Working overseas for five month and bored....., by ben3486 on Feb 13, 2015 17:37:08 GMT 1, I figured I should do something constructive with my free time as theres nothing to do other than the gym, and I can only hack that place for an hour. Fancying maybe learning Calligraphy, and figured who better to turn to for advice than the forum on where to learn this. Looking at online reading and tutorials. If anyones got an links or advice then I look forward to your replies.

Partly depends on whether you way to do copper plate - thin scroll line stuff (technical term  ) or the swoushy medieval (another technical term) type stuff.
I learnt for about 6/9 months when I was in my mid teens, mainly to improve my handwriting, as it is interesting to know how letters are actually formed.

Get the basics down and then I would love to start with more line work coming off the letters. a bit like the Seb Lester prints on POW at the minute.... but obviously not that intricate. Just something to pass the time and I think Id get a sense of achievement for my time put in, rather than just mindlessly watching TV series like suits and the walking dead haha.

No ones a fan of needle work when its covered in blood from constantly pricking your self with the needle.
and back door banksy's..... i think id struggle with the calligraphy never mind that haha.

It depends which country you are in.
I know that a steady hand is needed so no coffee and some sign writers and pinstripers like a beer or two, to relax a bit before doing the lettering or striping.

Take up Tai chi, yoga or learn to meditate or better still all 3 or if you prefer something a little more combatant learn Judo or if you are more disciplined Aikido or Kendo. All of these will help in so many ways you would not believe or you could just suck piss and do lots of drugs.

Or calligraphy, that's cool too. People will start asking you to write all their wedding invitations after this so that will give you something else to do
For a real challenge with lots of time to kill, try traditional silhouette animation a la lotte reiniger. Not many people will be doing that and it is awesome
