What will this latest auction have bearings on prices? surely we can't expect another upsurge in prices? I always loved NW's work & he's worked NY well this last few days. Hard work always pays off and his hard work certainly is returning a hefty dividend !!
Good on u my son :-)

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by artstylee on May 13, 2008 20:22:34 GMT 1, Go Nick Walker, 37,000 for the Apish Angel Sergeant piece
I believe that same Seargeant Monkey Astronaut was available at the Carmichael Gallery show. the put it out as a little bonus, But one of the UK rich ballers that flew wearing Vandal bowler caps that in were the first in line bought it up for 1,000-1200 USDollars, I forgot exact amount. Only one hidden in the back by the bar.
Was a 1/1 AP Print but looked exactly the same. Lucky son of a.

AGREED I think he'd even tell you that that piece was a bit of a filler piece for the Hollywood show. If I recall it was also one of the least looked at. But considering milk costs nearly 7 dollars a gallon in manhattan probably a good price for that piece in the Big city.

I presume you are referring to the Sothebys evening sale? I was referring to the Christie's evening sale which I believe to be superior artistically to the Sothebys sale though I eagerly await both (and their corresponding morning and afternoon sales too). All of them are far superior (for my tastes) to the warm up Bonham's auction.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by lee3 on May 13, 2008 21:23:02 GMT 1, ...It will be interesting to see if that Clyfford Still smashes right through $20 million like his last one. I can't wait for this evening! The Still piece will be one to watch. I know an abstract collector that owns quite a few Motherwells that is after the Still today, with a cap of $15 million. He said he thinks odds are against him... I agree. I am looking for this one to do over 30 Million.
I'm not sure how I missed your reply. $30 million? I'd be stunned but you never know. I don't believe your friend will get it at $15 million as that seems shy to me given recent sale and lack of supply but you never know. I've been thinking that $19-21 million would get it done. To actually be able to bid on any of these would be so much fun.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by aginghippie on May 13, 2008 22:31:37 GMT 1, That was an interesting auction. The Laugh Now was painful, it went from $140k to the final $210k between a bidder in the room and a telephone bidder very slowly, at times it was only moving in $5k increments. The auctioneer did a good job there.
I was surprised by the response to the Nick Walker pieces as I didn't think they were particularly strong. Like the two Banksy prints the Moona price was was middling. The canvases though got a good response with multiple bidders all in the room and fast bidding.
The TMA London might have gone higher but the buyer made it clear he was going to have it and since he had already bought a considerably more expensive piece nobody wanted to argue.

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by gerry on May 13, 2008 23:55:45 GMT 1, Don't forget the UK's heading into stagflation by the looks of things at the moment, which is not a good place for the economy to be in either.
What this has to do with art prices i'm not quite sure yet, but i can't immediately see it being a good thing...

Bonhams β’ Art Auctions β’ London π¬π§, by aginghippie on May 14, 2008 0:07:30 GMT 1, Thanks for the eyes aginghippie. Was the room packed?
All the seating was all occupied and people were one or two deep around all the walls. Some people left when it reached the Urban section but when only a couple more left after the Banksy work was sold I knew the NW work would do well.
The Banksy prints went for about what I expected as did the NW Moona print. The LN original struggled from $130k with just two bidders who were taking a long time on each bid, but it got there in the end - all credit to the auctioneer who took a lot of $5k bids to keep it going.
The Sergeant was a romping three way fight, the Nikers went for a lot more than I expected, and the underbidder on the Sergeant got the study. There were a lot of people bidding for the NW work and it was brisk, I could see six in the room and there were others on the phone - the phones dropped out pretty fast.
Generally canvases seemed to do a lot better than prints. That was true for both the Banksy and NW work. I wondered at the wisdom of the number of Nick walker pieces but it came out ok in the end. It would have been nice to see more Faile and some other artists as well but I guess this was their first auction and they didn't want to take to many risks.

Does you budy own the Still ($14 million)? A 22 inch version of my avatar brought in $3.5 million! Rothko at 50, Warhol @ 34, Prince at 7.4, Bacon @ 28, and Freud @33. Love the Gotlieb that way over estimate at 6.5 which is where the Wesselmann smoker hammered. Over 300 million in sales and still going...
