This one is quite somber, both with the dark brooding atmosphere and the pained and joyless expressions of the subjects. To me it is essentially summed up by the phrase "worked to death". The women toil in indentured servitude, giving their life to the Dickensian taskmasters in a barren, basement-like setting. The woman on the left contemplates the black thing in the ground as a foreboding foreshadow to their eventual demise or to give into it as an alternative to the slave-like conditions.
