Parasite 🇵🇱 New Painting • Art For Sale, by Parasite on Oct 26, 2014 18:21:42 GMT 1, I hope it works. How are the Roma seing this project? Ploppi, yeah, I have this hope too. You know, I have a contact with many gypsies and they are seing it in various ways. Most of them, like people from all nations, aren't interested in any kind of art projects but some of them like the idea and that they have a possibility to earn some money from art. One of people whom I'm working is homeless (she resides in something like house for homeless people) and firsly when she heard from a friend about my project she thought that she couldn't paint, she didn't believe in herself... after a week someone else from a pro-roma charitable organization suggested her to work in this project and now she is very happy.
So you know, projects like this sometimes or even always are tilting at windmills but on the other side there is some sense. I hope an I hope that it is worth so I'm doing it : )

Parasite 🇵🇱 New Painting • Art For Sale, by Hairbland on Oct 29, 2014 23:33:32 GMT 1, I was just scrolling through your Russian series (picked up an early one and was looking for framing ideas) and it really is a fully realized idea. What are your plans other than this new series? Gallery options? Obviously cracking the gallery code a b*tch but it would seem you have some ammo with a successful series on this board. Maybe a local indie publisher should compile them in a book?

Maybe a local indie publisher should compile them in a book? Maybe yeah, I don't know, if someone/some publisher will be interested then why not? or maybe I just don't have a money for producing books... and the time... nowdays I prefer to work with people, like now - with Gypsies when I'm something like an instructor or "stalker" of painting and we are exploring the gipsy culture in europe in visual aspects. There is something more interesting, a lot of unknowns. Not only in painting, you can see my projects on parasite.pl/ I like to think in the sense of "serie", narrations, etc, so in near time I think that there will be another serie of something. Now I have this Social Parasite Painting and here I will show everyday new pictures by Roma, and at the end - thanks for your words!

Time to network, have drinks with people you don't like, laugh at jokes that aren't funny and nod knowingly! But seriously most artists always want a larger audience and there seems to be a vibrant scene in your country. Yet of course from my experience most artists hate the social part of the deal. You need a friend that is a conniving won't take no type to do your dirty work.

Parasite 🇵🇱 New Painting • Art For Sale, by Hairbland on Oct 30, 2014 17:33:11 GMT 1, I tweeted your site and blog and am certain there must be a lot of artistic talent amongst the Roma. IMO your comments seem to be coming from an odd place...how do the Roma feel about this...there must be a lot of artistic talent amongst the Roma. Yet neither comment actually adds to the discussion.
You're an "artist", what's your honest thoughts?
Better yet, as your art seems to have a theme (or not - I just looked at your most recent Cubist Miley Cyrus Twerking piece - www.facebook.com/ArtistPloppi ) maybe you should take a page from Parasite's book - no wait he's actually already torn them out and painted on them...see what I did there...and start a thread to sell your art...

Roma have had lots of bad publicity and each generation gets tarred with the same brush by many.
My how do the Roma feel about this comment was about an outsider non Roma approaching them and saying lets make some art.
That also there must be undiscovered artistic talent as opposed to the ongoing churn out of St martines Frieze type stuff that we get promoted all the time by galleries.
If someone wants to buy my art they can, i'm very cheap

Many Kale and Anglo Roma people in the Uk now go to school, or receive home tuition through Education Otherwise. Roma still fight for education though, and it is often an uphill struggle, particularly for girls due to family expectations.
I have known Traveller children win scholarships to university, through Cardiff Traveller Education Service, although that’s going back a bit.
There are many, many people in the UK from Traveller family backgrounds, who work in every area of life, including art, yet who hide their identities – I cannot emphasise this enough.
Traditionally the culture from which I emerged has had little room for art due to practical reasons, and has been a culture of story telling. This is no longer the case, and there are many Traveller peoples interested in art.
Ploppi – you say ‘Roma have had lots of bad publicity and each generation gets tarred with the same brush’.
This is very true, but it is the same for the English. If you are English, are you therefore responsible for every mister meaner, anyone who is English has ever committed – going back centuries?
It is the same for young German people. Prejudice will always unfortunately exist, although that is not to condone it.
You also say ‘That also there must be undiscovered artistic talent’
This true of so many people everywhere.
In the near future I would like to study for a BA Hons in Art History.
I am now in danger of hijacking this thread, but allowed myself to become irritated by remarks on this thread.
I like you Ploppi, and read much of what you write - and agree with it, but please don't be so naive.
Hairband - I am attracted to your vibrancy and generosity of spirit, but I see the situation from a slightly different perspective.
Literacy, education, self esteem, and democracy are more important than any art world. Perhaps, there is a way that a publisher or gallery could help with providing a spring board for more social and cultural change though, and that's a great idea. The art though I believe is about process and intuition, rather than purely just money making finished project. It is education first.
Eastern Europe is a radically different situation from the UK, and I watch Parasites work with much interest.
Parasite is a pioneer, and doing an excellent job, I hope one day soon some of these Roma, say yes, I can do art, and start doing more of it, maybe one day teach even or go to college. I wonder what the rate of literacy is though. It is a brave and bold start.
Many Roma have issues with identity crisis in the west, self esteem etc, and art offers an opportunity to work through many problems, personal and social.
I like the Mona Roma – obviously someone has a sense of humour! Also the blue man on the blue couch reminds me of a Roma Walt Whitman, the glass reminiscent of The Absinthe Drinkers.
Kind regards to you all.
Thank you for this parasite.

