Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by loother on Feb 26, 2015 0:47:13 GMT 1, I visited Gaza a while ago, I suppose a decade or so back. It was pretty distressing then, and I don't imagine that anything's improved since. This is phenomenal and important work. My cap is doffed.

I did jump in on page 1. I concede my comment about Greece was off the mark, but I did say it was just a guess. Stand by everything else I said.

Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by Deleted on Feb 26, 2015 1:08:22 GMT 1, Touche, I suppose. I think people who were praising the level of quality of the stencil image and questioning its meaning in relation to the story of Niobe or the Greek economy were missing the point even more, to be honest. Impressive use of context is an extreme understatement here. Nothing wrong with trying to attempt interpret a piece out of context, I enjoyed myself as I am sure others did as well. If you were following the thread and participating in the dialogue about the image (not the quality of a stencil or lack of whimsy or whatever) for the first six pages, that is exactly what this forum is about. Obviously, Banksy is very familiar Greek mythology. If you believe that Niobe was selected out of pure aesthetics than we will agree to disagree. EU v. Greece or Isreal v. Palestine or Ukraine v. Russia, etc... Variations on a similar theme.
If Banksy wanted us to have the full monty right up front, Banksy would have done that. He left out the context to provoke a discussion.
I love that this simple image stirred so many questions in my mind. #art

I think that kind of discussion is exactly what Banksy wanted, so the video would hit even harder.
I definitely don't think Niobe was chosen for aesthetic purposes; I simply thought the discussion was a bit off point. I was in the thread, stand by what I said before.

Banksy in Gaza โข 2015 ๐ต๐ธ, by Oski on Feb 26, 2015 4:27:55 GMT 1, While the spray work is exceptional on this piece, I think it's lacking in either (1) Banky's wit/humor and (2) appropriation of site specific contextual elements. Both are whimsical ways to draw attention to the issues Banksy wants to illuminate. It may be a poignant message being conveyed, but this piece is really quite sullen and an outright downer. I take this back. After seeing the video and the piece in the proper context. I think it's perfect and as powerful a piece as he's ever done...full stop.
