Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by minibear on Feb 26, 2015 13:24:18 GMT 1, I think it's implied here the powerless are the Palestinians. If it's the civilions he should be painting in Jeruzalem as well, there are innocent people killed there too. By painting quotes like that in Gaza he's clearly taking sides.. Hey buckwurst, do you know how many Israeli's have been killed in Israel since this whole thing started? We all hear about the number of missiles being fired from inside Palestine into Israel, but do you know how many people have been killed because of these?

But I am unsure as to whether it is a political statement in the sense of Banksy supports Palestine or if it is more that he is highlighting powerless people (predominantly children), or more generally powerless people all over the world, but Gaza is clearly a powerful place to make that point.

Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by Deleted on Feb 26, 2015 14:08:35 GMT 1, If anyone is interested in some historical background as to the roots of the conflict and how it started, I recommend (if you have 4 hours) a PBS doc made in 2000. Called the 50 years war. It's now on youtube (part 1) (part 2) pretty accurate review of the documentary (not written by me but i agree with most of it) This documentary "only pretends" to be unbiased. It is still valuable, but should contain at least another hour to include Israeli misconduct that is conspicuously absent here. For starters, the beginning really glosses over the fact that theft of the land now called Israel was accomplished primarily through Jewish / Zionist terrorism and that several of Israel's first Prime Ministers were wanted terrorists by the British government. There is a segment dealing with this in the first 30 -45 minutes of the documentary, but it is exceptionally thin, especially on relevant facts; and very heavy on "man-on-the-street" accounts of extremely isolated incidents that are of no great significance. The film never addresses the issue of what right did the UN have in the first place in voting on the disposition of Palestinian land, and not the people who were living there. Why didn't they vote to give the Jews a block of land in Germany, or say, Texas. There is some good information on this era in the documentary, but it is overwhelmed by the fluff, lack of balance, and a great deal of time being devoted to personal accounts of events that have no great overall importance. In the latter sections, there is virtually no mention of Israeli misdeeds during the Oslo period. The documentary never really addresses the issue of settlements except in very brief and superficial terms. The issues surrounding these settlements are astounding & appalling; but no illumination is ever given on this crucial topic. Not once do I remember seeing any mention or coverage of the Israeli policy of "bulldozing" Palestinian homes and buildings. Nor again any mention of how the Israeli's have taken over water rights in the West Bank in an uneven & patently unfair manner. Nor is there any mention of how the Israeli's have created "bypass roads" to make Jews first class inhabitants and herd the Palestinian inhabitants into ever more numerous and smaller concentration camps. Likewise, the Camp David episode was given the traditional pro-Israeli spin only. Overall, I have to say that this is mostly a Pro-Israeli whitewash, but unfortunately it is the best thing like it that is available and is certainly a very valuable historical primer. If I didn't own, I would certainly buy it again. LOL, really... I was just adding something that I had seen many years ago and thought it was petty good. I am making no political statements of my own. You feel the need to post a review "by a customer" from Amazon.

Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by Deleted on Feb 26, 2015 14:09:08 GMT 1, Hey buckwurst, do you know how many Israeli's have been killed in Israel since this whole thing started? We all hear about the number of missiles being fired from inside Palestine into Israel, but do you know how many people have been killed because of these? Iโm really sorry if I offended anyone with my opinion. Like I said, Iโm NOT informed enough to take either side in this conflict. No I donโt know how many Israelis or Palestinians were killed in this conflict over the years. Iโm pretty sure itโs not balanced at all. But every innocent live lost on either side is one too many. This will be my last reaction regarding this tragedy that has been going on for years and probably will for many years to come. It will need wise men on both sides to make concessions that will not be popular on both sides of this conflict but I truly hope that a solution will one day be found and peace is achieved.
The way I see it is that some factions in Israel have been squeezing and provoking the Palestinians for years.
Some see it as wanting to drive the Palestinians into the sea.
The Palestinian people are victims of their own leaders as well who profit from this ongoing war with Israel.
The West is to blame too for not recognising palestine as a sovereign state and creating democratic elections and also keeping Israel from expanding it's borders.
Some say that Israel has the right to exist because some guy called Moses and others said so.
Some say that Palestine has no right because some old religious book doesnt include them and history type people say that palestine wa snever a country.
Well big deal.
Neither was the USA ever the property of Europeans and neither was Oztralia the property of English convicts.
The Palestinians do own their land because they have lived there for centuries and established ownership.
Israel also has the right to exist today and is not going away.
So unless the big boys in the West start knocking some heads together and establish a peaceful solution, then more innocents and children will be slaughtered.
Kosovo was recognised. Israel was recognised and so should Palestine be recognised.

