Roseberry's should put the sale results online tomorrow.

Some pièces went for high prices and some picture frames sold for a few thousand too.

I know, frames are getting expensive and you can still find some nice frames on flea markets in France.
Also those big gilded carved mirrors that need repair to the carvings are low prices.

Gutted I missed this.

In terms of profile and prestige among auction houses whose businesses cover Modern and Contemporary Art, I'd classify Roseberys as third-tier or provincial. The location of West Norwood is in zone 3, which is some psychological distance from the centre of London. For many Londoners, it would be simpler (and almost quicker) to travel to Gare du Nord in Paris. I say all this in a clinical manner, without judgement — though I appreciate these words can be misinterpreted as sneering.

You can get a reasonable feel of the place from its website, both the substance and general style. It's a little dull, old-fashioned or traditional, perhaps a bit cheesy. The catalogue photos are relatively poor (too small, lacking in sufficient detail), and the lot descriptions have zero information offered about the condition of the works for sale.

Looking through the pieces this auction house has accepted on consignment will also give you a good idea of what you'd be dealing with. The forthcoming Modern and Contemporary Prints auction, for example, is a real hotchpotch. It has a few interesting items, but plenty of other pieces ("After" prints, lesser works by established artists, works by artists with high-street-gallery popularity like Beryl Cook, "Warhol" Sunday B Morning prints, and random ephemera) which would be quickly turned down by other auction houses that have the luxury of greater choice and option of being picky.

The advantage however is that, when desirable works are featured at venues like Roseberys, they're more likely to fly under the radar. An opportunity therefore exists for picking up the odd bargain — although you may be competing against dealers who spend a great deal of time specifically seeking out these less-familiar venues in order to find deals themselves.

I have heard nothing bad about Roseberys. But then again, given its relatively low profile (and besides what's in this thread), I have not really heard anything particularly good either.

My own very limited personal experience with Roseberys was positive. I'm pleased with the service received, especially since I wasn't a client. Last year, I requested clarification on the terminology used in a catalogue of theirs (i.e. not a query relating to a specific work for sale, which the auction house would have had an interest in promoting). The friendly, clear and comprehensive email response I received came 36 hours later from a director. This also illustrates another advantage of dealing with smaller auction houses, which I'm sure you're already aware of: One is more likely to have direct access to senior staff and decision-makers.

I collect some relatively obscure artists that are in museums but not commanding huge prices. I will bid on a few pieces of they trade anywhere near the estimates. Purely for my enjoyment and display. Thanks
