DFace – “Wasted Youth” @ CAC Malaga, by dreadnatty on Jun 1, 2015 21:08:31 GMT 1, DFace – “Wasted Youth” @ CAC Malaga « Arrested Motion
arrestedmotion.com/2015/06/upcoming-dface-wasted-youth-cac-malaga/
Towards the end of 2013, DFace (interviewed) and Shepard Fairey (featured) joined forces to paint two large murals (covered) on the side of a building in Malaga, Spain. Fast forward to the end the month and the city in southern Spain will see D return with his first museum exhibition at the CAC Malaga entitled Wasted Youth. On display starting June 27th will be fresh large scale paintings on canvas and installation pieces. Also, for the first time, the London-based street artist will be sharing a retrospective body of work as well as actual silkscreens and stencils used during the journey of his 15 year career.
He further states – “I spent the best part of my youth doing the exact opposite to what I was being told, it didn’t matter who was telling me, I wasn’t listening… what I was listening to was punk music, early hip hop and the words I read in the monthly hand me down Thrasher Mag. I can’t exactly tell you where or why this rebellious, anti-establishment streak comes from, all I can tell you is that it’s a streak that runs deep to my core, like with a felled tree, you can count the rings to tell it’s age, with me its like bacon, slice me open and you’ll be able to count all those rebellious streaks! Whenever I wasn’t at school (and most times when I was) I was doodling, day dreaming and working out ways to skate more.
If like me you believe your life is predetermined, that the path finds you, instead of you finding it and that your life is mapped out in front of you, you can either look for it, ignore it or just straight miss it, the signifiers are there, it just might not be in linear form, a simple path or equation, that the dots can be connected, they may just be years apart, see the things I embraced as a child and teenager have ultimately shaped me as an adult, as such calling my first museum show ‘Wasted Youth’ would seem almost logical, it summarises the elements that connect my work and the elements that connect me to my work. The fragility of life, the certainty (by my school and parents) that I was ‘wasting my youth’ by continuing to do these pointless and degenerate activities, it seems now perfectly ironic that I should call my first solo museum show ‘Wasted Youth’, a middle finger salute to all those teachers that believed following a tired curriculum was more important than following your heart and passion.”
The show will be on view thru September 27th and will run alongside a solo from Shepard Fairey (more on this later).

I'm really glad he used a lot of his older imagery for this one. The DSTQ's and pop tarts are amazing!

DFace – “Wasted Youth” @ CAC Malaga, by Howard Johnson on Jun 29, 2015 0:46:24 GMT 1, As much as I love his art I agree that his prices are not in line with the market. At the show last year in Beverley hills some nice unique queens on paper were $3k and canvas ones were $10k. Jump to the recent LA show and the HPMs are $12k and canvases (although admittedly much bigger and new images) were $30k. Now we have this show with the lowest prices being around $30k and no smaller pieces or multiples.
To be fair I believe he pretty much sold out the two LA shows so more power to him, but in my experience these prices don't hold up in the aftermarket. I recently sold a nice big multiple on aluminum and had to take a loss on the source price of $3k, and the two pieces on wood that sold in the past couple months on ebay didn't even break $2k. I guess these aren't an indication of how his iconic originals would do at auction, but his current pricing holds little room for investment value in my opinion.

More power to him for reaching this level.

DFace – “Wasted Youth” @ CAC Malaga, by leebs on Jun 29, 2015 21:26:27 GMT 1, Not sure how being a museum show makes much of a difference other than museum shows all of the work isn't normally for sale.. Im a big D*face fan but think his prices are pretty crazy given he doesnt have much of a secondary market. I also think its a bit off reusing some of his more successful older pieces and reselling them at 10x the price

I also think its a bit off reusing some of his more successful older pieces and reselling them at 10x the price To be fair, hes only used the Pop Tart image on the original canvas, the small plexiglass edition, and the screenprint. That being said, the DSTQ image has been done to death at this point.
-Dog Save The Queen - 250 -Canis Servo - 80 -Union Jack on paper - 16 -Union Jack on Canvas - 12 -HRH - 70 -HRH Canvas - 7 -HRH burned edition - 7
Thats not even counting the various other mixed media editions released throughout the years. As an educated buyer it seems silly to drop the kind of money hes asking on the new canvas edition when there are so many other variations on this image in circulation. I honestly do wish him the best, and theres always the secondary market for us collectors who cant afford these pieces at source.

DFace – “Wasted Youth” @ CAC Malaga, by leebs on Jun 30, 2015 8:02:24 GMT 1, It just seems like he's done a retrospective of his work like any other museum show but instead of gathering all of the work he remade it and slapped a huge price tag on them. In regards to his older work surely its not the volume that's already out there but the fact that he is reusing the images? I understand he has moved on to Lichtensteinesque work so would have been hard to show progression maybe they shouldn't have been included? It just strikes of being very avaricious to me.

i think you'll find he has been doing this type / kind / vein of work for a considerable time.
as for the pricing ? well ... canvas works have been quite high since 2008.
I'm sure there is irony in a lot of what he has done and what people think he has done, which lends itself to ... humour - rather than avarice... given he owns/runs SS.
