Not happy with framing...need advice, by 4frnt on Dec 30, 2014 2:03:03 GMT 1, I just got back from the framers (a well reviewed framer in NYC) and I am not satisfied with the results...just looks sloppy to me. I usually let the framer suggest a style and I will agree with or modify the suggestion. I have never had a problem with the 6 prints that I have had framed (these were at a different framer where I used to live). For this print I agreed with the framer's suggestion of float, shadowbox and black frame.
Prior to bringing the print to the framer, I had it in a tube for a few months while I was busy moving and relocating my life. Could this have caused some of the issues? I though that framers could flatten prints better than this turned out.
Any advice on how to handle this with the framer would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Not happy with framing...need advice, by Aza on Dec 30, 2014 2:08:12 GMT 1, Photos aren't loading up for me. When I gave a print to MFM I was desperate to get it back ASAP, but he wanted to flatten it for several weeks before framing. A decent framer should know this sort of stuff in my opinion.

Not happy with framing...need advice, by WILLYBKLN on Dec 30, 2014 2:48:04 GMT 1, The framer should've notified you that the print needs to be flattened for an extended period of time before framing, this would have definitely solved this issue. I would take it in and request them to flatten it properly and re-frame. Hopefully it works out for you.

Not happy with framing...need advice, by Deleted on Dec 30, 2014 6:10:28 GMT 1, Hi There,
It looks like the print had been hinged to close to the corners which is why that part is flat and the rest is wavy. The print doesn’t have anywhere to move…it should be able to expand and contract with humidity etc. Sometimes you can’t flatten a piece of paper easily if it’s been bent, warped or rolled it wants to go back to the way it was no matter how many weights you put it under. It can be professionally flattened but your average framer can to do that. I’ve had prints that were perfectly flat during framing but on the wall they go a bit wavy. Its the natural way paper reacts to humidity etc. I’ve had prints that sit flat on one wall then move them to another and they go wavy just due to the temperature of the wall on the back of the framing.
In this case I don’t think is a flattening issue it looks like its hinged to close to the edges. and maybe in a few points around the print which makes it bubble a little. Take it back and just say your not happy with how flat its sitting and see what they can do. It may be as easy as rehinging the print. Im sure they will be happy to redo it….especially as it does look a little bad as it is.
To all those people that say take it somewhere else... your framers F%&ked, he’s Stuffed it, and all the other things i hear on this forum sometimes can you not jump to conclusions and give the framer a chance to fix the problem.
Relax a bit huh……
Cheers kerry

Not happy with framing...need advice, by SW20 on Dec 30, 2014 9:44:57 GMT 1, Take it back and have a polite word about what your not happy with and ask him to rectify it. Think you'll find he will probably sort it for you etc.
If you take it somewhere else you will pay twice then have to go legal to get you money back and you won't get that if you did not offer the chance to rectify.
So just go see him you obviously trusted him enough when you left it there so pop in and have a chat sure it will work out well

Not happy with framing...need advice, by Deleted on Dec 30, 2014 14:55:58 GMT 1, Framers are like tattoo shops.
Lot's have sprung up to make easy money and soe are good and some are bad.
No framer worth their reputation would allow a print to be framed less than perfectly.
Take it back and tell the framer that their Customer service and re doing of this print will give them a glowing word on this forum which gets lots of visitors and maybe they will also give you discunt on your next framing job.

Not happy with framing...need advice, by Deleted on Dec 31, 2014 2:06:47 GMT 1, Good info there kez, although in my opinion a framer should know better don't you think? You would think so mate but there’s a big difference between a framer and an experienced framer. Some are in it just for the buck and don’t care what products they use….. some just have staff that are inexperienced.
Im fixing a Toxic Mary at the moment that the framer used at least 30 bits of double sided tape to float the image onto the backing. Now in his defence he used all acid free materials including the type of DS tape…. But the way he floated the print was terrible. I phoned him to see why he framed it this way and he just said….. its acid free so its all good. He thought he was doing the right thing and that’s what I mean by inexperienced. It gave the same effect as the print above….. held in a few spots but the rest of the print bubbled. I now have to send it to a conservator to have the tape removed so I can reframe it.
Im sure this print will be able to be fixed….. just take it back and be polite to the framer.
cheers
Always get or go to a recomended framer..... its the only way to be safe. Also Look at the things on the wall....how are they framed. if they are horrible then walk away. how clean is the workshop..... if they dont take care in how the shop or workspace looks then they might not look after your works so well. Well thats my opinion anyway.

Not happy with framing...need advice, by Oski on Dec 31, 2014 2:35:08 GMT 1, There is no way a decent framer will allow this debacle out of their shop. Definitely go back and request they fix this...that is if you trust them not to screw it up further or damage your print in the process. Threaten a negative Yelp review if you have to.
Otherwise I just dropped off my first piece with Rooq down in NoHo, who comes highly recommended on these forums. Rooq spent a good 30-45 minutes with me to discuss the framing and art in general. A super great guy. In fact, he advised that I don't frame one of my wood pieces. This is a guy with integrity to turn away work and give honest advice. Maybe you can get him to fix this, should cost about $60 or so.

Not happy with framing...need advice, by 4frnt on Dec 31, 2014 15:52:39 GMT 1, Needless to say he was embarrassed and quickly offered to fix it. Even if it's perfect when he is done, I will likely find a new framer (he was in the recommended NYC framer thread). I'm close to NoHo so maybe I will try out Rooq for my next print.
I'll post pictures on the final product.
