Banksy HW only make £37,500 at Phillips today****, by Feral Things on Oct 15, 2015 19:57:38 GMT 1, The last lot in the auction made me laugh! As many of you might already know, Jerry Saltz is the art critic for New York magazine and is definitely worth following on Instagram and Facebook. A few years ago after a Richter painting sold for a record $34.2 million at auction, Saltz offered to pay any artist $155 plus the cost of materials for a fake-Richter. This was partly because, like the rest of us, he can't afford to spend millions on a genuine Richter but predominately because of his dislike of the absurdity of it all. The artist who Saltz ended up buying a fake-Richter from was Stanley Casselman and you can read about the whole things here.
I mention all this because the last lot in this auction was one of Casselman's faux-Richters which came about as a result of Saltz's challenge. It sold for £74k earlier today - all very meta!

Not so bad for a canvas.

Banksy HW only make £37,500 at Phillips today****, by kaos on Oct 15, 2015 23:27:31 GMT 1, Please do forgive me if I speak out of turn here. I am not only new to this forum but also to collecting art. Having said that, I was speaking to Bonhams not too long ago about their upcoming auction and prices. I was told and I quote "auction prices are always much, much lower than gallery prices, some times ten or fifteen times lower and they do not necessarily represent market value of an art work". Make of it what you will.

Banksy HW only make £37,500 at Phillips today****, by Unica on Oct 15, 2015 23:39:20 GMT 1, this canvas is not unique. not numbered, maybe an "open edition" ?! chriestis sold an unique Heavy Weaponry canvas for 75k in 2010 !! It seems odd that this is part of an "open edition" I thought Heavy Weaponry was an edition canvas. Has anyone seen the Pest Control COA on this one? I would love to know what it says.

HW and most originals usually state "#/#", "Part of a series" or "Unique in its format"

Auction prices are certainly not "always" lower. Some of the record prices for a given artist's work are from auctions not galleries.
Also take what auctioneers say about the prices at their own auctions with a pinch of salt. It's their job to encourage you to bid.

Agreed, I've not heard of an open edition. And I'm skeptical if they exist. Hence why I'd love to see the coa on this. It's probably only a matter of time until it's back in the market with a gallery. It's inusual to see a HW with a black Banksy tag.

Probably be super easy to restore this as good as new. Still a great deal even after seeing the condition. Thanks for sharing photos!
