Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by Viking Surfer on Dec 19, 2018 1:56:21 GMT 1, All results include premium of 25%. Very low auctions results across the board there. I had bids on the signed BH and Spade, just didnβt go low enough unfortunately! good on you for trying.. would have to think bonhams in late december could be a good place to get a cheap one.. Yeah, auctions often achieve record results, but you can also get some cracking bargains if you stick to your guns with a proxy bid.
The signed pulp that went for 23 inc premium in the summer was one of the bargains of the year. I think Palestine Spade wasnβt too bad either considering it was unique and outside of the edition.

It wont be surprising to see a slow down in Banksy prices in the year ahead given the economic climate of uncertainty. Some may still do well here and there but I wont expect prices on quality works to go down too much either

You don't seem to much understand the difference between a fact and an opinion. Insult wise (since that's as far as you seem capable of contributing) have you got anything better? because even these are pretty weak tbh...

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by kuni on Feb 18, 2019 22:46:42 GMT 1, If I remember correctly there was a poster on here waffling on whether or not to buy one of these for ~50k? Canβt remember if he ended up buying the piece though. Basically the thread turned into a sh*tshow but would be interesting to know what he ended up doing.

Must be - itβs got hand sprayed stencils and is most definitely connected to the piece found inside - in some ways I think the box is more valuable!

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by eschiff on Feb 19, 2019 10:19:48 GMT 1, I believe the guy ended up buying the grappling hook (as did I). As an owner, I'm curious to see where this lands, was also wondering whether the first to come up to auction would be sold with or without the box. I had thoughts of cutting up the box and framing the panels, wonder what that would do to the value of the hook - is the box now a part of the art?
I was on the fence at the time, it was a lot of money for me and quite a stretch - back then I figured if worse came to worst then I thought I'd at least be able to sell it for cost - looks like it may be quite a few multiples of that.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by JW on Feb 19, 2019 10:49:11 GMT 1, For sure, the box is part of the overall art piece. Thatβs why it has the stencils done in the way they are, Jesus on the cross, fragile ideology, turn water into wine, Star of David and all that! Itβs actually quite a piece, you are lucky to have had the opportunity to buy it! I think you'll find the original question was tongue in cheek - referencing the recent Pejac "Love Letter" box debate.
This absolutely forms part of the overall art piece.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by silvermyn on Feb 19, 2019 11:58:47 GMT 1, i have a feeling this will go for a big number If this doesn't reach multiples of the low estimate, I'm sure that people on here will not hesitate to start slating Bonhams. However, a large grappling hook with rope isn't a very practical piece to display in a collection and (let's face it) a cardboard box is still a cardboard box when it comes to finding a space for it.
To top it all it's an image of the emaciated Jesus on a cross which isn't what most of today's generation of collectors want. This is one of the reasons Christ With Shopping Bags doesn't hit levels it should do IMHO.
Should two people really want it then the sky is the limit. Will it be Bonham's fault if it doesn't reach outlandish expectations...? For the money, I'm sure that most people would be holding out for an editioned canvas.

I don't know much about the auction world and when is a good time to list or with which auction house. You very well could be right.
A few people brought up your point on the thread where the guy was deciding to buy it or not. I'd say that finding space for a grappling hook is much easier than a massive canvas (not to mention it comes with the installation hook to make it easy to put on a wall).
I'd also add that while you're right, it is an emaciated jesus, that's surely just a superficial reading of the piece. It's easy to dismiss a piece of art that way (GWB is just a girl...with a balloon, any of the placard rats are just rats...holding a placard), not much depth to looking at it that way. And I would think that anyone that sees this piece as just an emaciated Jesus may not be the target market for most Banksy pieces.
