St Georges Day - Giveaway, by Grafter on Apr 23, 2015 22:20:01 GMT 1, Hi,
I wanted to do something to help celebrate St Georges Day but, true to form, I left it way too late and have spent the past few hours getting a little stencil piece done that I think looks nice and will also give us a chance to have a bit of fun...... So i'm gonna give a few away...
It is an A3 sized hand sprayed piece which I have signed and will post out at my own expense. If I have enough time I may even colour a few of them in,........make them look all pretty like.!
I'll make between 30 or 50 of them, depending on how popular it proves, and If you want one here's what you have to do..... Make a post on this thread and tell us about someone (famous or not) or something that sums up the English way of life for you. Then PM me your address and I'll get one in the post to you.
I'll start it off by nominating my Postman. He's a decent enough chap and he likes a drink but he seems to suffer from number blindness at least twice a week and everyone down my street gets next doors post. The thing is that because he's such a nice bloke no one moans and we all just spend the day re-posting the mail to each other. In fact I've grown to quite look forward to it and have made a bit of a game out of trying to guess who's letters I'm going to get this week.

St Georges Day - Giveaway, by Dr Plip on Apr 23, 2015 22:46:03 GMT 1, What a fun idea and generous gesture.
I don't know if this qualifies as Englishness, but there's an old man that lives round the corner from me. Lovely guy and I usually see him about twice a day. First few years I knew him, he would always ride past on his bicycle. Once in the morning and then again in the evening. Always going to the corner shop at the end of the road. I often threatened to buy him some lycra shorts. Anyway, sometime last year, he had a spell in hospital and wasn't as steady with his balance after that. But since then, twice a day, every day, he walks his bike to the shop and back. Doesn't try to ride it. Just walks it. I've asked him "Why'd you still take the bike?" and he just answered "For the exercise."
I can give you an example of my own Englishness. When crossing into the States, I had to be processed by the border control. I walked into the building and it was only myself and the guards behind the kiosks. The whole room was laid out with that snaking, queuing barrier thing. Anyway, one of the guards looked at me and called me over. Instead of walking 12 feet directly to his kiosk, I proceeded to walk down, and up, and down, and up, and down, and up the empty queue line, up and down the room, while all the border guards just stared at me, wondering what the hell I was doing.
Hey, a queue is a queue. Even if you're the only one in it.
One final thing (Columbo style)
There's a play park near where I live. One day, I noticed someone had left a pair of soiled knickers and a broken vibrator ring (the ring part was broken) by the fence.
The knicker's went almost immediately (not to me), but the ring stayed there for a couple of days. Then the third day, it vanished.
Next day, a handwritten notice appeared on the fence, in the exact same spot the vibrator ring had been. Written in the unmistakable scrawl of an elderly individual. "FOUND. HEARING AID. CALL: 01789......."
What a fun idea and generous gesture.

St Georges Day - Giveaway, by reyn on Apr 23, 2015 23:00:07 GMT 1, Nice St Georges day gesture and giveaway Grafter. If only I could spend a few hours getting a little stencil piece done .
For me something that sums up the English way of life is the good old English seaside.
As the dad of twin seven year old boys its the ideal way of tiring them out and imposing on them all the 'fun and games' my dad made me do.....starting with the obvious question on the way there of.......wait for it....... yep that's right........Are we there yet? countless times. Then the games begin football, rounders, rockpooling, digging holes, burying each other etc etc only breaking for the dreaded sandy butties and 99 ice cream. Once the beach is done with its got to be a trip down the pier for a pounds worth of 2p on the push penny arcade finishing off with fish and chips before heading home........ sunburnt of course.
Classy day out eh but so English

