Hong Kong's Umbrella protest/movement, by johnnyh on Oct 29, 2014 14:37:49 GMT 1, The Hong Kong protest started just over a month ago not long before I flew to England for a 3 week trip.
got back to China then did a bit of local travelling part of which was to Biejing and visited Tiananmen Square so this week was the first chance to pop over to Hong a kong and have a little look.
Must say quite shocked it is still going and that there has been no major crackdown. When it started I was quite scared for the leaders etc and that with a bit of a heaven had they would be dealt with..still a chance of that I suppose.
It is quite strange as you walk around it visited both sites the big one in Admiralty on Hong Kong Island and also the one in Mong Kok in Kowloon. Most of the pics are from Kowloon. quite strange when you walk around them as not really like a demo site at all more of a tented hippy type community....but in town. The Admiralty one is really big the Mong kok one smaller but not insignificant maybe 150 tents or so and is situated in the Middle of Nathan rd. People are mainly students and you see many of them studying they have put up some baracades but they are not hard to pass and you can walk in and around quite freely. There is a police prescience which is quite light but a sort of squad suddenly appears as the sun goes down not sure why as not long after it arrives it disapears. The odd local shop keeper etc shouts a bit of abuse and argues with them but that's about it.
personal view is that they have no chance of getting what they want but must say walking around there I was quite affected by it and them. Spent time reading their paper flyers etc there was even a Banksy rework with an umbrella. Just thought how great it would be if some artists did some mega boards for them. Shame no one is there really. Although I think they have no chance I have always been a big John Lennon fan and on of them had Lennon's head and the words..."You may say I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one" which must say kinda got to me a bit so may be they do have some sort of a chance. Just hope they all remain safe there's a lot at risk considering some from Tiananmen are still in prison
I have focused the pics on the art paper work and tents and am not showing any students faces etc but just to give an idea of what's happening. There was a original thread someone posted but could not find apologies
