BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by smokey on Apr 13, 2015 22:00:48 GMT 1, Don't think its a shock but Morons tops my list & one day I hope to be lucky enough to make it my first Banksy print. No secret behind the meaning. A man coming to grips w/ the headaches that accompany stardom. The obvious being the outrage prices his pieces were fetching, including the public pieces removed & Vermin verified. But the f*ck you to the art world also served to keep himself from being perceived by early admirers/collectors, and perhaps more importantly his early graffiti friends, as a sell out. Such a simple statement dealing with what I can only imagine was a very un-simple time for the artist. Keeping his identity hidden(which by that time didn't hurt sales but I'm guessing was also a personal choice) and his "street cred", while at the same time staking his place in the history of art. Of course I could be completely wrong & he just found an amusing way to throw the word shit on a print.

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by bgt5002 on Apr 14, 2015 5:31:54 GMT 1, Police kids and NOLA for me. Both are more relevant than they were when created given recent pop culture/timely events (especially police kids). NOLA will always make me feel for a town that many overlooked during Katrina. Sad that it's out of my price range, but really happy I picked up PK some years back.

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by andyroo0312 on Apr 14, 2015 6:30:15 GMT 1, Best Banksys are Trolleys, Donuts, CND, and Toxic Mary, why??? Because they are the ones i own. Do you own them because they're the best or are they best now you own them? So, which other one would you really want if you could have a free choice ( not for financial reasons). Fair question and one that deserves a honest answer. Yes they are the best because they are the ones i own and if i had a choice i would swap them all plus other contraband for a RC and a CYW then i would own my 2 favourite Banksys that just happen to represent the beginning and the end of the public release prints.

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by TM on Apr 14, 2015 11:49:12 GMT 1, Don't own a banksy print myself. But i love morons because i think it is quite funny how he is thinking about his own art and its value. Maybe i get something wrong on this, but in my opinion he is wondering about how he could get to be a part of this crazy art auction world with its crazy prices...
Edit: didn't see smokey post before posting myself, sorry

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by naughtyshorty on Apr 14, 2015 13:41:06 GMT 1, Great thread.
I love sale ends as I think it is so simple but fantastically executed. A great sarcastic tilt to over consumerism in our time. Awesome.
I also love stop and search. The sheer indignation on Dorothy's face is fantastic and the detail of her dress and its pattern is amazing. I love how this is off set by the baby blue gloves.
whilst nola and gwb are great, I think these two are the best image wise. Conversely I absolutely hate toxic Mary and Christ with shopping bags. I hate the pixilation on TM and not sure I have ever got cwsb. Lots of his early work I'm not quite so keen on....

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by Lroy on Apr 14, 2015 14:12:33 GMT 1, I think to judge a print, we must be in front of it. Per example, in photo the print could seem " weak " because we don't see the paper ( texture, real colour ) , etc... In photo, so, I like a Lot Clockwork Britain... ;-)
And I don't like Pulp Fiction per example and some other... But Monkey Queen, Rude Copper and the one that Lonely Farmer told about are simple and great. Love in the hair is great to ( for the hairdressers ) ... The one at the top of the post too.
We should see them in real I guess .
I guess to get one, one day.

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by smokey on Apr 14, 2015 14:22:05 GMT 1, A thread for discussing which Banksy print you think is best and why ? Thought it would be interesting to see and hear members opinions. Post the image and write a little on why, artistically, you think it tops the rest. ApplauseI love that this references Dadaism and early agit prop and Political collage work from the likes of John Heartfeld to Kennard. It shows his knowledge of political art and is the one print where the artist seems to have injected some creativity in the process. Conceptually, one of his strongest prints in my opinion. Hey Nuart. The Dada movement was what reignited my love of art years ago but been a while since I've read up on it. What is he referencing? Btw, I dare anyone to look at a Hausmabb, Hoch, or Schwitters piece & not be amazed, especially given the era & conditions. Even Janco's later works after his move are amazing.

Was thinking along the lines of its Anti War and colonial sentiments alongside his contemporary take on "collage", if that's what this piece is, Dada I guess being born out of both of these topics and techniques. The roughness of how it's pieced together from found imagery and the obvious "erased" parts, it could have been a shiny "pop art" gem, instead he seems to have dug back into deeper territory which for a print, we hadn't seen from him before.

I think it hardked back to wanting the Surfers Against Sewage board he did similar.

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by Agent Provocateur on Apr 14, 2015 21:29:52 GMT 1, Glitter Gorilla... because something so large and hairy trying to hide it's identity with a small glittery fashion accessory is hilarious (not forgetting the artist had become larger than life by then and has a shy streak)... but the best bit was it was never released to the ravaging hoards.
The timing of it's non-release says a lot about the meteoric rise in Banksy's popularity and prices before it, and how afterwards there was a distinct shift in focus from under selling his work by £1000s to a more standard (if there's anything remotely standard with this guy!) model.
A sort of been there, done that, this is what you could've had... but with the avarice and greed that drowned out any rationality it was time to move on.
[Edit: was meant to conclude with... The main reason why I think it's his best print is in it's non-existence, I've seen a picture of it in the POW magazine and think it's great, but by not releasing it it has more relevance to what he's trying to do and say than all the released prints. Even tho it doesn't exist it is an important moment in Banksy's career. I think.

