Mr Brainwash - a **** or genius, by dashboll on Jan 11, 2015 8:57:16 GMT 1, I don't mind admitting I'm relatively new to urban and street art but there's one thing I struggle to get my head round... Based on extensive research (better known as watching exit through the gift shop  ), Mr Brainwash looks like he's a bit of delboy, or even a little deluded, but his stuff seems to shift and seems to get a level of respect on this forum.
So, what is he? Talented artist, money making machine, or just a $&@%?

He is a great commercial success and he did that in a very creative way. I am not sure if the creativity was completely MBW's. Banksy made the guy and it was Banksy who was the creative one (going by the movie). But it could be that MBW and Banksy did this together, in that case MBW is also a creative guy. And even a great actor/artist. Banksy made a (couple?) statement(s) by creating that movie and also creating MBW. It could be that they are making fun of artists who create art in the way MBW is creating pieces in the movie (Hirst etc ...?). It could also be a statement about art itself. Either way, MBW is a puppet/character (of his own creation perhaps?) and he is playing his role excellent. And going by statements of people who met MBW he seems like a genuine nice guy.
To conclude : In my opinion MBW is a nice friendly talented creative guy. Surrounded by some of the best and talented artists, but the man is not particularly a talented artists himself.

Dumb question. Being a genius doesn't preclude you from being a t**t.
Whatever you think of his art - and I have my own opinions - MBW is very smart. Lot of artists could learn from MBW when it comes to self promotion. In the end it won't be this forum or even the public who decide if he's any good as an artist. It will be the galleries and auction houses.

I wouldn't say he is a genius, however he is quite savy, and figured out how to monetize garbage images purely based on his brand... A brand which was created by Mr B & co.... Whether intentionally or not...

The guy has his head screwed on when it comes to business, marketing and making money, it's the people who have bought into him that are the $&@%'s.

From what I can see in the movie and some of his own posts on FB, he is a bumbling, cheesy, talentless...I can't even say "artist" because he's not (con artist maybe?). But his is a cunning self promoting businessman that's managed to seize on the moment to make a lot of money from manufacturing populist tripe and sell them to people without taste. It actually boggles the mind and I want to think it's actually a joke, except it's not.
