Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by silvermyn on Oct 31, 2012 21:03:28 GMT 1, An extract from an email I got from one of Bonhams 'Specialists' in the Contemporary Art Department when I decided not to send a piece over to LA:
"I can understand your decision that you may then do not want to consign, it is absolutely your choice, I would like just to point out that this Urban Art Sale in LA will be an incredible event and we expect extremely strong results."
It was incredible alright not sure about the results though...

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by oneeye on Oct 31, 2012 22:08:19 GMT 1, Worst auction I've ever attended. They didn't even bother to wipe down the filthy frames. Poor execution all the way around. And it showed.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Elephants and Castles on Oct 31, 2012 22:17:47 GMT 1, I was in the room and at the preview, a bit dissapointing to be honest....Too many Banksy prints and many of them in bad condition in the frames, The Shepard canvas that the owner had let his son add beer bottles too and mirrored mosiac pieces....The Kaws print was hanging off it's sticky corners in the frame....strange timing too should have been a morning auction to cater for the international buyers. It could have been publicized way more too, I only stumbled across it by chance I think Bonhams should look at doing some PR in future before a big event like this.

Yea the frames were filthy and a lot of the works in general just looked beat.
Why would they even allow that shep piece in? That hard up?
Is the khaki cyw really two-toned or was it rippled? Never had seen a khaki irl, but it didn't look great by any means.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by johnnyh on Nov 1, 2012 10:18:00 GMT 1, Interesting little article although can see their point it's really up to the owner of the piece and the buyer as it were. To a certain extent when they sold the piece in the first place they threw away their rights as it were. Similarly not many artists putting their work out cheaply. NW prices went up based on these auction figures and the secondary market as did Banksy's etc.
Interesting comments from Pest Control considering they authenticate these pieces with a really quick turn around for the auction houses and take their calls on any queries. So they support the auction houses better than they support standard owners. I know this for a fact as I saw some of their emails to Bonhams a while back.
I do sympathies though with the sub standard pieces comment that they have no control over or street pieces or the Shep type piece that has been altered but still promoted as his piece

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by anbesivam1 on Nov 1, 2012 11:17:51 GMT 1,
Interesting to hear Revok's experience. However, I think the article is not very balanced and poorly written (this maybe due to a word limit on the publication).
All artists today are able claim "Droit de suite" (resale rights) for sales over 1000euros in auction sales within Europe through royalty agencies such as DACS. Until May of this year they could also claim it in the United States. However, this year it was ruled unconstitutional and against the 1st sale commerce doctrine...this has however been re-opened for consultation & due to report this month.
Artists can also get the buyer (via a gallery) to enter into a contractual no resale period. Some galleries do this routinely.
As urban art galleries are relatively-speaking "young", they haven't really offered these services to their artists.
Anyway, my point is that artists do have some instruments at their disposal to ensure their work is protected and that they do receive a royalty on resale. However, it is easier said than done. No question.
Auction houses wouldn't be able to function if every artist called asking to pull a sale. I feel the seller of the piece needs to put his/her side of the story across. Surely Revok and the seller could have come to an amicable settlement. Especially if he was offering to replace the piece with a higher quality one of equivalent or greater value, in order to protect his perceived technical skills to the market.
We may yet find out the full story.

So if you ring them up they will look up the last owner and send you an email authenticating the piece for you. That's what they do for Bonhams plus supply a COA within two days You may get that but not sure that is a standard owner or buyer service. I did not however criticize their service just commenting that they do offer things to the big auction houses that is above normal just as they may do to certain galleries nothing wrong with that its understandable. The point I was making in the article they make out they dislike the auctions but they do actively go out of heir way to support the process. Like wise in the UK Banksy gets Artist rights something he does not get in the US for example
Should also commen that I haver never had any service problems or issues with PC so I am not negging them. Although I assume it may have been you who negged me ;D peace and love

I thought that most of the prices for the pieces were in line with what I tought was reasonable. The Banksy pieces were small and if I recall some multiple editions so I'm Nottoo surprised they didn't sell. Also there we're a lot of what I might call fringe urban artists here. I try to think how many "urban" artists will be relevant as part of the urban art movement 20 years from now. I can't think it would be more than 5 or 6.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by johnnyh on Nov 5, 2012 11:53:34 GMT 1, Charlie that's the point of an auction and a good auction house finding people who want the pieces. This auction had few of those hence bad for sellers with the odd exception. However the plus of this was it was a pretty good auction for buyers as not many people competing for the pieces so there were some good buys and a lot of no sales and of course a few good sales such as the one you mention. That seller did well

Maybe (don't know about recent years prices myself...) but auction price looks "in line" to me as was offered by a Gallery for $51K a few month back...
