Banksy authentic street art?, by huffgarr on Sept 14, 2015 16:31:20 GMT 1, Hi All,
First time posting here so hopefully got this in the right section. This is probably more of a rhetorical question of authenticity given the location, but I thought that I'd throw it up on this thread and just see what the responses are to it. My familiarity with his art is pretty limited.
I came across a "Banksy" image on the back of a construction sign while driving to and from work in southern CA. It is an image of a rat and a jackhammer. Obviously, I realize he is based out of the UK, which makes this a lot less likely to be authentic, but is there an easy way to spot fake street art posing as the original artist?
Take a look at the link below and let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

In the case of your pic, the over spray ( the black line below the stencil ) is an obvious giveaway that it's fake.
There are plenty of other ways, but that's the most obvious.
Bear in mind that a lot of the time people aren't necessarily trying to fake a Banksy, they just like the image enough to buy a stencil off ebay and go and pretend they're Banksy. No harm in that.
*Edit: I like those bird pics on your flickr site. Very colourful.

Banksy has been in LA many times but don't plan on retiring with this.

I assumed the odds of it being fake pretty high, but given my inexperience I figured it would be best to ask.
Someone mentioned that the documentary "Exit Through The Gift Shop" is a good one to watch that sounds like it discusses a little bit about that very topic of authenticity behind art.
And thanks for the compliment on the pics. I'm a wildlife biologist and took those pics while traveling in Colombia.
Thanks for the reply!
