sixsense nicely put. i agree with basically everything you said.
One other thing that I was thinking about... with most other artists, their path from the bottom of the art world is a very slow and gradual upwards curve. with kaws i feel like he had about a 10 year period where his stock only went up a little bit, and then in the past 3 years has basically shot straight up like a rocket.

Black Sponge Bob and Paper Smile each priced at $4k USD. That's almost free in GBP!
Cheaper than 1/10th of the new set and IMHO way nicer. Who wants to own 1/10 of a piece of art anyway? KAWS prints are amazing. If you can afford a set go for it but buying part of a set seems a bit strange to me. king of like buying individual puzzle pieces.
Shoot me a PM if interested. I am firm on the price because I think it is a bargain and I'm pretty sure KAWS will not see prints under $4k again. Once sold I don't think I'll ever be able to replace them.

so, as a member here mentioned, don't hate the player, hate the game.

I'm not talking about it in relation to prices, because I know the dude is a legend and all and obviously people are willing to pay top dollar for his pieces, but the work itself. I just see paintings that look liked zoomed in images from a cartoon. What am I missing?
Question for fans: What about these images do you like so much? What makes you think he's a top-tier artist? What would you say or show to a non believer like myself to turn me on to his work?

I don't think you can judge an artist on a particular piece, or set of pieces even, and say "what's so good about them?". It's like taking just Banksy prints and saying, "they're OK, but a bit like newspaper cartoons, what's the big deal!?".
He has a history and reason for painting characters like the Companion and SpongeBob, and that's it.

Well, you said you understood his legacy in the world of street art, and I think that's the appeal to some people. Of course, aesthetically, particular work might not appeal to all.

You don't get his 93 street graff ? you don't get his bus stop ads ?

Kaws • No Reply • 10 Print Set, by Deleted on Mar 22, 2015 0:55:54 GMT 1, His graffiti was mediocre at best but I really liked the busstops. The toys were what got me in to collecting really. The Chums and Companions I dig very much and are very iconic characters. That's all I have left of him, a white Chum and a black '99 Companion. There was a lot more over the years though, never lost any money on that I can tell you. After that he went on this whole cartoon character craze with his toys, Tweety, Snoopy. I didn't really care for them. He started painting Spongebob, which I hate. Kinda moved away from toys around that time anyways. I really like some of the newer works, yes they are still cartoon characters but now more abstract and in vibrant colors. I wouldn't mind it on the wall but by now that ship has sailed. I enjoyed the bus stop pieces as well, but that's pretty much it. I love the absurdist humor of SpongeBob, so I really wanted to like Kaws' take, but it just didn't click with me. I don't see it adding anything to the already great image of SBSP
