Banksy Kate Moss Print, by almoran on Jan 17, 2008 22:29:08 GMT 1, I think that we should focus on what we actually like to see in our homes and live with day to day. The rest will work itself out. If I like a painting and it speaks to me then I'm not too worried about "picking a lottery ticket" with my purchase. I wouldn't say that the thought doesn't cross my mind when making purchases. At the very least, I'd like to think that if I spend $1 today then that particular piece will be worth at least $1 ten years from now. If it gains in value then I consider that icing on the cake. What does scare me is buying into some sort of hype and spending 15K+ on something that I get caught up in at the moment and then realize that I'm not too crazy about after living with it for a few months.

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by slowmo on Jan 17, 2008 22:49:20 GMT 1, i dont think there can be an arguement to say that the recent artists are better than their peers, picasso et al will always have the advantage that they were the originators of their style, warhol & even ron english are all too apparent in banksy's work for him to claim it as his own , picasso& bacon in neates, twombley & pollock in parla's, they are however more relevant to this generation than their predecessors, which is probably where the debate arises, as dynamic & exciting as this genre of art is, it still has a way to go (imo) before it stands alone against the cream of the artworld.
Go to the Picasso museum in Barcelona and you'll see that most young artists learn by originally emulating their inspirations, Picasso was heavily influenced by the French artists as a young man, found his stride a little later.
Good post rudecopper, here's to these young guys development, they have literally only just begun their journeys.

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by Cocteau 101 on Jan 17, 2008 23:23:25 GMT 1, This is the best thread we've had for ages and not just because I've been able to blab on and on about my Pollock / Parla comparison obsession ;D. But great to hear what we all think about influences etc. ;D
Lets keep it going it makes a change from some of the day to day forum petty arguements.

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by top on Jan 17, 2008 23:36:59 GMT 1, I'm not learned enough to comment on the artists..that would be folly..
I would really like to see Parla's work in the flesh, see what gives.
Unfortunately, I doubt I would ever be in a financial position to purchase one!
..mmm nor a Kate!!
Nice discussion people, I will be following up on what has been posted here and draw my own conclusions. Would love to make the trip to Italy..but alas..

That's really where Parla's work shines. Once you see it up close and feel it you begin to appreciate the amount of work it takes to get the paintings so textured. It gives the work so much more depth. Your eye automatically gravitates to the lines but underneath the calligraphy there's a whole other world to explore in them. I'm going to post some pics tomorrow of one of my Parla's with some macro shot so you can see what I'm talking about.

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by ricosg11 on Jan 18, 2008 0:21:51 GMT 1, Jose's favorite part of his paintings are the small flecks of paint that fly out of the pens when he is writing the calig. Never noticed them until he pointed them out. Like little flecks of raw energy and emotion. There is a lot more than meets the eye to his work.

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by Rude Copper on Jan 18, 2008 0:36:52 GMT 1, with adam neate, it seems people just dont appreciate the work fully until they see it, the minute they do, they can't stop enthusing about what a fantastic artist he is, the same is true about parla's work, i was literally dumbstruck when i saw his work, you just cant appreciate the depth of his work till you see it, the calligraphy, the colours, the layering, the attention to detail, its almost too much to take in. dont take my word for it tho, get a ยฃ0.99 ryanair flight to genoa & see for yourself

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by slowmo on Jan 18, 2008 9:47:15 GMT 1, Would it be fair to say that the Parla work at Small medium and large were not up to his usual standard? This was the Parla work I saw and I was actually quite disappointed at how matt they looked, from the sounds of things, I need to see more of them.

I agree totally with you here,I am a big fan of Jose,s and was looking to buy,but the three canvases in the show just did not come up to the level of the work in "Pirate Utopia,s"..IMO.

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by uksnowman on Jan 18, 2008 16:54:26 GMT 1, Wish we could predict those who will be remembered by future generations as the geniuses of their time...our future families would be minted. But will it be Hirst or Emin or Turk or Banksy or Neate or Parla or Choe ....I could go on all night!!
Emin!? I bloomin hope not
Not sure who said it before, maybe almoran, that there is not a massive amount of emotion in a lot of the current street artists work (at least not for me but maybe I'm not looking in the right way). Many of them have strong messages and great style of course.
Having said that, until I've seen a Parla in the flesh I can't judge but I can see how his work could be looked at for hours without boring me, or moving in a different way. Whereas some other artists I would say give me a quick fix rather than a marvelling fixation.
Anyway, it's all personal right

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by almoran on Jan 18, 2008 17:12:07 GMT 1, Here's the pics I promised yesterday. This painting is titled "Brothers Back 2 Back". It was done in 2006. Measures 6 feet x 6 feet mixed media on canvas. The painting tells the story of Parla and his brother growing up in the 80's in Miami. All of the writing are stories from his memories of those days. The writing on the first few layers are his earlier memories which are a bit cloudy. Some of the details have been forgotten with time. This is illustrated by the darker spots within the writing. These "holes" are meant to symbolize the incomplete memories.
The writing on each subsequent layer becomes more prominent as the stories become clearer to him. The top layer are stories which he remembers with certainty. They represent the experiences which are still vivid in his memory. It's impossible to tell here (or in person) but the whole canvas is lined with posters of a documentary film named Cocaine Cowboys (on the very first layer). This documentary is about the drug days in Miami during the 80's Miami Vice days. He put the posters in there to symbolize that he was unaware of all of the murders and drug dealing going on in his innocent childhood while he and his brother were growing up in Miami and writing on walls and getting into trouble. The same way we are unaware that the posters are there in this painting.
Here's the painting along with some macro shots of it. You can see the depth of the piece within the macros.

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by ruat caelum on Jun 20, 2008 21:05:30 GMT 1, Are those gas bills getting tricky to pay? Is the price of rice becoming a bit extortionate? Have you got a Banksy 'Kate', original colourway (ed. of 50), in mint condition, with all the paperwork?
If you answered yes to all three questions, or at least to the last one, then I know someone waiting around with ยฃ58,000 who'd like to meet you.
Send me a personal message with your details and I'll put the two of you in touch.

I'm sure there are plenty of folks here with that kind of - tidal wave.
same kind of folks who contacted the bank manager who other week who was selling cwsb etc...
me ? I've got cost and an expression similar to that of some who's just been splashed by a car on a rainy night in glesga - walking home at 5am.. - many of them
good luck all the same...
