Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by Flashback on Nov 29, 2017 23:23:38 GMT 1, I watched the Basquiat Rage to riches documentary last night.
On some of his paintings he painted 'Not for sale' as he was annoyed about some of the people buying his pieces who hounded him and who were cashing in.
Sure these would've got the same treatment.

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by Howard Johnson on Nov 30, 2017 7:19:53 GMT 1, Howard Johnson this is the 3rd posthumous release in 3 years by the Basquiat foundation, and overall they've published 14 individual repro prints in the past 15. They are all beautifully printed that much is true, but are basically nothing more than a cash in. This isn't unique to Basquiat Heni have produced repros or Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Giacometti paintings all with the blessings of the foundations - I think it's a real shame and I suspect all of these artists are positively rolling in their respective graves at the thought of the crap being made in their name. Warhol he'd have loved it though!
Yeah I remember the recent ones, but had no idea they had Been churning these out during the bush administration? Let me guess; the current price points are based on the market value of the older ones? It's a clever long con.
Soooooo anyone interested in splitting a set...

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by Pattycakes on Nov 30, 2017 8:58:31 GMT 1, Yes all those older ones like Ernok Rinso, Cabeza, Charles the Ist, Rome Pays Off, Per Capita etc were done in 2001 and 2005 in two sets of 4. They were authorised by Gerrard Basquiat when he administered the estate. They are signed by him. Off the top of my head I don't recall who published them, but it wasn't Pace. They make upwards of $45,000 at auction each! Which makes the new ones "value for money" if such a thing is possible. Oh the horror the horror.

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by daveart on Nov 30, 2017 17:30:30 GMT 1, I bought one of the original estate prints many years ago - Cabeza - its one of my more painful art experiences . i bought it because it was bad ass basquiat. it was huge - it forced you to look at it. My gallery friend in NYC told me not to buy it because it was just ' a fancy poster' and they wouldnt even carry something like that in their gallery.. i think i paid 7K for it with framing or something like that. i sold it on a few years later - my wife didnt love it - and the comments from galleries about it being 'just a fancy poster' really stung a bit - i listened to other people and that eroded my enjoyment of something that i really did like for what it was.. a Basquiat - in my house and still, i sold it. Now, 10 years later - the gallery that soured me on it pumps these things like no tomorrow at 45k , 50K, 60K an impression.. The art world is a tough thing. i am just rambling at this point but i guess the point is - if you like it - its as close as you are going to get to a basquiat in your house so go for it and enjoy it. with the trend i think we have to assume the estate will milk this cow every few years until they run out of steam.. and a whole generation of art collectors will never know that these werent always in the market and they wont much care.. doesnt make it right. just is what it is..

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by viz on Nov 30, 2017 18:07:55 GMT 1, ... i am just rambling at this point but i guess the point is - if you like it - its as close as you are going to get to a basquiat in your house so go for it and enjoy it. ... that's not true.
in fact what amazes me the most is how an original print, signed and from a much smaller edition:
www.phillips.com/detail/JEAN-MICHEL-BASQUIAT/NY030114/39
could be auctioned for much less than the postumous reproduction of (i guess) a drawing in a much larger edition:
www.phillips.com/detail/AFTER-JEAN-MICHEL-BASQUIAT/NY030114/38
on the same day, in the same auction.
...and 5 (!!!!) original prints, also in this case from a smaller edition still for much less a few months before... www.phillips.com/detail/JEAN-MICHEL-BASQUIAT/UK030213/36
UNBELIEVABLE
they even dare printing "artist's proofs"...

100% agree. However, people buying a basquiat want an image that screams "basquiat!" and the medical drawings are not as well known and very sparse in composition when compared to his iconic paintings. To my knowledge, these type of images were the only ones he ever did as multiples which left fans with few options. I bought a legit basquiat poster a while back, and am glad to own something he approved and designed. Anyone know any other good ephemera he produced for those of us who give a sh*t about collecting authentic artwork??

the point is, if you want to own an original piece of art by Bansquiat, there they are. If you want a nice picture, 50k$ seems quite a lot to me, but even that is definetely just point of view.

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by Art commonsewer on Dec 1, 2017 5:15:41 GMT 1, I bought a set too. The one thing that bothered me was that although it did sell out they decided not to do tiered pricing that announced the day before... all the sets sold at 50k. Not like them to leave money on the table so demand might have been less than expected or people declined once the price went up??
I like that these are smaller prints because of my limited wall space. I may be interested in selling one or two out of the set if anyone is interested.

People who can afford to pay 50K for these don't need the money and I can't see their value. Similar to the unsigned editions knocked out after Dali died by a few cronies working together, sold to rich professionals under the guise of investments by greedy galleries and we all know what happened to those editions.

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by daveart on Dec 1, 2017 15:33:43 GMT 1, as always - comes down to personal taste. at the buy in price i had on the cabeza 10 years ago i would buy that again all day long over these pieces. I suppose it is a bit like people not buying the warhol shoes and other illustrations in favor of the more colorful more 'warhol' pieces in the style that made him famous.
i guess what i was really trying to illustrate was that when the first estate prints came out galleries and experts in the know shunned them at far lower prices. now - at far higher prices - galleries are pumping them and lining up to buy new ones.

Far be it from me to discuss people tastes and the way they spend their money.
My comment was just referred to possibility to own an "original" piece of art by Bansquiat at the same (or even less) cost of one of these (high quality, limited) reproductions, that' s why I quoted just that part of the message.
...but in my very personal opinion they are just two completely different "things".
I cannot think of any other artist whose postumous and not original works are so sought after.
I might be wrong but no museum, or at least not one of the major ones, would collect these reproductions, whereas many of them own the prints from the leonardo portfolio.
That said, I'm sure this is a good investment (at least in the short-medium term), the images are nice (maybe even nicer than the ones of some original prints) and for sure the quality is super super high.
PS: except for the monetary value (either as cost or as investment), just from an artistic point of view, what's the difference with these high quality prints licensed by the estate?

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by daveart on Dec 1, 2017 19:41:04 GMT 1, shortened this up.. I think you are absolutely correct on the true artistic value. i have no idea why the first editions zoomed from a few thousands of dollers to 40-50K usd.. makes no sense to me and had i though/knew it would happened i obviously wouldnt have sold mine!
on these prints -- i assume they are open edition. and .. wait for it .. they aren't signed on the back by the father of the artist. :/

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by Art commonsewer on Dec 5, 2017 8:40:03 GMT 1, I wonder if the 4 new prints that were released last week will do better in resale than this edition did. I believe the smaller format (20x30) of the new ones will have a bigger buyer pool in the future at the same price... not everyone has the space to put such a big piece of art on their wall and the color will help. Time will tell.

Doesn’t seem like it was for the art.

Jean-Michel Basquiat 🇺🇸 Brooklyn, New York • Graffiti Art , by daveart on Dec 27, 2017 23:33:15 GMT 1, getting sad that there are more posts on these sales threads about the 'why' and 'second guessing motives' than actually thinking and considering the art for sale.
These were sold as a set. it is not uncommon or unreasonable to only want to keep two of the four and it seems the seller was as open about that effort. While you guys were busy bitching about it appears someone actually bought something and will enjoy it for what it is.

You don't think it's odd to randomly pick 2/4 prints of a set to put on a wall. "Oh I love them all equally so this was the best way for me to handle that." Pointing out oddities is I'm most people's nature.
Anyway would love to see all of them framed once up

Sorry but this is nonsense.
Someone wants to randomly keep 2/4 without caring which two. Lol. Let me guess the other two will be up soon. He clearly doesn’t care about any of the 4.