When I want to deal with some social issues at the field of art I'm not thinking about money but at the end the money is coming back to me. It's maybe a trap but in this project I wanted to deal with it. We all must to deal somehow with financial cases but try to think about people like Roma (not all, those who really wants to change their living and the living of their kids) that are having not only problems with money. Those problems were somehow formed and kept by them (as the nation) but by the time they were also formed and kept by us. Now when a lot of Roma people want to live normally, like we, we see it, they want to end the school, work in normal jobs, go to shop and without any suspicious looks buy something in shops like we, they simple are having problems with it. In Czech in Brno where I was working (because yesterday the project had the end) is a something like a ghetto, one big district near a center of city which is common called - Bronx. In the 60/70's lots of Gypsies were forced to settle here. In East Europe most of people don't want to hire Gypsies... they are mainly working at the black market or simply try to do something illegal... they are mostly takking funds from social welfare and because of that Roma sometimes are also referred as "social parasites"...
As I see, most of people here are from UK so I must to say that I met with one opinion: when Gypsies are in UK and they are working somewhere they prefer to say that they are from e.g. Pakistan... and then they are better treated. Is it only their vision?
Those Roma whom I'm working with on painting are unemployed too, especially women, husbands don't understand what I'm doing but they know that I'm offering some money so their wifes can try... One woman is even a homeless. I'm working with three teens too: 13, 15, 16 years old. Some of them didn't finished the primary education. They don't have normal perspectives. This project was dealing somehow with it. Having a contact, giving a chance to say, maybe changing my/us/their views. That's why I'm interested in working with Roma at the field of art called painting where money is sometimes.
Now in a few days I will try to add rest of pictures and paintings that we painted. Last Friday we did the exhibition in Brno also. Tonight I will try to show you some photos!
Thanks for your support, opinions and any words!
PS sorry for my language and maybe a little chaos - I'm writing from a train.
Another sketch for now, remix of Van Gogh by Marcela:
BOUŘKA / Storm (Marcela) acryl on printed paper, 22 x 30 cm
- (...) important element of the project is that the gain from the sale of our works will be evenly split within this "guild" (...)

My how do the Roma feel about this comment was about an outsider non Roma approaching them and saying lets make some art. That also there must be undiscovered artistic talent as opposed to the ongoing churn out of St martines Frieze type stuff that we get promoted all the time by galleries. If someone wants to buy my art they can, i'm very cheap Many Kale and Anglo Roma people in the Uk now go to school, or receive home tuition through Education Otherwise. You also say ‘That also there must be undiscovered artistic talent’ This true of so many people everywhere.

Parasite 🇵🇱 New Painting • Art For Sale, by Deleted on Nov 6, 2014 9:06:52 GMT 1, Financially, projects have to prove themselves worthwhile, especially if funded, as this then opens an opportunity for possible further funding. Unfortunately in the world we now live, much is measured in financial terms. Whilst this is understandable and appropriate, I see the fact that this project has even taken place, as having a higher value, which is perhaps not so easy to measure. However, I do understand this, of course. The work is also worth buying, and there are a number of good pieces.
I fully appreciate that Traveller people can indeed be their own worst enemy. My parents are semi-literate, and there are still peoples, who do not want to send their children to school, maybe primary school, but not secondary education, especially girls. This is partly out of outmoded cultural expectations, and also fear of prejudice. Fortunately there are also many who have been embracing education for years and see it as a key. Why bang your head against a brick wall, when you can unlock the door and walk through. We have special educational service provision, and Education Otherwise in the UK.
Also on the subject of employment, it is difficult to find employment if you are a known Traveller – it is a matter of trust, and often on both sides – there usually isn't any. This can push people into criminality, if they cannot find a legitimate way to make a living, and I guess all the more so if there is no welfare. Even today, in the UK, those from Traveller Family backgrounds hide their identities. My own work colleagues have no idea, of my own background, and I will never tell them.
Travellers also constantly feud amongst themselves. There is much conflict now over many things in the UK – education, gender role, sexuality, drugs – mainly cannabis by some young people, new forms of employment, child protection, and housing is an issue for many still. Integration, and assimilation are different things, and there are many gaps to bridge.
For the record, I am no longer a traveller, Yet I will always be a Traveller. This is my last post here on Traveller peoples.
I have sent you my personal email address in a PM. If you are ever in the UK, you would be more than welcome to stay here.
Now it's time to hit the road!
All the best to you. Good luck.
Peter.

