Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Nov 10, 2019 21:27:35 GMT 1, Basquait I havenโt seen and exhibition of, hopefully a lot of his works come over to Australia soon. I have through the love of art enjoyed looking back (online and documentaries) at the artists in New York in the 80โs, special times and would have been great to be part of that.
In terms of being blown away by art emotionally, went to a large Francis bacon exhibition in Sydney a few years back. Amazing work, emotionally grabs hold of you.
Will Banksyโs be worth many millions like basquait? Who cares..I think the work speaks for itself, no other artist attempts the stunts and shows across all mediums like he does and mostly for free or little cost (which is donated to charity). Heโs on his own in that respect and he will be gaining more and more fans.

Thats part of the brand , the stunts Generates so much interest Over the years few months after a stunt usually a major auction, all hand in hand
With out the shows , the stunts etc , the art would atill be popular but not as much ad it is now

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by campfire headphase on Nov 18, 2019 5:42:47 GMT 1, Very different artists so itโs hard to draw a through line. Banksy has a huge, pedestrian appeal. Many people like it. Then again, many people like Justin Bieber. Thatโs all and well, but his music is still shit. Banksy has come far by not playing the rules. Not easy to do. Still, at the end of the day, Basquiat makes Banksy look like paste. Worlds above Banksy.

Jean-Michel Basquiat ๐บ๐ธ Brooklyn, New York โข Graffiti Art , by moron on Nov 22, 2019 0:16:24 GMT 1, Banksy the brand and name has been forced onto people via the British media to begin with in a similar way that Famian Hurt and his dead fish was forced onto the British public.
Basquait was an enigma from day one. He was real and his art, paintings he left part of his soul in them.
Banksy is hype, a gimmick, simple witticisms sprayed on walls and heavily promoted. Sure this business plan generates curiosity and the public buy into the paid for media promotion. The flippers jump on the bandwagon and hate any contradiction of Banksy's cult leader like status as they fear a miscavige of justice and their investment portfolio going down not up.
If it only comes down to money it shows that people will believe anything and Banksy is parallel to Basquiat. In reality Banksy is parallel to Kim and Kanye.
In Banksy's case, the fatburg in the sewer pipe of the art world.

In Banksy's case, the fatburg in the sewer pipe of the art world. Just wondering out loud, how did you make it to this forum? I think for many people Banksy made art accessible, understandable, relatable and no matter where his art is currently, a 7 year old or granny can mostly understand his message - the simplicity, but also the deeper meaning, behind his work. For many he was the first artist who appealed to the masses, where at the time anyone could buy it, and even now people who would normally have 0 interest in art and political messages are interested in graffiti and sub-culture however they got there. He "made" a movement, no doubt David Sheperd appealed to the masses too with his elephant prints. Long before Banksy.
Art has always been accessible and understandable. Blek made it accessible. So did lots of other urban artists inc Haring, Basquait and many other.
Anyone can buy anyone's art for low prices anyway.
Without the marketing, newspaper advertorials and pushing up prices by organising celebrity attended shows etc. I think you will find that there would be a lot less percentage wise interest.
Tell me about the graffiti and subculture, because from where i'm sitting it revolves around marketing and promoting urban art for profit.

Thanks so much for your help! But it isnโt the two links you provided as they are print on demand copies. The one I have is the original rare poster from.. Iโm not sure when.. 1981? It popped up on the moma page and had there was some info on the product page - once bought the page disappeared. I didnโt get to read it properly...DOH! And I donโt know how to reverse search it.... ? Info - Jean-Michel Basquiat: Untitled, 1981 Framed Poster Item: 8996-14701

The 1981 refers to when the original was made.
