Banksy Does New York Debut on HBO, by HangUp on Nov 16, 2014 16:52:32 GMT 1, For those who did not visit NYC October 2013, 'Better in than Out' might not ring a bell straight forward. This participatory project explored street art and graffiti's main weakness - its vulnerability to council workers, building owners, scavenger hunters and brought art back to the people. And you might think 'Yeah, it is not that special' but actually this residency was quite unique. Not only Banksy created an opportunity for a whole city to get engaged and become more aware of its cityscape, but he also managed to prove a point - that art is accessible and can shape off the urban landscape in a most unexpected and extraordinary way. A year later, director Chris Moukarbel comes up with a film, documenting the legacy of the project. It debuts tomorrow on HBO... See more details here.

Apart from the protagonist banksy hunter couple who are annoying as hell, the Doc is a terrific compilation of the work showed that week. Also, Being someone who followed the whole thing on social media, as I was not in NYC for most of that month, seeing the whole "residency" in one constant stream, was pretty dope.

Am I the only one who liked the Banksy Hunter guy and gal? Nah... I liked them for a few minutes... then the fact he kept calling him "Banksky," started to drive me nuts. At the premiere, I almost asked the film maker whether they chose a protagonist who obviously didn't really know who Banksy was prior to the "residency," for effect. Given the overtures in the art to the ridiculousness of what we choose focus on, care about, and pay attention to, I thought the protagonist being newer followers of Banksy, but then decided to leave it alone...

I really couldn't tell if they were saying "Banksky" without knowing or just being silly and hamming it up for their camera. Either way, I loved watching them have fun, wandering around New York without spending tons of money and experiencing the residency in person. Totally agree though, great Doc for people who weren't there.

Banksy Does New York Debut on HBO, by samfrost on Nov 16, 2014 19:32:03 GMT 1, The protagonists seemed a bit like a plant to me. Also some of the angles and camera shots seemed a little well placed and timed with the "dogwalkers". Clearly they were there for some of the events, but other shots seemed like they were re-shot for the film. Overall, good film for Banksy fans.

Banksy Does New York Debut on HBO, by Deleted on Nov 17, 2014 15:36:49 GMT 1, It's an interesting situation by all accounts and a tale of two cities if he decides one day to make a residency in London or other place in UK.
Banksy in the USA makes art on urban walls etc and gets chased by the police and has to be clever enough to avoid being caught. (by Banksynistas as much as by the police and be prosecuted too).
Banksy makes the same 30 day residency in London could do it without having to hide or risk being arrested as he is the darling of local councils in the UK.
One day an imposter will con some UK councils that they are Banksy, and make stencils on walls which the councils quickly protect.

Banksy Does New York Debut on HBO, by ironic mustache on Nov 17, 2014 17:30:39 GMT 1, That couple definitely wears on your nerves by the halfway point. I was fortunate to be on a business trip to NYC for two weeks during the residency (arrived 1 day after the Central Park Stunt) and I feel the doc definitely touches into the excitement of the residency. It would have been nice to elaborate more on a few things but obviously they were cramming a lot into a short timeframe.
How crazy is the current estimate they give on the Central Park pieces that were bought for $60. Lucky bastards.

People would think that Banksy invented street art at this rate.
What about the thousands of images and street art made by others allready in NY well before Banksy arrived?
Nothing but hype.

Banksy Does New York Debut on HBO, by Wearology on Nov 18, 2014 12:51:19 GMT 1, I watched the movie last night on HBO at 9 PM EST. I really enjoyed the documentary that lasted approximately 90 minutes, but found a few people in the show extremely annoying and also thought it could have been done better. It was quite interesting to see who the so-called American Banksy Aficionados are. Some people received way too much air time like the owner of the Kenzler Gallery, the art critic for the Daily News Newspaper & an off beat couple called "Banksy Hunters". HBO didn't use a lot of actual footage that they shot themselves, they actually showed other broadcasters coverage of Banksy's residency in NY. It appears that this was not planned in advance of the October event and that HBO decided to do this after the fact or mid way through the month. What I really liked was that it was able to capture peoples financial greed towards his art and that they went out of their way to point out that none of Kenzlers captured Banksy Street pieces were sold recently. Hats off to HBO for dedicating funds and time to our boy Banksy. This documentary will definitely create more exposure for Sir Banksy and his Merrymen. If I was involved in the project I would have covered the more obscure aspects of his residency such as where is the sign that was stolen day one, what our forum and other forum were discussing daily and interviewed some of the people from his inner circle that were a part of the preparation of the project. Overall I liked the show and was proud to be a Banksy fan as I watched it. I give it a 3 out of 5 rats.

At the premier, the HBO Docs people and the film maker were clear that the idea for this came after the residency was over. HBO had NO original footage of their own. It was entirely made up of user contributed content.
On a side note, they claimed to have been in contact with PC & Banksy while making the doc. They even noted that they were given some images to use directly from "team Banksy." Such as the image of the Housing Works painting before Banksy had done anything to it.

@elviswarhol, they actually address that in the film as well. There were many overtures to NYC being the birthplace of Urban street art. They spoke about 5 pointz and how it like many of the banksy have fallen prey to corporate greed. You should have a look at it, I think you would find it interesting. S

Banksy Does New York Debut on HBO, by sgolby on Nov 18, 2014 14:53:27 GMT 1, Urban art was around long before spray cans were invented. Granted... however can we agree that the term has been appropriated to define art and artists who do work both in streets and in galleries?
I realize this is the most simplistic definition, however this topic has been discussed ad nauseum in various threads, and I for one am not trying to have yet another history lesson on the semantic correctness of the term "Urban Art."

Banksy Does New York Debut on HBO, by Wearology on Nov 18, 2014 16:42:54 GMT 1, When I was in Israel back in the 90's I went on a historical tour and one of the tablets I saw had Graffiti on it that they say date back 1600 years ago. I cut & pasted the article below:
What graffiti on the Kotel can tell us about Egypt What messianic graffiiti on the Kotel can teach us about Egypt
delivered Sat., February 5, 2011 / 1 Adar I 5771, United Synagogue of Hoboken
Who in their right mind would think of writing graffiti on the Kotel, one of Judaism’s holiest sites, the last remnant of the Temple that stood in Jerusalem thousands of years ago?!
This is a question that is asked by many tourists to Israel when they visit the part of the Kotel referred to as “Robinson’s Arch.” This is a section of the Western Wall of the 2nd Temple plaza that was buried in rubble for thousands of years.
If you visit Robinson’s Arch, you can see a large Hebrew inscription carved into one of the Western Wall’s stones. It’s actually a quotation from the Haftarah we read this morning, the Haftarah designated for the confluence of Shabbat and Rosh Hodesh [the first day of a Hebrew month]. It’s from the Book of Isaiah, 66:14: Ur’item, ve-sas libchem; va-atzmoteichem ka-deshe. “You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice, and your bones shall spring up like grass.” The inscription actually cuts off in the middle of a word, as if the artist were interrupted in the middle of his work. It doesn’t look like professional stonecutting; it looks more like graffiti. Hebrew Biblical graffiti from thousands of years ago. (That alone is a great reason to visit Israel. Where else are you going to see Hebrew Biblical graffiti from thousands of years ago?)

Banksy Does New York Debut on HBO, by Deleted on Nov 18, 2014 17:26:04 GMT 1, It's an interesting situation by all accounts and a tale of two cities if he decides one day to make a residency in London or other place in UK. Been an ongoing residency here for a good few years now.
Kept a fair few businesses in the red.
Funny word 'Businesses', looks wrong, like 'Pillow'.
