Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by mmmike on Mar 25, 2011 18:51:46 GMT 1, There seems to be a big range on these. Unsigned and made after his death if you are talkign about the Icons so limited demand. But likely that has increased with CYW. How much is the offer?

Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by daveart on Mar 25, 2011 19:01:55 GMT 1, probably need to clarify exactly what you are looking at. As mmmike mentions there is an a print in the Icons series of the barking dog with both a red and white version. unsigned. There is also a Pop Shop IV print titled "Barking Dogs" - this is signed. but much smaller in physical size.
I am sure at a gallery in New York either of these would run $10,000- $15,000. Pop international in NYC usually has some of these as well as rogallery.com - you could confirm the gallery pricing and then go from there. maybe $5 - 7K in a private sale?

These came out after his death. They are signed by the estate not Haring. I think if you are patient you can get one for around $4,000 but if you must have it fast likely $10,000 and up.

Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by mmmike on Mar 25, 2011 20:41:29 GMT 1, Just saw your price 3,000 GBP. I think that is a fair price. but again not signed by Haring. The Pop Shop dogs barking one is signed but not as nice IMO. I saw one on the weekend in NY. The gallery wanted $17,000. Crazy. i think it should be closer to $10k but I'm not an expert.

Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by Zippy on Mar 25, 2011 21:12:28 GMT 1, Interesting thread.
I had no idea some were produced and signed by his estate after his death.
That feels wrong to me as it's just a case of cashing in IMO.

Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by als33 on Mar 29, 2011 15:17:55 GMT 1, I'm not sure that being estate signed should bring the value down on these - I was under the impression that the icon prints (as well as most of the other 1990 prints and the Against All Odds book) were things that Haring was actively working on and involved with, but the final printing occurred either soon after his death or when he was too sick to sign them. They're in the catologue raisonnee and I'm pretty sure they're considered real, official Haring prints.
I think the closest analogy would be some of Warhol's 1987 prints like Moonwalk, Red Lenin and the camoflauge prints that came out after his death and are estate signed, but are very much considered to be part of his body of work.
Anyway, it's a great print and I'd probably be looking for one myself, if I had gotten that red CYW I requested in the lottery.

Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by daveart on Mar 29, 2011 15:59:04 GMT 1, i agree with als33 - To me the icon series highlight very directly Keith's 'Icons' the foundation images for so many of his other works. dog, baby, angel, bat, etc - its his alphabet. it would be great of course if they were all signed.. but it does not diminish to me the importance of those images in the rest of his work. There is also at least one pop shop series that is unsigned by Keith but signed and released by the estate. All part of Keith's vision for what he wanted to have released. it would be very different to me if after his death they sat down and came up with some new prints... buy the dog - you won't regret it.

Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by Brushstrokes 75 on Mar 29, 2011 16:03:20 GMT 1, Different talk with warhol as most of his print that are pre-70's were not signed by him... What we consider to be his signature at the time was the signature of his manager lol
As long as they are approved it doesn't matter who put pen to paper.
As for prices, should be along what was firstly mentionned. ยฃ2,5K to ยฃ3K :
www.waddingtons.ca/auction/16october2008/catalogue/0/0055/
(ยฃ2K hammer at the time)
www.bonhams.com/eur/auction/14942/lot/151/
ยฃ2K hammer
There was one in Germany 2 years ago sold for 2300 euros
Villa Grisebach Auktionen GmbH: Saturday, November 29, 2008 [Lot 00920]
Might have raised interest with Banksy's CYW but nothing near $10K IMHO

I don't know for certain, but would say less than the ~$10k some galleries have quoted. I thought there was mention on here somewhere that a private sale should trade between $4-5k USD...

Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by linter on Jul 11, 2012 1:14:42 GMT 1, the coa from this print would likely come from martin lawrence galleries, which sold the print originally. if you ask them, they will tell you the retail is 12k - 14k USD or more ... and that, as a seller, you would be able to net somewhat below that, though not much below, at legit auction, ie not ebay. don't know if that's true or not; still seem really high for a print.
if you look at ebay completed results, you'll see one of the barking dogs prints that went unsold at 2.5k. i looked into it and determined to my satisfaction that it was a fraud. i gather other people did too, otherwise it would have sold.
be careful out there. *lots* of haring forgeries are in circulation.

Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by mmmike on Jul 11, 2012 2:27:19 GMT 1, The Brooklyn Museum gift shop had all the icon prints for $6k each or $25k for the set. I would guess those would come with certificates from the KH foundation as they were supplied by them. I was there and saw the prints on the first day the exhibit which was a while back so I'm not sure if they still have them but it is worth a call.

Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by linter on Jul 11, 2012 10:29:34 GMT 1, Oops, my bad, forget everything I said. I was talking about the Pop Shop IV barking dogs print, the one w/ two dogs barking at each other, which is different from the Icons one. AFAIK, the P.S IV is signed, because it was printed in 89, while the Icons one is not, since it came out shortly after Haring's death in 90.
Most people do not care about the lack of signature, I gather, because the Icons series was fully overseen by Haring, he just didn't get the chance to sign them. Sigh.

They were not made for the Brooklyn Museum show they were done just before Keith died. When I think Keith Haring I think of these images. He did subway art and other street art but he also did very polished pop shop friendly images and products these prints IMO are as Keith Haring as any. Great images. If I was stinking rich I would certainly buy a set.

Ok, sounds like you are sure about this. I asked they people in the shop about them, they told me this, happily stand corrected about their origin, but still think they looked like plastic.

Keith Haring โข Icons Series, by daveart on Mar 25, 2015 1:33:14 GMT 1, Hi all, for fun I wanted to post information about Keith Haring icons. I have been a KH fan for many years and made it a bit of a quest to track down all of the icon images. I know there are other KH fans on the board and am sure they will jump in with more information .. The prices of some of the current artists are catching up to the lower end KH pieces so I think these are reasonable for people to look at. I have seen the Icons available for 6K-12K USD depending on the image and source. I don't want to predict future value but would be happy to argue that KH will not be forgotten by the art world any time soon.
Some collectors knock the Icon series as they are not signed by KH but signed by the executor of the KH estate - Julia Gruen. They are stamped on the back and signed and dated with the edition number in pencil. You need to look for this and get a picture if buying one. Many people frame them with the estate stamp visible through the back of the frame for just this reason. On the up side - I think it is important that KH approved these pieces prior to his death but did not live to see them and sign them. I find this different than say the estate deciding to create and publish the series many years after death. I dont know this for fact but believe these are the Icons KH personally felt most important from his vocabulary and was instructive on their size, color, etc for the series. For these reasons and the fact that they are just stunning and make people happy to see them - I am happy to collect them.
One thing that does not come across in pictures is the black lines are raised/embossed in the paper and this really makes them pop in person and gives them a bit of a three dimensional feel.
I periodically send galleries or sellers snippy emails because they will list these as "signed" current example:
(NOTE.. copy and paste the whole url below into a browser) www.guyhepner.com/artists/#!ART23/Keith-Haring/COL79/Icons/PIE406/icons-2
Guy Hepner is a well known and respected gallery and for them to say "Signed: YES " i believe is deceptive. Do your homework with KH pieces created in 89/90 time frame. Icons and some Pop Shop series pieces are not signed.
Here is a link to the full series.
www.artnet.com/artists/keith-haring/icons-a-l5PpGF5G2WBYLXzwtwHonA2
and most importantly .. here is the box that i took to the framers today:
and what was inside <shown with potential framing material> :
and here are a few different pictures of other Icons i already have on the wall in various settings and configurations. I really dont think you can go wrong with these and they are a great way to get into collecting KH artwork.

Here is a link to the full series. www.artnet.com/artists/keith-haring/icons-a-l5PpGF5G2WBYLXzwtwHonA2and most importantly .. here is the box that i took to the framers today: and what was inside <shown with potential framing material> : and here are a few different pictures of other Icons i already have on the wall in various settings and configurations. I really dont think you can go wrong with these and they are a great way to get into collecting KH artwork.
