Looking after canvases when hung, by Gangsta Nola on Jul 6, 2015 20:35:01 GMT 1, Hi all
Especially aimed at all the longterm collectors and enthusiasts on the forum. Looking for guidance on the above. I have hung a number of canvases but am worried that they will accumulate dust/dirt etc.etc. I'm looking to keep them for the longterm, but am worried that over time if they increase in price, the condition may be affected and as everyone here seems to agree 'condition is most important'. Is there any words of wisdom as to how to best keep them in condition ?
Many thanks in advance
GN

Looking after canvases when hung, by Gard on Jul 6, 2015 20:49:25 GMT 1, So the best way to look after your art is to take it down from your wall, get it professionally packed and store it. If you don't want to do that just keep it out of sunlight and it will be fine.

Looking after canvases when hung, by Liverpool ste123 on Jul 6, 2015 20:52:57 GMT 1, I thought about getting a Perspex frame for mine. Seals the canvases basically...
Unsure if anyone has done that & have a couple of pics for inspiration?

Looking after canvases when hung, by 11 on Jul 6, 2015 21:04:15 GMT 1, I had these done recently - I didn't actually appreciate how heavy Perspex is. I had a clear back put in as well as the thinking is to get various bits of flock or suitably kitsch wall paper to place behind as a border so to speak....
But I am well pleased with the finish and the 'floaty' look it gives them

Looking after canvases when hung, by .dappy on Jul 6, 2015 21:09:40 GMT 1, I have a couple of bits in perspex. Not canvases but all originals. Perspex is also good as it stops ~c97% UV light. Each of them is literally within the perspex box except the Penny which was mounted on/within the black panel first.
Wooden cupboard door on right - c215
Marble on right - c215
Wood panel - Penny

It's a pricey option - for a 60 x 65 x 7 cm (the Borf) was in the region of £270. I don't know if that's good or bad as it was the first time I had used a Perspex box but I am well pleased with the finish.
I'm not sure what best practice is - obviously there are paintings that are 100's of years old that have been displayed without glass but wonder if it's more a consideration of the materials used ie. Oils v acrylics
I have another piece in a simple tray frame and no glass. I keep it away from sunlight but am of the view that if hung correctly that the tray frame and the slight angle it hangs at minimises any dust getting on it

Looking after canvases when hung, by Gangsta Nola on Jul 6, 2015 21:34:41 GMT 1, Thanks 11
Tray frames might be the way forward. Got a few white canvases, which'll attract the dust like flies on sh@% ! I was trying not to need to be dusting the tops every other day !!

Looking after canvases when hung, by .dappy on Jul 6, 2015 21:41:35 GMT 1, All of mine were carried out by MFM, ask him for a cost - whatever you buy framing always comes into it and helps if you buy what you like ...
... I look at the long term and would I enjoy the piece on my walls for a number of years? and look at the cost that way ... its another reason why I pay the extra for museum glass ... you have to save for tbe pennies and that is why you have not seen much new from me

Be careful with museum glass - if you are happy with your reflection then stick with it - once you try a bit of that non-reflective you won't ever go back as the difference is stunning.... but the price step is a smack on the shin
MFM lured me in with his Museum Glass upgrade offer - now I can't have anything else, but is worth every penny really
Except for having to put up with the bastards that go 'is there glass in this' just before smearing greasy fingerprints across it....and if you try and pre-empt it by telling them they still touch it in disbelief anyway!.

Looking after canvases when hung, by Lroy on Jul 6, 2015 22:26:20 GMT 1, Funny : canvas have to be on the walls, not in a cardboard or under the bed .. Perplex look a bit too much too, you don't feel the soul, the matter of the painting. The only canvas I know under perpex is Mona Lisa or some pieces in certain museums... I've never seen a Delacroix, a Van Gogh ( yes maybe one ) under perpex. As for Banksy 's outside murals, perpex is to avoid vandalism or destruction by humans. I don't think that your guests in your home will come with podcast or scissors and will begin to write or to cut..:-) It makes me remember this story told by my friend and neighbor in Paris then, Gisele Freund who has taken a lot of photos of great painters , writers etc... The fear of collectors and people when they invited for dinner Bonnard, was that the painter will make retouching and finitions on his own paintings nailed on the walls of the hosts ( often they had hidden the canvas before his venue ) : in fact Bonnard had always a belt with little jars full of painting and he could never resist to make retouching with his brush when he saw one of his painting on a wall ! Ahah .. What a passion et man ! What could he think about. Perpex? Anyway, kunstrazen ( with all the respect ) is far from classical masterpieces and I understand too that collectors want to keep it safe or longer ... But in the other side , better put the canvas in z safe and wait for value !.. It is the same for LP or rare comics : do I have to listen them or read them or to put them already in antacid paper and in the cupboard ? I think ( it s just my opinion ) that art must live ( don't think always to money and value ) and to be out and not stay in a coffin as a dead thing. Anyway, I know some great people making restoration of canvas or masterpiece, dust is nothing and easy to clean. The only thing that people making restoration hates to do is acrylic : even under perps exit not, acrylic don't resist to the time and you can take it of a canvas as a plastic film on a skin. With oil, no. Anyway in hundred of years, art will be resist to modernity , science, wars, fire etc etc... Not sure. Pessimistic ending. :-)
