In his defense: He is drawing with only one hand. The second hand is to hold the paper. He answered that on his instagram account.
But his customer service is awful especially when I demanding that amount of money.

He got this question because he was drawing with both hands. But you are right he needs a defense to sell his *@#$... stuff ๐

Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by sufsean on Jun 17, 2020 21:03:21 GMT 1, can someone explain why people are hating on him so much?
making a print of a sculpture? (par for course)
some had bad experience with customer service? (again par for course).
...those seem like pretty soft reasons to dunk all over him.
The prints look pretty dope imo (and it's something you can hang on your wall)...just curious why everyone is hating on this.

Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by drip on Jun 17, 2020 22:48:10 GMT 1, I guess there is no need to post up an Arsham release anymore Oh gosh, it's always worth posting. Anyone sharing information (about art releases, not me) is doing a service. And if we all liked the same thing, print drops would be infuriating. For every person saying, pah, I hate that, about an artwork, I'm sure there are 2 planning a purchase and thinking about where it will go in the hallway.
And being an artist requires a thick skin. It would be nice if it didn't, but by the very nature of the beast, you're putting your work out there to be judged. It's something that you've made, something that started as an idea or concept inside of you (unless you're ripping someone else off); so when you put your work out there, it's like putting a part of yourself out there. You're being vulnerable, saying, here's something I thought was nice. I like it. I hope you like it too. And that you will give me money for it. A lot of money.
And just because someone online (hello! *waves*) might not like an artist that you like, that shouldn't make you feel attacked, insecure or insulted either. We all like (and hate) different things.

Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by drip on Jun 17, 2020 23:09:21 GMT 1, Well, nobody else went, so I guess I'll have to. All aboard, next stop - mental town.
First off, I wouldn't say I *hate* him. I don't even know the guy. I'm sure he's a lovely person that does lovely things and has wants and needs and has dogs that he loves very much. Rescue dogs. Also, whether you like his art or not, all art is valid. It might not necessarily be successful, with regards to a person's opinion, but the art will always be valid and he meets all the usual requirements that would qualify him as a successful artist.
I do believe that it matters how you use (or market) your art. For example, I don't think an artist should ever use their art for evil or malice. Not that I'm saying Daniel is evil, far from it, I don't know him. But I think we're very imperfect beings, and I believe intent is very important.
Having said all that, I kinda feel like I hate a great deal of his art. I've talked previously about how I believe instagram (and other social media) has fuelled the rise of the "pretty, mediocre artist", and while Daniel is clearly a fully qualified artist, he does have some of the traits of a PMA. It's about the brands. It's about trainers. It's about watches. It's about the expensive cars. It's about celebrity. It's about looking good. It's about looking wealthy. It's about being in high-end locations, showing off brands. It's style over substance. His art doesn't speak for itself. It can't. If it did, you would barely hear it. It has to be surrounded by or draped in the trappings of a luxury, consumeristic and aspirational lifestyle, that is frankly unhealthy for both us as human beings, and also the planet.
The other thing I can't stand about his work, is the use of nostalgia for his relics. It's a cheap trick, and I despise it. I feel (there's that word again. Feel. Almost like this is an emotional response on my part and makes no actual thought-out sense. Anyway..) like we're already awash with advertisers using nostalgia to appeal to consumers. How many bought a relic because it appealed to their childhood, or a love of the 80s, or walkmans, or retro design, or basketball? Or brands? Or popular-culture items. Things that were already iconic, already popular, popularity that his art could piggyback off of, take advantage of. His art was almost entirely based around items that already had a long-established fanbase.
Speaking of taking advantage, some of the worst things in history have been made possible because of nostalgia, looking backwards, a wistful longing for how things used to be. It's literally backwards thinking, and it directly appeals to the insecure, fearful, and aging person inside us that would like to be young again. Both advertisers and politicians take advantage of nostalgia, and I hate it.
Another thing I don't like is his use of crystals in his work. Hear me out, I'm not crazy. And it's not because of the old "anyone that uses crystals to make money is a fraud" thing. Crystals have a lot of useful scientific, technological and holistic applications. But no, my reason is thus:
When I was about six, my family went on a daytrip to a cave. It was the Thatcher years, things were hard, there wasn't a lot of money around, and my dad would take us on this kind of day out or holiday from time to time. Dad would take my siblings and I to the coast, the Welsh mountains, or sometimes a cave. In an attempt to lose one or two of us.
Anyway, this time the cave was legit. There was a tour guide and everything. My family and I were part of a large group. We'd snake through this cave, following the guide, and the lights would be turned on and off as the group moved, with the cave plunged into total darkness behind us as we went. I suspect to encourage the group to keep moving, but, like I said, it was also the Thatcher years, so the cave owners were also probably trying to save money so their family could eat.
Well, we were walking through this cave system, and it was full of quartz crystals. On the walls, ceiling, floors, everywhere. It was beautiful....when you could see it. The problem was, our group was possibly a bit too large for the light system. So, as the group moved forwards, we, at the back, had about 10 seconds of light before they turned them off around us. Eventually, as part of the group fell behind, we were almost permanently in the dark. So we were constantly pushing forwards, fearing being left behind in the cave. I desperately clung on to my mother's hand and just kept walking, my eyes closed so I couldn't see the darkness. I was having a lovely time, thanks dad, you massive sh*t.
Anyway, at one point, I heard my father say, "Here! Put this in your mum's bag!" And suddenly a heavy rock was thrust into my tiny hand. I felt the unmistakable shape of crystals, and then fumbled across in the dark and placed the rock inside my mum's bag. Pre-dating Arsham collectors by a good few decades, I suddenly found myself excited by the thought of crystals, and I wanted more.
Knowing I was shielded by darkness, I slipped out of my mother's hand and began fumbling around on the floor of the cave, picking up rocks wherever I could find them and then depositing them into my mother's bag. It was a big bag. Bags were big in the 80s. Anyway, mum kept her mouth shut, so I could tell that she was with me on this plan. All the while, we were moving forwards through the dark of the cave.
Eventually, I thought, well my mum can't carry much more than this, surely. I brushed my hands clean on my shorts, and then went back to holding my mum's hand. I don't know how much rock I'd harvested, but let's just say that by the end of the tour, I'd made that cave considerably larger.
After about about 5 more minutes of us stumbling around in the dark, the tour was ended and we were spat out into the light of the outside world. As my eyes winced to the light, I took a few moments to focus, then I looked up at my mum...and it was not my mum.
I had been holding another lady's hand.
For about 10 minutes in the darkness.
Just who the hell did she think was holding her hand in there??
She also had a large bag.
That was bulging.
She must've been carrying more rocks than a returning lunar spacecraft.
The lady just looked down at me and smiled, like this was the most normal thing in the world. She'd entered a cave, been plunged into darkness, a tiny hand grabbed hers, suddenly she was with child and also about 30lbs of rock.
Who did she think I was?? Some fairy child doing hard labour?
I let go of her hand and started running. I ran so far I left the park that the cave was in. My parents eventually found me in the car park, trying to slip aboard a coach to Durham.
Ever since, I've had an irrational dislike towards crystals.
(this isn't Daniel Arsham's fault, by the way. This is my issue)
Anyway, I kinda feel like Arsham is like Marmite. Consumed by those with no taste.
Also, he literally has sham in his name.
Also, I kinda feel like these latest prints would look a heck of a lot better without the text on them, and kinda feel that if Daniel were a better artist he would know that.
Anyway, I don't want to go on. People can like whatever they want to like. Art is subjective. All is welcome.
Sorry for the long post. I've had a coffee.
For balance, I'm just going to say I quite liked those decayed baubles of his.
Well, nobody else went, so I guess I'll have to. All aboard, next stop - mental town.

Daniel Arsham ๐บ๐ธ New York โข Eroded Future Relic, by mrizzle on Jun 17, 2020 23:21:57 GMT 1, Well...this thread has given me a much needed chuckle. It is a truly woeful print. I still think his crystal relic Game Boy is really quite cool but thatโs pretty much the only thing I think Iโd ever consider buying and thatโs purely because of misty-eyed sentimentalism.

if you get them don't try hanging them up, the string will break or it will just fall apart
Just leave them in the box, even better don't even open the outer packaging
