 GMT 1, I am convinced of the quality of the seller (very good) and I am sure the print is Legit. My only doubts are: 1. Could there be damage below that frame that nobody has yet seen? 2. Wll I be ok with just the COA or must, must I have my name registered with PestC. 3. Can't I just leave the print in the frame as is and not worry about, further manipulation, reframing, costs, time, etc.

View it carefully.
Make sure you are happy with its condition.
Send the owner's details and the COA details to PC to make sure it checks out.
If you buy it, ask PC to register you as the new owner.
Simples.

I need advice on Banksy purchase, by lucky7 on Oct 17, 2014 15:49:49 GMT 1, Same print.....? ok. You should use the details on the COA and contact Pest Control to verify that registered keeper is the same as the COA. The seller and registered keeper are not necessarily the same so then you are looking for provenance to show how your seller came to be in posession. Ideally you are able to track the life and ownership of this print from the point it was purchased to now and POW will be able to verify the details you have
The second pic is in black and white, that is why it looks like two different things.
What is the fastest way to contact Pest Control? I cant wait 2 months to pull the trigger.
Thanks again. I think I've made up my mind.

Can't I just leave the print in the frame as is and not worry about, further manipulation, reframing, costs, time, etc. Not being funny but for #1 the answer is yes. For all you know some has drawn a massive dick on it under the frame. Until you inspect it all over or see pictures of it you I would assume there's something wrong. When paying so much i would not take the "I guess it's ok" route.
for #3, sure. But if you ever try to sell it off I would say 98% of interested parties will ask for pictures out of the frame or would want to inspect it out of the frame. So best make sure there isn't a massive drawing of a dick on it.
Just be smart, take your time, don't assume it's fine, check it all out. Make sure the COA is legit.
my 2 cents

there are "loads" ( some) of these bnasky prints about and there is 0.001% chance you will be getting it at any kind of special price without good reason. dont spunk thousands on something and then worry about it every time you look at it.there are honest sellers about that will be able to work with you to ensure both parties are happy.

I need advice on Banksy purchase, by dotdot on Oct 17, 2014 20:14:58 GMT 1, Interesting thread,
Framed ! well at least it's not in a tube ! Ripple ! it's fixable , you'll need more pics and do you have a restorer who can do it , note I did not say framer.
The term frame out is invalid ; this work should not be touching the glass , talking of which ; what kind of glass did the seller say .. ?
Is the seller near ? , visit , check it out ...get a feeling for what your about do do. Mistakes on this playing field can lead to suicidal tendencies.
Keep your cool and remember a Banksy is for life not just for Christmas ... ( couldn't resist... Gsoh required a always)
Oh and btw contact pc , advise them of the # make sure it's not contraband , there have been stories here of theft..I'm certain of at least one n. Not sure of the outcome though.

Agreeing with far-cue on this one, unless there are some special Instagram filters on the photos ... edit: I see that you say it is just b&w (but why)
... the print is thinner on the vertical that the horizontal compared to the mount in the 'gold' frame but even or maybe even reversed in the 'grey' frame photo ... unless of course it is an optical illusion
... the framing is v poor imo ... each corner of the frame is made up of two pieces at right angle with separate straight small lengths inbetween ... so you have c34 pieces of wood(?) Making up a 4 sided rectangle ... the filling at each corner and join is not the best either
edit: GL with your purchase it is a lovely print ... I also appreciate that you may wish to change the framing at a different date once you save some more pennies, but at least you have your 1st banksy

I would prefer framed, but then how can I check te condition of the print under the frame? If they take it out, like I asked them, maybe they will ship it out in a tube. So I'm troubled, should I just leave it as it is, framed, or ask them to take it out and risk damage in the shipping?
The seller said "Frame is Acrylic and wood with gold paint."
Unfortunately, the seller is not near, but I trust it.
I will contact PC, but that probably will take a while.
Thank you.
BTW: This print is for christmas, and the next chrstmas, and the next, and the next, and so on.

Not sure of the outcome though. Thank you, nice reply. I would prefer framed, but then how can I check te condition of the print under the frame? If they take it out, like I asked them, maybe they will ship it out in a tube. So I'm troubled, should I just leave it as it is, framed, or ask them to take it out and risk damage in the shipping? The seller said "Frame is Acrylic and wood with gold paint." Unfortunately, the seller is not near, but I trust it. I will contact PC, but that probably will take a while. Thank you. BTW: This print is for christmas, and the next chrstmas, and the next, and the next, and so on. Lucky dont buy it without it being checked out of the frame if possible, if you request it they should be able to send it safely unframed without tubing it, your shipping costs will also be a lot cheaper unframed.
Interesting thread, Framed ! well at least it's not in a tube ! Ripple ! it's fixable , you'll need more pics and do you have a restorer who can do it , note I did not say framer. The term frame out is invalid ; this work should not be touching the glass , talking of which ; what kind of glass did the seller say .. ? Is the seller near ? , visit , check it out ...get a feeling for what your about do do. Mistakes on this playing field can lead to suicidal tendencies. I need advice on Banksy purchase, by Cornish Crayon on Oct 18, 2014 7:50:33 GMT 1, If you are trusting a seller you have never met, you can't wait to pull the trigger and you don't want to remove it from the frame as you can't afford to get it reframed, it sounds like you are talking yourself into taking the risk and trying to get back up from the forum first..........
Few questions from me,
Where was this advertised for only you too see it ? Do you feel like you will miss out if you don't buy this piece ?
Honestly and I will be honest, i drove 878 miles round trip for my first banksy and made sure I was happy, I would have walked away had it not felt right, in fact I've picked up all mine regardless of location and I have needed to feel happy with the surroundings the attitude the overall conviction of any sale. If it don't feel right don't buy it.
I have walked away from a deal only to come back six months later after it felt right, and the seller even went to the trouble of restoration at no extra cost to me, to try and get the ripples removed that were bugging me ever so slightly, turns out it was the ink during the printing stage. This was a straight trade in the end, and I am a happy bunny.
The fact your on here asking, you have doubts, don't panic buy, your time will come.
