José Parlá | 'Imagining New Worlds' & 'Segmented Realities', by Feral Things on Dec 2, 2014 21:09:48 GMT 1, José Parlá will be having his first museum show at the prestigious High Museum of Art in Atlanta. It's still a couple of months away but I thought it was worth mentioning now in case anyone wanted to make arrangements to see the exhibition. The exhibition is entitled 'Imagining New Worlds' and it will run from 14 February to 24 May 2015. Parlá's work will be a response to the life and work of surrealist Wifredo Lam, who will be having a retrospective at the High at the same time. Although aesthetically Lam and Parlá's work is very different, they both share a common Cuban heritage and their work is both concerned with place, geography and social history. It'll be interesting to see a new body of work after the massive World Trade Centre mural and I'm sure it'll be a fantastic show.

José Parlá | 'Imagining New Worlds' & 'Segmented Realities', by Feral Things on Dec 2, 2014 22:11:32 GMT 1, Erm, OK. Since posting the above, José Parlá has posted the following on Instagram which suggests he's also got a sculpture project opening at the High on 12 December entitled 'Segmented Realities'. There's nothing on their website and I haven't read any press, so I've no idea what the deal is unfortunately.

José Parlá | 'Imagining New Worlds' & 'Segmented Realities', by Feral Things on Dec 14, 2014 12:39:32 GMT 1, I'm surprised there's not more chat about José Parlá's first museum shows. 'Segmented Realities' opened on Friday and if anyone's interested here's some blub from the High's website and some photos from their Instagram:
"José Parlá: Segmented Realities presents a group of ten sculptural paintings by José Parlá that suggest cultural fragments salvaged from urban sites that have experienced social and cultural upheaval and transformation. As do segments of the Berlin wall, Parlá's sculptures bear witness to waves of history that seem to be inscribed on their surfaces, told in an expressive and poetic language of the street. These works act as palimpsests, surfaces bearing layers of marks, on which ensuing generations might imagine their own manifestos and declarations of selfhood."

I am not real fan of this exhibition. It shows how museums use street art and with artists help change it into artifacts. It's reminds me 'Synecdoche New York' where young playwright creates the spectacle where he tries simulate real life. Of course it is total failure. Maybe some forum member would go there and tag one of these.... it will be great pleasure to fund his/her spray paint can

José Parlá | 'Imagining New Worlds' & 'Segmented Realities', by Feral Things on Feb 16, 2015 22:06:02 GMT 1, There seems to be precious few photos out there from the exhibition (it doesn't seem to have been covered by any of the usual urban art blogs or Atlanta arts websites) but here's what I can find online from Henny Hardaway, Lynnette Jackson and Michelle B's Instagrams. If anyone comes across better/more photos of the work then I'd love to see them!
There is however going to be a catalogue of the show; 128 pages, 90 photos, hardback, released 3 March 2015 and priced at $29.95/£19.00/24.00€. It'll be available to order from all good, tax-paying bookshops and the ISBN is 978-8862083904:

Great stuff! Parla had tons of chatter here 2 years ago, but he hasn't released a print in years and has moved up dramatically over the same period as to gallery shows, high profile commissions and now museum shows - I'm guessing he's moved past what most here are aware of.
Referring to him as The King of Squiggles misses the mark.

José Parlá | 'Imagining New Worlds' & 'Segmented Realities', by Feral Things on Feb 24, 2015 18:37:06 GMT 1, I came across a couple of larger/better photos from the 'Imagining New Worlds' shows and there's more on J Crooms' photoblog:
Also, the museum are currently installing Parlá's 'Day and Night in London Town' installation from the Haunch show, which depicts the passing of time over a 24 hour period in the capital and which I seem to remember was the piece which they acquired a couple of years ago for the museum's permanent collection:
And another also...if anyone based in Japan missed his 2013 'Prose' exhibition at Yuka Tsuruno Gallery, then you can currently see an exhibition of his work at the gallery including the 45 foot long 'Haru Ichiban / First Wind of Spring / Through the Tokyo Alleyways' installation from Prose:
