Why is a copy of Picasso’s work valued at so much?

If it’s by Picasso why is the term After used?

The phrase “after” Picasso (or “after” any other artist) for graphic works means that a skilled artisan created the image on the original plate based on some original work that was by created the artist. For example, Picasso created many oil paintings throughout his career. Some of these were reproduced later as lithographs on paper. These “after” works were approved by Picasso, but a skilled artisan created the original lithographic plate rather than Picasso himself.

There is no automatic correlation of “by” and “after” to “hand signed” and “hand numbered”. Some works “by” Picasso are hand signed and hand numbered, but some are not. Some works “after” Picasso are hand signed and hand numbered, but again some are not.

After Picasso is like After Basquiat quite common when artist name is huge...

Probably the older artists are more traditional and they actually differentiate between the prints that they hand pulled and the prints their assistants or print shop pulled...

No if the artist creates an original image for a print run it’s not after. If a printer/painter recreates an image from another original work by the artist then it’s after. 

I personally couldn’t do it, even at a bargain basement price. The thought of hanging something that he’d owned/chosen in the house that my child sleeps makes my skin crawl. It would be a hard pass from me.

More than happy to have a more detailed discussion elsewhere but I don’t want to detract from the seller’s efforts to find a buyer for this.

A short answer from me would be that I think it’s important to try and live with integrity where possible. I believe that this has social value but is also important for one’s own wellbeing and sense of self.

Would I bank with HSBC? I don’t bank with them and wouldn’t choose to but I think the issue extends far beyond HSBC. I believe that there’s a lot of hidden money laundering that is happening/has happened across a number of European banks. On the flip side, I do have environmental concerns but I have bought VWs and enjoy fast cars and travel. Hypocrisy? Possibly.

This one is signed, there is history for one sale for the green variant at 5000€, but handnumbered - this one is not. Also will be hard to identify the signature, as the black is common and generally unsigned.