Speaking personally, I wasn't offended at all. I've got more then a little Israel blood in me, so am used to being offended... ;p
I can tell you the numbers of casualties are grossly skewed, furthermore the Israeli deaths have been 99% military personnel (from what I understand). There's no doubt who are the "Powerful" and "Powerless" in this discussion. Your comments aren't offensive, simply misguided/misinformed I think. And you're not a unique case, the media has wildly misrepresented the whole problem for political ends, to the point where, unless you dig into things for yourself, the average Joe with a fleeting concern for human rights just won't comprehend what's going on. What's unfortunate is that Opinion and Fact are distinctly different things, certainly in this case. And don't get me wrong, we all live busy lives, it's hard to spend what little free time we have digging in to find the real Facts, (we shouldn't bloody have to if our media was apolitical), which for me is the poignant message Banksy is going for with his 'sitting on the fence saying nothing' piece here (you like the way I brought it back to Banski).
Wise men on both sides, yeah, that's never going to happen. What's really need is the eradication of Fascism, Religious ideology and Israel's pursuance of making Israel a 'Jewish State' as opposed to a Country.

Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by Deleted on Feb 26, 2015 14:18:19 GMT 1, politics religions sports
three things I tend not to discuss with strangers.
that being said, Bansky's new project has me thinking about Russia in Eastern Ukraine, Boko Harem in Nigeria, Turkey and Iraq and the Kurdish people, as well as other issues around the world and in my back yard. I don't mean to pick sides and fight, but just think. what can I do? nothing? something? I am more awake and interested in these issues today than I was yesterday this time. All due to an artist's work. My class is about to start reading "A Little Piece of Ground," so this is all very timely as well.
Sometimes I get lost in the fog of the unimportant in life.

Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by Deleted on Feb 26, 2015 14:23:28 GMT 1, LOL, really... I was just adding something that I had seen many years ago and thought it was petty good. I am making no political statements of my own. You feel the need to post a review "by a customer" from Amazon.
www.amazon.ca/product-reviews/B00004TX2W
as i clearly stated above the review was not written by me. there are worse reviews on the documentary and this reviewer gave it 3 stars (out of 5) and also backed up what he wrote with examples and facts. I have watched the pbs documentary before and i agree with everything the reviewer wrote. the reviewer also clearly states "Overall, I have to say that this is mostly a Pro-Israeli whitewash, but unfortunately it is the best thing like it that is available and is certainly a very valuable historical primer. If I didn't own, I would certainly buy it again." so basically it is an American made documentary..... not really neutral or unbiased but overall contains very important information that must be watched as part of wider viewing and reading about this subject. to take a pbs documentary and digest it all as fact and the beginning and end of your research would be unwise. maybe you can point out a review by someone who's opinion you respect or meets your reviewing standards, i'll be happy to read it. LOL again. Who said to take as an end of research or even a start.... And if your idea of research is googling amazon I feel sorry for you.

Brings my thoughts back to the Coca-Cola bottle piece Banksy did on advertising. Our lives are filled with distractions (purposefully), and are encouraged to use 'smart' tools that think for us. There's no money to be made in people having reflection time/thinking time so it's not encouraged.

Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by Rouen Cathedral on Feb 26, 2015 14:36:17 GMT 1, Good stuff
Now here's the question. Does everyone 100% believe 'Banksy' actually goes and paints all these pieces?

Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by Deleted on Feb 26, 2015 14:40:08 GMT 1, want to help then be more proactive about it - boycott Israeli goods, write to your MP, or even donate to organisations that are helping Palestinians
www.palestinecampaign.org
They have had Banksy cards on there for years
www.palestinecampaign.org/support/products-page/
No good just talking about it on an art forum - take a side - help the powerless

Obviously with a team and some diplomatic go betweening in order to be able to do the art there.

Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by Deleted on Feb 26, 2015 14:43:58 GMT 1, LOL again. Who said to take as an end of research or even a start.... And if your idea of research is googling amazon I feel sorry for you. thank you for feeling sorry for me. i bow down to your superior knowledge. any more unbiased PBS documentaries you can recommend?? anything on Iraq, Afghanistan, cuba, south America, corruption or any other American funded wars would be appreciated. i could have easily have posted a documentary by al jazeera or any other pro palestine media but that doesn't help the cause, helping the cause is people like you pointing to pro israeli media then acting like a kid when i point out that what you posted isn't the a-z definative one stop shop for all your Israel v Palestine info. In PBS we trust. In PBS we trust. Read The Nakba - known as The a Palestinian Exodus of 1948

Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by Deleted on Feb 26, 2015 14:44:47 GMT 1, Iโm really sorry if I offended anyone with my opinion.
Kosovo isnt wholly recognised though it is Ploppi- why is this ?
