Exhibitions are they still Relevant today?, by Mirus Gallery Poesia on Sept 24, 2015 2:20:17 GMT 1, Having curated multiple exhibitions, but also as an artist exhibiting in multiple exhibitions internationally I think its a good topic to address and get some thoughts on the subject. I bring this up as there is a very clear change in peoples thoughts on this and how artists and collectors buy and sell work in this new instagram era. I can argue on both sides of this conversations as an artist and gallerist, but I dont think I know the real answer. I can say that I think from what I am seeing from support of collectors that exhibitions are not a priority compared to say 3-5 years ago. Commissions are becoming more prevalent and exhibitions are a place to window shop for something you can buy direct from the artist if you feel the need.
I think the new era is great for collectors and artists in many ways, yet in the long term will this easy access create a vacuum effect for real material and important work. Do we digest paintings like we digest singles in music or mixtapes now, is the idea of a proper full length album or proper exhibition where the artist works 6-12 months on going to be replaced by a barrage of commissioned work with no cohesive narrative? I dont know the answer to this but as brick and mortar businesses will start to shut down and other than online galleries who peddle work made for a different purpose than to exhibit its going to be interesting to watch. I am also referencing our particular genre as most higher end galleries seem to big to fail and the elite artists are hardly reachable on social media compared to our artists.
Many collectors are knowledgeable and seem to always be looking for a deal while others see the gallery is a true middle man without adding anything to the conversation. I see curators and galleries as a necessary evil in some cases, yet when you really find one that brings something to the conversation and an artists is given an opportunity to create something special it will be sad to see them also have to shutdown due to changing paradigms. Is instagram and the collector as a curator enough to validate an artists worth? How will the future look where there is no curator to distinguish between similar artists, can you trust yourself to know enough because you have seen a mural or two from an artist. What will be the measure of an artist without an exhibition?

Exhibitions are they still Relevant today?, by My Name is Frank on Sept 24, 2015 7:51:07 GMT 1, Interesting view point, I certainly hope not. As you say exhibitions allow artists to work on their own themes over a long period, if commissions are to supercede this, then like music you will be left with very little imagination beyond the main stream media outlets for art
