One theory put forward is that at some point in their lives whilst huddled together they are given a scare and bolt off in different directions to escape only for their tails to become forever knotted as they do so.
Imagine lifting a log in your back yard and finding this monstrosity glaring back at you and asking nicely to put the log down!