Parasite 🇵🇱 New Painting • Art For Sale, by Deleted on Nov 11, 2014 19:45:24 GMT 1, Your sense of fun is much appreciated as always Kobron, and this thread has definitely been in need of an injection of such good humour.
The expression 'to hit the road' generally implies going on a journey. This can mean going anywhere – to the shops – to work – or an 800 mile round trip.
I stated that I would no longer make posts on this forum with regard to Traveller Peoples and intend to stick by that.
The internet is not always the best format for communication, there is a lot to be said for intonation, and humour too, can sometimes get lost. Also, I think our own mood can make a difference to how we read and interpret information. The internet tends to depend upon, or use bite-size bits of information, sometimes no more than a few words. This is how information is now consumed. Therefore, it is perhaps not the best place for deep and meaningful conversations.
Parasites project, has had very far reaching effect, introducing the forum to a number of people, including a few more academics. The project has acted as a catalyst, raising a variety of questions and friendly debate, which is a big positive step forwards.
This forum was founded I believe, to focus on art that raised questions, made people stop in their tracks, and prompted them to question their assumptions. It is good to see that art and the manner with which it is employed, still having the power to do this.
We are all equally entitled to our own opinions and beliefs, and there are those who claim, that race and nationality are social constructs, and personally I am ultimately inclined to agree.
Personally, I find it an interesting question, as to why the constructs, and myths that our cultures impose on us, prove to be so important to our individual senses of identity, as human beings, on a shared planet. But alas, this is an art forum, not an anthropology one!

On my side with communication I'm not so good in english, of course I'm trying to understand better and use more adequate words and phrases but it's still hard to say everything what I want. After this I think that art or this what I'm doing is something like the language. From this visual language of signals and impulses I want to give some field for interpretetion so finally ideologically I'm not saying everything. And the second finally - I feel that I don't have a 100% sure of words that you used : ) but for now we have no more and no less. More is less or less is more? : ) and... nowdays art isn't only art, I think that even never was thus we can sometimes speak about an anthropology, an ethnography, a sociology, ... too, maybe it's even better!

Parasite 🇵🇱 New Painting • Art For Sale, by Parasite on Nov 15, 2014 20:57:41 GMT 1,
ŽAHRADA KEŘÚ / Bushes (painter: Terežka) acryl on old print on fiberboard, 50 x 28 cm
The project has been completed so it is the time to summarize and present results.
My work on the project started a few months before the official start of the action and those organisational issues was based on contact with local organizations, a gallery and people that were working with Roma community in Brno and by them I wanted to find participants for the project. After first days I knew that the contact by phone and e-mail from far away (I was in Poland, they were in Czech) was clearly insufficient. People supported by pro-roma organizations were unwilling to cooperate, even though the proposed remuneration for painting images. The lack of translator and a language barrier slowed down further attempts to find participants, time was running out and shrunk to one and a half week. After trying to seek takers on the streets of Roma Bronx, I decided to change the place of workshop, from a space in gallery (about 2 km away from Roma district) to Roma social community center. We managed to gather a group of 10 people, began the work and realize the project in half shorter time than I wanted.
When we started working together at the Bronx there started to appear more and more Roma wanted to work, including kids, mainly because of the possibility of earning money. There were some minor incidents, e.g. one of participants wanted to bring the whole family and when he met with a refusal then he was resentful and gave up, another person was coming and was doing nothing but he wanted a remuneration. We have to establish who was coming, who was working and painting.
Roma was quickly implemented to the process of painting. During the workshop they presented their vision of the Roma Gypsy culture by painting pictures on the basis of repainting and painting on existing pictures or reproductions of European culture. I just tried to give advices and suggestions only on the field of painting.
Pictures were painted with a humor and a distance to the topic, the most of them include features characteristic for a culture and tradition of Gypsy: vividness and richness costumes, vivid colors, women's and men's ornaments or traditional gowns. Each of used components are a visual interpretation of gypsiness for participants who are modern Roma and by this way they expose gypsy culture on European background in a suggestive and eidetic image.
The result of project was 21 paintings and 30 sketches that can be all viewed and purchased at the online shop - shop.parasite.pl
The summary of action was an exhibition of all pieces and documentary film showing the process which took place in the gallery The House of the Lords of Kunštát as a crowning of Global Communication Festival 2014.

Some time ago I painted this picture. It's a little weird piece for me, at first I thought that this piece looks good but it didn't have something more. I thought that this piece was too simple but with the passing of time when sometimes I suffled him and then looked once more and more it start intrigue me.
What do you think about this piece?
thanks for your opinions
