Banksy HMV Print, by dkla on Apr 29, 2007 14:29:08 GMT 1, Call me thick, but I never understood what the message is in HMV. Is it just the irony/humor of the juxtapose or is there something deeper there? I just can't seem to figure this one out for some reason.

Banksy HMV Print, by nombei on Apr 29, 2007 16:58:42 GMT 1, not sure if you know the story behind the image or not, so excuse me if you already know this...
HMV stands for "His Master's Voice". this is the name of the painting that was then used as the logo for the Gramophone record company, which eventually got bought by RCA.
here's an old picture of the logo on a record...
as for Banksy's interpretation, i've always taken it as the dog's response to "His Master's Voice". as in, "here's a bazooka up your ass, you bastard! i'm a free dog!!" then again, maybe Banksy just hates the HMV music store chain.

Banksy HMV Print, by crazyarsemother on Apr 30, 2007 10:30:50 GMT 1, Got one in my lounge. Its signed but I don't think it has the red Banksy stamp. Its genuine but framed now. Looks great. I think its a bit of fun which I prefer. It will be still fun in 20 years time. I think Im less likely to tire of that than some of the other stuff. Its more in keeping with Banksy's earlier stencils I think.

worth thinking about i guess

Banksy HMV Print, by dgb133 on Jul 23, 2007 18:42:39 GMT 1, That's what I was thinking. Artist Proofs are signed 99% of the time. Backdoor print. And it makes me worry about all the others. Also private auction. You don't know who's bidding against you.
Should any of these be stamped? I don't see a stamp on Choppers or Mary?
No mention of provenance too.

Banksy HMV Print, by dave313perry on Jul 23, 2007 18:56:38 GMT 1, Looks as dodgy as hell to me, all these images are easy to recreate with screenprinting facilities, unlike others such as Grin Reaper, the paper is reasonably easy to source and no signature so?
my guess, wouldnt touch with a barge pole unless i had some sort of provenance via POW.
And as for the 'back door print' sounds suuuper dodgy! would have thought it would be signed for a start - also does all the paper look exactly the same on all the prints, and is this the case with the originals???
Peace

Banksy HMV Print, by kentkid on Jul 23, 2007 18:59:07 GMT 1, I don't think the Happy Choppers print came with the POW stamp. They were just numbered and came with the Banksy tag.
I was also interested in this print, but the seller hasn't replied to my questions, and he's put the print dimensions down as 350mm x 100mm, when I'm pretty sure it's 700mm x 500mm.
Could be an honest mistake, but if you're trying to sell something of value, surely you would get the dimensions correct?

Banksy HMV Print, by corblimeylimey on Jul 23, 2007 19:09:57 GMT 1, This could just be a mistake, but on the Happy Chopper....
"Size: 350mm x 100mm"
More info wouldn't have hurt either, there have been unnumbered Happy Choppers for sale on ebay before, it wouldn't take much to write a number on one would it. If the seller can give the name of the first owner of the print and it checks with POW that would be a step in the right direction and better still if there's proof of the exchanges of ownership in between (provenance). The listing doesn't even mention it's a screenprint, it really could be an inkjet size 350mm X 100mm.
How easy is it to set up an ebay shop? this sellers shop is looking pretty empty apart from these 5 Banksy's and his feedback is good but only as a buyer he's only sold 5 items and they date back to 2004 and 2005.

Banksy HMV Print, by Run Pig Run on Jul 26, 2007 17:29:07 GMT 1, guilty until proven innocent eh folks?
the mary is a very low number and was probably bought in 2003/2004 well before the POW stamp
the seller also has receipt for the happy choppers and has amended the print size details.
all looks ok to me. anyone got any other opinions?

Banksy HMV Print, by dgb133 on Jul 26, 2007 18:57:24 GMT 1, No concern over the fact that Mary has no POW stamp? I'm not 100% sure they all did though.
Or the claim that an unsigned unumbered WSM print is an "artist proof" Just gives me the creeps overall.
Receipts can be faked thousand times easier than a print. I dunno. Could be real? I don't think expressing caution in this instance is wrong.

Banksy HMV Print, by Run Pig Run on Jul 26, 2007 19:43:59 GMT 1, expressing caution is never wrong, but saying they are dodgy as hell without any proof is unhelpful and will damage the sellers sales. he could lose hundreds/thousands of pounds just because of a few peoples comments. i would always research buying any banksy print and ask a few questions if anyone decides to jump to conclusions thats fine but personally i think it's wrong to post with the tone that has been used in some of these replies.

Banksy HMV Print, by dgb133 on Jul 26, 2007 19:53:58 GMT 1, It is just a message board on the internet.
Goes without saying you should second guess everything you read here. Whether it's praise or dodgy caution. There's motives for everything. I do sense people sometimes say this stuff to try and get a good deal too?

Banksy HMV Print, by bison on Jul 26, 2007 20:58:23 GMT 1, ive had two email replys from the seller tonight and.....as much as id luv to bid for hmv and choppers(if anyone has these for sale please pm)the answers he/she gave me were not the attitude of someone who may lose thousands through lack of trying to rest the mind of a potential buyer.seller said that all prints were purchased from tom tom(no problem there)but only had two receipts, thats fine as well so i asked if i could have pics of them...not possible, doesn't have a scanner..that was the Sharpe reply.got to say that the answers he gave me to questions were neither good or bad but as Ive said seemed to show no concern to provenance.personally,I'm gonna leave it.

Banksy HMV Print, by pawl on Jul 26, 2007 21:19:30 GMT 1, I'm very happy to tell you that I've bought all of these prints... They belonged to a very good friend of mine, who was flabergasted when he read the shit that you lot were writing in this thread - so sold them all to me for a great price. He is an avid art collector - who pretty much owns every Banksy print, who just wanted to make space on his walls for new prints.
Don't be so quick to judge next time.......not everyone who collects Banksy's is a member of this forum.
