Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by silvermyn on Feb 19, 2019 12:11:46 GMT 1, If this doesn't reach multiples of the low estimate, I'm sure that people on here will not hesitate to start slating Bonhams. However, a large grappling hook with rope isn't a very practical piece to display in a collection and (let's face it) a cardboard box is still a cardboard box when it comes to finding a space for it. To top it all it's an image of the emaciated Jesus on a cross which isn't what most of today's generation of collectors want. This is one of the reasons Christ With Shopping Bags doesn't hit levels it should do IMHO. Should two people really want it then the sky is the limit. Will it be Bonham's fault if it doesn't reach outlandish expectations...? For the money, I'm sure that most people would be holding out for an editioned canvas. I don't know much about the auction world and when is a good time to list or with which auction house. You very well could be right. A few people brought up your point on the thread where the guy was deciding to buy it or not. I'd say that finding space for a grappling hook is much easier than a massive canvas (not to mention it comes with the installation hook to make it easy to put on a wall). I'd also add that while you're right, it is an emaciated jesus, that's surely just a superficial reading of the piece. It's easy to dismiss a piece of art that way (Girl With Balloon is just a girl...with a balloon, any of the placard rats are just rats...holding a placard), not much depth to looking at it that way. And I would think that anyone that sees this piece as just an emaciated Jesus may not be the target market for most Banksy pieces. Appreciate all that but I'm only considering the potential for strong auction result.
No amount of depth can explain Sotherby's result for the GWB canvas last year (pre-shedding of course). Post shredding and you've got some depth issues to consider

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by nex on Feb 19, 2019 12:54:34 GMT 1, I believe the guy ended up buying the grappling hook (as did I). As an owner, I'm curious to see where this lands, was also wondering whether the first to come up to auction would be sold with or without the box. I had thoughts of cutting up the box and framing the panels, wonder what that would do to the value of the hook - is the box now a part of the art? I was on the fence at the time, it was a lot of money for me and quite a stretch - back then I figured if worse came to worst then I thought I'd at least be able to sell it for cost - looks like it may be quite a few multiples of that.
If you ever decide to frame the sides post pics - that’s how I think it should be kept too - do understand though that could harm the purity of the piece

Bonhams is not the place to put this kind if stuff and if You look through the actual auction and compare it to Phillips thats on the day after its incomparable.
Then add in the mailings out and customer base.
As we all pretty much know Bonhams is the cheapest place to buy Banksy prints.
Why someone would put this in Bonhams is playing with my mind a little. I just dont get it 😁
I get your point on a canvas and agree. This is a lot more Niche. All the more reason to place it in the right auction with the right auction company

To be fair to them they do hold the record for a Banksy editioned canvas, unless I've overlooked a sale or two elsewhere. Nearly £350k with buyer's premium for an edition of 25.

Agreed that prints don't do as well as they seem to do elsewhere but give them some credit...

If you owned this and wanted to get the best return on it. Would you have put it in this auction house or one of the others? If one of the others which one?

I think that buyers with big wallets know when Banksy originals come up and don't really care which auction house is selling them. Stick it on your website and "they shall come". The editioned GWB canvas demonstrates this point well.

Yeah, interesting as of course no one knew the box would come with the stencils. At least I didn’t anyway.

I personally do not think it matters which auction house this goes with, any serious collectors will unlikely care at all, they will be hunting out the piece. There are so few original Banksy pieces that come up now that the audience surely will go to whoever is selling... Especially post-shredding intervention at Sotheby's. The market seems red hot.
I could be wrong but I think Bonham's Balloon Girl edition of /25 for 340kGBP in the exact same auction last year is the highest on record for a Banksy edition of that quantity? Any other better similar edition examples elsewhere?
Isn't the guy in charge of post-war / contemporary at Bonham's pretty experienced with street / contemporary art in the London art scene? I seem to remember he was x Lazarides.
My guess is hordes of bidders will flock to this sale and it's going to go crazy high being first to a sell as i'm sure many other owners will hold onto these for quite sometime hoping they go even higher (likely).

