Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by searchandrescue on Feb 10, 2016 13:48:32 GMT 1, While we re at it, Is that the real mac coy? Saw that in the window of an estate agent Excuse my ignorance what's the triptych? ...their commonly ecclesiastic, but more recently a series or set of three images, usually related, sometimes not, displayed together. 'Ignorance' would have been if you didn't ask,...from a certain point of view.
Hieronymus Bosch - The Garden of Earthly Delights
Andy Warhol - Elvis
You can get Diptych's, consisting of two images.
Leonardo Da Vinci - Virgin of The Rocks
RYCA - Han Solo

Interesting. Is The Garden of Earthly Delights really a triptych, when the left and right panels are attached to the centre panel, and are painted on the reverse, to close and show a different image, as per alter pieces? I don't know the answer. Just pondering really.

Yes, that's me. But I don't know the answer. I just thought it was interesting (probably only to me!).

I recently watched the below documentary about a group of Dutch art historians, a conservator and a photographer trying to
a) document very thoroughly all of Bosch's surviving works and
b) assemble as many works as possible for an exhibition at Het Noordbrabants Museum in ’s-Hertogenbosch in celebration of the painter's 500th anniversary.
The film gives a fascinating insight into the politics of the museum world related to loans and granting access to studying artworks. I believe it is also discussed in the film whether The Garden of Earthly Delights (and similar works) really is a triptych, although I think there is no definitive answer to that question.
As it happens, the exhibition being prepared in the documentary opens on Saturday (13 February). The museum has reportedly managed to secure 20 of the 25 surviving panels by Bosch, which is very impressive indeed. More info can be found here.

Thanks Peter. I shall watch that. I think his work is stunning. I was aware of the show, and have a kind soul lined up to pick up the show catalogue for me.
