Banksy Kate Moss Print, by medicineman on Jan 16, 2008 14:15:49 GMT 1, To me... He may have a following but if an artist cannot progress past scribbling/writing illegible script...He is doomed. You could say OOhh EERrr...well look at Banksy. He cant progress past stencils. Well ok yes in some ways you are right. But each sten carries a hammer blow of thought/interpritation. How much can you read into a Parla scribble....mmm thought so

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by medicineman on Jan 16, 2008 14:17:36 GMT 1, Jose Parla, superb artist, his work in my humble opinion will evolve and get even better as he finds new depths within himself, as someone else has said already the resemblance between Parla and Pollack is quite striking, the press that pollack first recieved wasnt very flattering but he went from strength to strength. A kate for the right parla, as much as I love the kate image, there would be no contest. here is one of my favorite parla's thats cocteau's, or at least it looks like his, i used to own a kate, & for sure, its a beautiful print, but after seeing the elms show, i would go for one of the parla's, the depth in some of the big pieces, were genuinely amazing, the kind of work you could look at for days & never tire of, full of energy & verve.
My 5yr old Daughter could do this ! !

Looks a sparkler photograph on a cheap camera on Bulb Mode

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by Cocteau 101 on Jan 16, 2008 14:45:59 GMT 1, Again watch the Love and Death Pollock documentary I have suggested to see the reaction to Pollocks work people sending Life magazine letters saying here ia a piece done by my son age 7 called No5 etc etc, it's quite amusing really - much like medicineman's to Parla so I can understand where he is coming from. It's all down to opinions . Only time will tell but I think Parla will be big big league in the contemporary art scene in years to come.

guess that all depends on how hard you are willing to work to understand a piece. Some people get a lot more out of art when its meanings arent spoonfed or literal. For me a challenging piece like a Parla is something I can interpet for an eternity. To me thats more attractive than a Banksy.

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by ABC on Jan 16, 2008 17:22:24 GMT 1, I too think Parla's work has more to it than just "scribble" as some are putting it.
I believe it comes down to how much you respect art in general.
Rather than just being press-ganged into liking street/urban art, people that have not, should get themselves out and compare the broader spectrum available for free. For me (UK) the Tate, National Gallery etc offer a great deal to compare. It's weird, I thought I disliked Salvador Daili's work for years until last week when I saw his exhibition and viewed the works in the flesh.
A computer screen is no substitute for the impact of an original in the flesh, If people are judging artists work when they have never seen it in the flesh before then IMO they have no argument.
PS This is not directed at anyone, I'm just waffling as usual.

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by Cocteau 101 on Jan 16, 2008 20:47:06 GMT 1, ABC totally agree that is why I see the line from Pollock to Parla, everything comes from somewhere even indirectly. In the Sunday Times magazine this week there is an 3 or 4 page article on the "previously hidden Russian art collection", the collection includes several well know major artists. There is a particular photograph of a piece that could have been painted by a well known contemporary/urban artidt of the day. You'll know the picture when you see it and also the urban artist that I'm referring to. Again a line/link/ clearly visible influenece in my opinion. Lets see who can get the picture and the two artists first.

LOL

I agree, they can be compared in some instances, but you could also say the same about Warhol and Banksy, Pollock and Parla In some cases. What is much harder to do Is say who is better technically, the image is easy, that comes down to personnel choice IMO. For me the newer artists have a long way to go for acclaiming they are better.

I thought I would never see the day that Ron English gets the respect he deserves seems that day isn't that far away now

Banksy Kate Moss Print, by Cocteau 101 on Jan 17, 2008 19:43:54 GMT 1, Agree with the sentiments Rudecopper I would only add that the "cream of the artworld grows as the years pass by" I'm sure are kids will have their own artists that they will go on about like we all do now. The day will come when one of them is saying "do you think he was influened by Parla / Neate etc". I'm sure of it. Because we are dealing with artists in the here and now it is difficult in a way to imagine that they could become great, but I'm sure some will.