It was a freak result which surprised pretty much everyone watching, but the fact that it was owned by the late Robin Williams did it no harm. It's unlikely to be seen as the new benchmark for CWSB. We'll have to keep an eye on the next auction estimate to find out I guess.
With a low edition number and it being an early print, perhaps $100k should be the benchmark for a CWSB in good condition. However, I feel that the subject matter will hold it back. Your suggestion that the higher and more recent edition NOLA is a similar price to CWSB kind of proves the point.

Will it be Bonham's fault if it doesn't reach outlandish expectations...? For the money, I'm sure that most people would be holding out for an editioned canvas. I thought $100,000 seemed pretty high for Christ With Shopping Bags?? That's almost NOLA prices? Is that not considered high now? www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2018/creating-a-stage-collection-of-marsha-and-robin-williams-n09977/lot.9.htmlI personally do not think it matters which auction house this goes with, any serious collectors will unlikely care at all, they will be hunting out the piece.
If you refer to Ralph Taylor then yes, he’s ex LAZ.
If this doesn't reach multiples of the low estimate, I'm sure that people on here will not hesitate to start slating Bonhams. However, a large grappling hook with rope isn't a very practical piece to display in a collection and (let's face it) a cardboard box is still a cardboard box when it comes to finding a space for it. Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by Deleted on Feb 19, 2019 20:27:22 GMT 1, That one came in at five times the high end estimate!
An estimate of $20k was somewhat low for this so saying that it went for 5 times over doesnt really help value the print. It’s difficult to value, they dont come up for auction / sale that often but I recall that when Laz had a clear out at auction a few years back, early 2015, this went for about £23k.

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by Deleted on Feb 19, 2019 21:30:33 GMT 1, I cant recall precisely when it was, early 2015 methinks, but he shipped loads of stuff from under his bed and CWSB was one of them. The auction caused the now routine hike in prices at all the usual suspect galleries; every Banksy changed to POA at Hang Up for a day and when prices were shown again they were somewhat inflated.

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by sl1973 on Feb 20, 2019 17:14:36 GMT 1, I also was lucky to get the chance to buy a Grappling Hook and recently got it appraised by Phillips and Sothebys. Neither seemed to have much insight on the piece. Phillips gave a 6 to 8k gbp estimate (LOL) and Sotheby's 30k-50k gbp.
Sotheby's offered placing in the prints and editions sale auction in September, which possibly would not have such a deep pocketed audience.
It does not surprise me that this is at Bonhams as the others so far for me have not been offering good sales, estimates or sellers fees.
What would be the best strategy to sell now that one is already on the second market? hold onto for a long time or sell while the market is very strong for Banksy?

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by sl1973 on Feb 20, 2019 18:25:43 GMT 1, Really insightful, thank you so much for a nice and helpful reply (free from the traditional UAA sarcasm!).
Will be interesting to see what happens with this sale, as you say for a Banksy and auction houses this piece is unprecedented and in uncharted territory.
My guess is on this occasion it will go very high as the post war / contemporary art team at Bonhams have done a very good job on the presentation and marketing.
Who knows how Phillips got to a 6-8k estimate since I also told them what the retail cost was!? Haha
Just saying though, when folk on here are wondering why someone is selling in a Bonhams sale rather than say a Phillips sale - that given does have some very cool art - there perhaps is your reason. Some mildly clueless specialists.

Yeah, fair enough, thanks for letting us know, explains a lot. 6-8k, quite embarrassing, was this over the phone, or did they see it? Who was it at Phillips?

Every COA says that. Even if it’s an edition of 600!

I think this is a nice curiosity. An aberration from his usual oeuvre. Having said that, Dismaland featured many ‘sculptures’, and his Guantanamo/Disneyland stunt, well, it depends whether bonuses have been paid. It could go either way. I wouldn’t thank you for it.

Bonhams • Art Auctions • London 🇬🇧, by Unica on Feb 21, 2019 10:03:18 GMT 1, IMO this won't break £100k, it's not very wall friendly, similar to Christ with shopping bags that's always sold at a discount given its edition size, plus its awkward to display and in my experience collectors want prints or canvases and it's an edition piece of 25. I think most would opt for a GWB or rare NOLA as I would. That being said if two wealthy people are interested anything could happen.