St Georges Day - Giveaway, by fattyramone on Apr 24, 2015 0:47:27 GMT 1, Mine is an "old guy" called Tess Stobard ,no doubt he was only about 40 at the time , but 40 was "old" when your only 8 yourself.
He took control of the building of the dam needed to build our swimming hole over the brook in our village in Ynysybwl , South Wales every year that just seemed to miraculously appear , we took it for granted that it would be there every summer.
It wasn't until I got older that I could appreciate the huge effort it took on his part , as the dam itself was made of sandbags filled full of sand. No doubt the sandbags themselves were "borrowed" from our coal colliery but where on earth did he get all the sand from?...and there must have been at least 100 of the things needed and the brook itself was in the forest , isolated from any road.
Take a bow Tess Stobard, I'm now in my 50's but I remember you well through your efforts for us.
Disclaimer ... :-)
Even though this is a St. George's day tribute and all this occured in rural South Wales , Tess himself was a County Durham-er , when loads of Northern families moved to Wales to coal mine with us.
Tess Stobard , king of South Wales .........for a while.

St Georges Day - Giveaway, by barnsy on Apr 24, 2015 7:45:30 GMT 1, Great giveaway Grafter
Not really English as I live in Northern Ireland so this is more a UK thing.
As weather was so good yesterday my Mrs decided to spend the day in the garden on the sun lounger.
And as per a lot of UK people this morning she has woken up looking like a lobster.
Do they never learn.

St Georges Day - Giveaway, by Lroy on Apr 24, 2015 16:27:13 GMT 1, I worked at The Royal Albert hall ( there were casuals, as me, always nice with me - apart some F.cking froggy " ... but I did not care, I like angry English men and all the f.ck, and I was so happy to work in UK ) , I have been in skinheads concert and horse races, and what have marked me is is this mix between people: in all these places, no rich ror poor, only people, supporters and fans, United and wanting to share good times! No setters. Real ghirls and boys, very naturals and funny, loving to laugh - as me - and ... English : Love you people ;-) So, am I enough British to be named George ? ( they called me Jimmy there, I dunno why )

St Georges Day - Giveaway, by secondratehero on Apr 25, 2015 5:48:37 GMT 1, Not really english but I'd love to nominate only of my clients at the salon. Sue came in for the first time three years ago and I noticed right away that she was limping and using a cane. After normal hair conversation and a few hows your day going she opened up to me about her life.
She was recently divorced and was going through what seemed the be the hardest time of a life for anyone. You see her husband of 25 years left her one day, during legalities the courts asked her soon to be ex husband to stay living with her cause she was in school and had only budgeted enough money for her part of the bills/house payments before he decided to leave. After six months of still living separately together she was done with school and he moved out. A month later she found out that he had been taking her house payments and wasnt actually making any more payments on the house and she was being force to leave now as her house of 20 years was being foreclosed upon.
If that wasnt hard enough she was packing up her things after being forced to move out with her son and one of his friends. The friend was leaving and as he was pulling his car out from behind hers his foot slipped and he pinned her between the front of his car and the rear of hers when she was putting boxes into her trunk. She had to have her leg removed at the hip. After many surgeries and lots of therapy she was ready to recoup everything she had lost. Until her ex husband told said friend that if he filed for bankruptcy the insurance company couldnt get anything from him for her claims. So he did and she got nothing really.
With everything this amazing woman has been through and all the hardships she endured in the last handful of years she is always in amazing spirits and jokes openly about her leg and life. Shes an amazing inspiration and anytime a situation gets out of hand or my life slips a bit I think of her and her insane attitude and out look on life and instantly nothing can bring me down. I've met a lot of people in my line of work but no one has yet to inspire me more to always keep my chin up and look at the bright side of every situation.

St Georges Day - Giveaway, by Grafter on Apr 25, 2015 15:03:29 GMT 1, Must say..... I do like that one... Might have to make a special, one off, in gold leaf, special colourway, with 2 torn edges and 2 deckled edges, hand finished with tea leafs (or is it leaves?), and diamond dust (There's a blast from the past. Who remembers diamond dust and how special those were?), accompanied by a fully authenticated COA with the artists thumb print in his own blood.