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by met on Apr 15, 2015 1:58:13 GMT 1, For me, its hands down "Flags." In my humble opinion, that image is so powerful and nuanced that it overshadows the rest of his commercial work by comparison. Whether you interpret it as a glorification of the American dream by those who realistically can't achieve it, or an anti-war image that depicts an America so obsessed with war that it chooses to value death and destruction over providing for its lower class, I think it maintains a power and relevance that will only grow as time goes on. Plus, while the paper stock is admittedly lacking, the execution serves to bolster and enhance the image and message. The grainy black ink against a stark silver sets forth creates a grainy mechanical atmosphere that perfectly represents the proletariat. Can I ask how long you've been familiar with this Banksy print image, and whether it's always been your favourite?

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by Howard Johnson on Apr 15, 2015 4:15:13 GMT 1, Met,
I've been familiar with the image since I got into urban art about three years ago, and it's always been my favorite. I think it's one of his most distinctly american pieces (obviously), and may hold more relevance for those of us in the states. I'll also toss out "Have a Nice Day" which I feel is vastly underrated. Obviously it has a universal message, but with the light being she's on militarized police in America and the brutal consequences of that trend, the image seems to become more relevant by the day.

Thank you for the considered response.
This whole thread is an enjoyable read. For me it's one of the worthier current threads on the forum.
As @martedanielsen stated earlier, the Why is much more interesting than the What.
We often see exclamations of approval like "Stunning!" but with zero indication about why the relevant artwork is considered stunning. In the interest of dialogue and critical thought, I believe that offering some kind of explanation should be actively encouraged. This is in line with a broader position I share with many others: As individuals and as members of society, we should be asking — and asking ourselves — more questions.
If you can make the time, I have two follow-up queries for you. The first is ribbing, rhetorical, and the same comment I previously made with another forum member as a point of pedantry. The second is my actual question.
1. When you look at your favourite Banksy image, how many flags do you see?
2. What are your thoughts on the source imagery the artist used? I wondered whether you considered that source imagery to be less, just as, or possibly even more powerful than Banksy's piece.

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by Howard Johnson on Apr 15, 2015 21:45:30 GMT 1, 1. When you look at your favourite Banksy image, how many flags do you see? 2. What are your thoughts on the source imagery the artist used? I wondered whether you considered that source imagery to be less, just as, or possibly even more powerful than Banksy's piece. Thanks Met, I too find these sort of discussions much more enlightening then a lot of the financial talk on these threads. Plus, I love hearing others thoughts on the different Banksy pieces. To answer your first question I only see one flag, but I get the feeling that you mean something beyond the surface. By source imagery are you referring to the Iwo Jima picture? I seem to remember another source photograph was used but am having trouble finding it. Obviously, the Iwo Jima picture is burning into many American's minds as a defining portrait of Americana, and the triumph of "good" over evil in a war that was for the most part very black and white. Moreover, as all good americans are taught in history class, WWII was a defining economic moment that pulled America out of the great depression.
That is no longer the case. The modern American military campaigns have lined the pockets of the super rich, and decimated resources once allocated to impoverished citizens. To me this image stands as a testament of that fact, and while it is extremely critical of such actions it also celebrates the American spirit to stand resilient in the face of a seemingly bleak situation. Therein lies the brilliance of the image, a perfect depiction of the oxymoronic celebration of America by a population it could care less about. I personally worked on the legal team that fought the corruption perpetrated by Halliburton during the Iraq war, so my viewpoint and appreciation for this image is probably quite different then many others.

Thanks for the additional post. My first question was just a long-winded way of confirming the print is called Flag (rather than Flags).
In my second question, I was indeed including Joe Rosenthal's 1945 photograph, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, in my reference.
More particularly, however, I was referring to the well-known 1987 photograph by Eli Reed, being the primary source image. Click on image 4 of 34 in this link:

While I do enjoy Banksy's reworking and collage because it adds another layer and a national-historical dimension, Eli Reed's photo on its own with the Harlem backdrop is just as powerful for me, if not more powerful.
As an aside, given the timing of the original Banksy creation (for the Barely Legal exhibition in Los Angeles), I like to think the piece was also a tribute to Joe Rosenthal, who died earlier that year, in August 2006.
1. BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by Lunch Special on Apr 16, 2015 5:39:08 GMT 1, I too own a silver flag print. Purchased in 2010 for what I believe to have been around £375. Funny how no one liked these cause they were from what I was told, the largest edition and belived to all have minor imperfections.

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by Snakes on Apr 16, 2015 7:38:26 GMT 1, Trolley hunters as it is the only real Banksy print that I have left. I also like it as it reminds me of an old neighbour from when I was a kid who used to steal trolleys and sell them for scrap metal.

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by phly on Apr 17, 2015 7:25:15 GMT 1, Banksy Morons
After seeing it up for auction it got a whole new meaning for me. Art imitating life, or life imitating art?
And the fact that I feel like a moron when I use (a lot of) money on overprised posters makes it even better

BANKSY, BEST PRINT AND WHY, by Howard Johnson on Apr 17, 2015 21:11:50 GMT 1, Met,
Thanks for sharing that photo! Its quite haunting and extremely powerful. I did not realize that Banksy appropriated the imagery to such an extent. The does change my mindset a bit on this print. I think it remains one of his best images, but such blatant appropriation does kind of make me lose a bit of respect for the image as a distinctly Banksy interpretation of America. I know Shepard Fairey gets a lot of flack on the appropriation front, but I respect what he does to change the context and meaning of the images he uses. It would be interesting to see what the Reed estate thinks of the image from a copyright prospective, from just a cursory overview it does scream of infringement.
