International money transfers ....., by fattyramone on Mar 26, 2015 12:38:08 GMT 1, It's been quite a few years now since I've needed to do a international money transfer as a payment method. For some reason or other it always seems to be Germany that likes to deal with IBAN transfers and won't accept payment in any other form.
From memory it was always a long winded and expensive way of doing business , needing a physical trip to my bank and lots of form filling etc, etc , So I cautiously gave these guys a try
transferwise.com
it couldn't be easier , it took all of 10 mins from scratch and it was done and dusted.
and the cost? ...I transferred โฌ520 at a total cost to me of ยฃ1.86
very impressed , recommended.
...and "no" , I don't work for them!

International money transfers ....., by Deleted on Mar 26, 2015 13:08:38 GMT 1, thats not bad, IBAN is just a European wide standard code that utilises the account detials and SWIFT codes you would normally use if you asked yer bank to do it - mine demand ยฃ25 for this service!
it shouldnt be a long winded process as any IBAN can be broken down to its constituent fields that are understandable when disentagled- for some reason, we still haker after sort codes and shit here rather than adopt the more logical IBAN sequence

International money transfers ....., by fattyramone on Mar 26, 2015 13:19:24 GMT 1, My only minor gripe was that despite me completing it on Thursday morning was that it wasn't in their account till Monday morning , although I was made aware of this instantly .
I guess this is more the fault of the banking system in general rather than the fault of "Transferwise".

International money transfers ....., by Deleted on Mar 26, 2015 13:34:35 GMT 1, There will not be any protection for a bare bones money transfer system - they will guarantee it gets to the account you provided and thats it
TBF though, if you did it through your bank from your account, it would not have any protection either
only use BT when you are 110% sure of the reciepient

International money transfers ....., by Deleted on Mar 26, 2015 13:36:59 GMT 1, they may have rinsed out on the FX side- depending on how you did it- but you would not really know this at the time, they would just quote a an amount in GBP to get XXXX Euros- this spread can be pretty wide

International money transfers ....., by fattyramone on Mar 26, 2015 13:50:27 GMT 1, FX side ??.....what's that? .....Currency exchange I'm guessing?
If so your probably right.
But I guess all all financial exchange institutions use the buy/sell rate under/over the base rate to do business.
And yes , I take on board your warning to need to have trust in who you send money transfers too

International money transfers ....., by kfroms on Mar 26, 2015 14:44:12 GMT 1, I am using Transfer Wise since more then a year now as I got annoyed with Natwest's charges. Great service, reliable and they keep adding currencies / countries.

International money transfers ....., by ashley123 on Oct 22, 2021 23:17:54 GMT 1, Sorry for bumping the thread, but I need to transfer money abroad for the first time. What services do you use? I heard that Remitly is popular. I've already addressed it via remitly phone number and found out the details. But maybe someone can recommend other good services.
