My Hirst for your Parla?, by afroken on Feb 24, 2008 12:30:10 GMT 1, My attempts to sell this on the forum haven't come to anything so, before I go to a gallery, I'm going to try to cut out the middle man and offer this up as a swap for a Jose Parla original. All swaps considered.
This print is considered to be the strongest of the 13 etchings in the 'World In A Spin' series. 'Throw It Around' from the same series sold at Sothebys last year for £12,000.
These etchings are unique in that Hirst did the plates himself by hand, unlike the Spot etchings which are produced mechanically. The plates were mounted on the spin machine and he used any tools he could find, from screwdrivers to battery acid, to make the markings. He then inscribed his name, the date and name of the piece in the plate - as he had to write backwards they look like the scribblings of a mad man! For reasons only known to him, the 68 'In The Groove' prints were hand signed using 2 pencils at the same time, so it has a double signature.
This piece is truly stunning in person and I welcome anyone potentially interested in doing a deal to come and view it in person before diving in.
Damien Hirst 'In The Groove' signed by the artist edition of 68 2002 etching on 350 gsm Hahnemuehle paper Float mounted in a white box frame 124 x 104cm, framed

My Hirst for your Parla?, by Philippe on Feb 24, 2008 23:08:34 GMT 1, I also like the piece and I thought it was interesting how the 2nd signature at the bottom strikes a strong resemblance to Warhol's signature. Best of luck with the swap Parla has some really nice work out their.

My Hirst for your Parla?, by carl on Feb 24, 2008 23:27:23 GMT 1, Thanks guys. It's a fantastic piece and I think it's well up to the swap that I'm hoping for. Carl, the only reason I would be interested in Banksy's would be that they would be easier to sell quickly to be able to buy a Parla. PM me with what you have in mind. No harm in talking.
You could always put the hirst in auction for maximum cash though.

My Hirst for your Parla?, by Pattycakes on Feb 26, 2008 13:03:48 GMT 1, Hi Afro, I know that at auction the kind of estimate you'd get would be £5,000-7,000 at best, the problem is in 2007 it was in an Olympia contemporary art sale, Sotheby's now only put prints into print sales and unfortunately the prices just don't match the contemporary sales results.

My Hirst for your Parla?, by afroken on Feb 26, 2008 13:41:23 GMT 1, Hey Printguru, I think you're spot on. I had it valued recently at around £8,500. Auctions are often not the best indicator for values of this kind of work - lets face it, it's not a hugely significant masterpiece.
What I like about most of Hirst's prints, unlike most artists out there, is that they are not reproductions. Even his spot etchings are not reproduced from unique works. Although this may not be true of the Eyestorm or White Cube prints as they are basically photographs.
What makes the spin etchings extra special, IMO, is the fact that they have been executed very specifically for the medium. So they stand alone as works of art in their own right. I think, as prints go, they will stand the test of time and occupy a significant little corner of Hirst's legacy.
Apart from that, I think it's a really fair swap for a Parla and I'd rather not go through the hassle of dealing with a gallery if I can cut to the chase.

My Hirst for your Parla?, by Pattycakes on Feb 26, 2008 15:38:36 GMT 1, I agree, they are for me along with the Last supper suite the best prints he's done. Frankly the eyestorm prints are little more than signed wrapping paper, I am constantly staggered at the prices people pay for them. I agree a swap is the best option. Though auction is sometimes a good way also because as with the one in 07 you sometimes get crazy prices.
