Jeff Koons ๐บ๐ธ Balloon Dog โข Sculpture โข Art For Sale, by gmidd on May 18, 2018 14:26:25 GMT 1, You know, I like them, but the fact he's raking in ยฃ30m from this edition makes me feel a little a little uneasy
Well, in all fairness, it says the edition is from 1998, so my guess is that the original price wasn't $10k each. Sounds like they're just releasing 100 that they held back. Still crazy money though for a vase that looks like a dog.

Jeff Koons ๐บ๐ธ Balloon Dog โข Sculpture โข Art For Sale, by jluhiex on Jan 23, 2019 21:45:30 GMT 1, This was for the Hillary Action Fund. Donate $50k usd and get this print. Considering what a blue chipper Koons is the markup isn't ridiculously grotesque. Edition of 40 as most people tend to go for Koons sculptures (ie balloon dog plates etc).
His trajectory has been a bit stagnant lately similar to Hirst. They actually both fired a ton of assistants so we'll see where he goes. Hirst seems to be re-inventing himself with his new heni editions and spot prints...Koons has his LV collaborations etc.

Jeff Koons ๐บ๐ธ Balloon Dog โข Sculpture โข Art For Sale, by Tommy Tucker on Jan 23, 2019 23:31:33 GMT 1, Hey everyone,
Yes I have been delving into the system here and much like the Kaws - The News and David Hockney pieces this seems to have been forgotten. Came across it and thought I would let you guys know. I do work for a gallery and only post what I think is good artwork at fair prices.
This was indeed for the Hillary Clinton Fundraiser but the Printer Proofs or Artist Proof weren't sold at this event. Just the main editions.

But would it be fair to argue that, for a gallerist, it's a lose-scenario either way?

Yah I was 50/50 about the Brainwash but like it or not we live in a world where he is a hugely popular artist. As a gallery the price for the works we have are very good compared to NYC and London so thought I'd share.
Genuine or facetious is your call. I will post what I think is worthy and if the UAA Gods feel otherwise then I will bow to their good graces.

Cheers for your reply. The good-natured, non-defensive tone was appreciated as well.
No disagreement about Mr Brainwash being popular.
I would go further by stating he's an effective gateway artist, as previously mentioned here. In my view, that's his most important role. He releases colourful, optimistic, easily-digestible paintings and prints, largely appealing to people who know little about art. At the same time, the work's accessibility increases its potential as a catalyst for novice enthusiasts to take a broader interest in art, artists and collecting.
__________
My original point, however, is that Mr Brainwash isn't by any reasonable measure a "good" artist.
Applying various criteria used by the art world for judging quality, there's a compelling case to be made that Mr Brainwash is in fact a bad artist. His output ticks pretty much all the 'CON' boxes: derivative, formulaic, schmaltzy, technically poor, and conceptually vacuous. One could describe it as profoundly superficial. Or as regressive, lowest-common-denominator art.
While not a big deal if originals were being sold for low three-figure sums, this does become a concern at four or five-figure levels.
__________
From your comments, it doesn't seem like Mr Brainwash paintings are offered because your gallery considers him talented either. Instead, it looks as if people are being encouraged to acquire the work simply because (i) the artist is currently popular (at least among a certain demographic of collectors); and (ii) your prices are apparently competitive. Query whether these are the bases for what you describe as "worthy".
I do understand the curatorial compromises which are sometimes necessary when having to deal with mundane issues like business overheads.
At the same time, there's the risk of credibility loss when a gallery associates itself with bad art and (if you'll forgive the caricature) suggests to clients that they, "Buy it because other people are buying it."
That is the foundation for art-market bubbles. It's potentially also a case of the sighted leading the blind โ knowingly down the wrong path.
