Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by fantasybrad on May 26, 2015 20:36:11 GMT 1, My understanding, after watching a few documentaries (including "How to sell a Banksy") and reading a few articles, is that Pest Control will only issue a Cert for pieces that were created with the intent of being sold... This eliminates the possibility of any stolen/removed graffiti/street pieces from being authenticated, and would eliminate gifts as well (if they're going to be 100% literal).

Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by Guaanie on May 26, 2015 20:36:43 GMT 1, Is this a gift by someone to you or a gift from Mr B himself to you? My understanding is that PC won't give a CoA for anything not originally meant for sale.

Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by Black Apple Art on May 26, 2015 20:44:26 GMT 1, If a Banksy Original was given as a gift yet Pest Control won't give it a COA is that strange? if the gift is an actual Authentic Banksy and they won't give it a Certificate of "Authenticity"?? What are forum members thoughts? and have similar situations come up with other artists (Warhol, Basquiat, etc., etc..) I'm not talking about a fake or a street stolen piece but a legit gift Banksy I mean a COA should just be for proving that it is authentic so not giving a COA for a Banksy that actually is authentic seems strange.. This is very common and I'd say a large portion of Banksy "gift" pieces don't have and will never get a COA. Most of the time we will never know the circumstances and reasoning but it is what it is. Know several amazing gift pieces that were refused COAs. It has caused a great deal of animosity for many but is what it is. IMO without COA, they are basically worthless on the market place and have value only to the original owner, which may have been the original intention of the gift in the first place.

Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by Mirus Gallery Poesia on May 26, 2015 21:08:33 GMT 1, Couldnt Provenance be with proper paperwork and proof of gift, I would imagine a COA would just be extra but with correct documentation it would be legitimized as an original. Have any Gifts with Provenance made it to auction houses?

Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by Unica on May 26, 2015 21:52:43 GMT 1, I've actually seen a few gift prints with COAs, so its not set in stone. It seems to be done on a case by case basis. But I agree with Black Apple that they are basically worthless or have very little value with out the COA, especially if its been denied one. I wouldn't invest a large some in to a Banksy piece with out it, that being said I may pay a couple of grand for the right piece if I liked it enough and believed it was done by Banksy. But certainly wouldn't be paying big money for anything as you'd struggle to sell it. There was a piece on ebay in the last year that looked like a Banksy Playboy of the month piece, the seller wanted a lot for it but without the COA no one was going to buy it. As for why some pieces get authenticated and others don't, well only the guys at PC know that.

Certainly dont think they are 'worthless'.
I think the ones that were authenticated were given as a form of payment rather then a gift. but im not entirely sure. I remember seeing a dedicated signed soupcan with coa.

Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by acme on May 27, 2015 0:01:35 GMT 1, The 2010 Banksy "Peace & Love Glitter" canvas was a gift and had a provenance according to the description text.
In the spring of 2010 the artist Banksy visited the city of San Francisco. He bombed his world famous graffiti in several spots around the city to coincide with the US release of his first independent film "exit through the gift shop". In the summer of that same year and while still in Northern California he combined two of his iconic street images "Little Black Boy" and "Peace & Love" into the unique original work you see on offer here. The work was gifted by the artist to a local who gave him access to couple of key rooftops in SF. This is verified by Pest Control Office and a letter of Provenance.

Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by andyroo0312 on May 27, 2015 0:31:18 GMT 1, I to have seen gift Banksys with PC but all of them were from the early days of PC when no one really gave a shit. Selling a gift is a bit left of centre really unless you are starving and homeless. You know the saying,, ' A gift is for ever not just for xmas,B/Days,Bar-Mitzvah,s and when helping Banksy" I think Banksy gift prints are his way of having a giggle sort of like when he released Trolleys at Santa,s Grotto in the Holy City. It must be frustrating for someone to have a gift print minus PC knowing that silly bit of paper could get you a new Audi4 and that new 200lt hot water tank you spotted at Homebase, can you hear the violin,s Fernando

Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by Black Apple Art on May 27, 2015 3:18:58 GMT 1, This was the craziest gift granted a COA I had ever seen. Was at Basel Miami last year and was actually gifted as a stencil on paper. The recipient then mounted the paper to a canvas and by pull of the gods got a COA. I actually didn't believe the Gallery and was shown a picture of it. Must have been a very close friend or did one hell of a favor.

Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by coller on May 27, 2015 6:20:17 GMT 1, I own a gift print with COA issued in the past two years; am not the original owner. From what I gathered it is completely on a case-by-case basis. That's all I'd like to go into on that one.
The 'gift was only intended for the recipient' thing may come into play when it seems like the person selling it doesn't need the money and is a bit greedy, but that's a complete guess.
Like others said, I wouldn't put too much money into a B without a COA. I love some of the ones I've seen, but you just know that it won't hold up - same philosophy behind selling the street pieces once they get denied Pest Control, more or less.

Banksy Original Question to Forum members.., by Unica on May 28, 2015 3:47:20 GMT 1, I saw the Barcode at Miami and the cutout, I wasn't too impressed by the cutout but loved the Barcode. I think the Barcode was from a time when Banksy stretched his own canvases on to wood frames that he put together. As you can see the lines aren't really clean. I heard he used to do make his own stretchers as he couldn't afford to buy them. As for the paste up, just looked odd being cut out and pasted on a canvas. Not something Banksy usually does, something just was off about it. I would love it if Banksy had spray painted the image on the canvas, just doesn't work appeal to me as is. The prices were nuts, I think this Barcode came up at auction a couple of years back and the hammer dropped at £80k if if recall correctly.

If you know the source and are closely related then clearly you can give some authenticity but ultimately if the body who authenticate works reject the piece it ain't worth f all

Nice! Potential commission? Only thing is half the lady's back is on the first square which would feel odd to paint. Maybe it's a large print. Looks great though.
