Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by Deleted on Nov 1, 2015 10:58:34 GMT 1, So I came across this guy KAN and his work on the PTA site while checking up on that piece of overpriced decorative drivel by the High Priestess of Abstract Lite, Maya Hayuk.
Thought his work fresh and popping. Never heard of him on this forum, or anywhere, actually. Curious why he seems to have no following.
I think his work might be a bit too resolved, not enough unfinished left for the viewer to fill in, but really tight and focused. Looking into the prices of an original.
Just a bit shocked that he can't sell 50 of these prints at 270 GBP when the same site sold out 99 copies of that insipid Seth Vortex at 300+ GBP...looks a half-baked mediocre illustration for a children's book.
printthemall.com/prints/london.html
Anyone here collect KAN? Got any insight or opinions on his work? Like to hear it.
Thanks.

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by Dungle on Nov 1, 2015 12:14:44 GMT 1, Can't say I've heard of KAN before.
Can't say I like that image either though. I have no desire to have some thug wearing a bandana mid riot staring down at me from the wall.

I've been to tonnes of riots and they're generally full of art students and politically motivated self employed workers.

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by Coach on Nov 1, 2015 13:20:26 GMT 1, KAN had a joint show not too long ago, and I thought the work looked great. Suprised there isn't more love for KAN here.

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by BKBOI on Nov 1, 2015 13:27:16 GMT 1, I'm actually more pissed now. After reading my initial post, I may have actually defended Maya Hayuk.
The point is dude is trying to compare a start up against 2 commercially successful artists.
Add edit:
That's right coach, he had a 2 man show last May. Pieces looked really great.

There was a time when the populace of this board were interested in the cultures anti authoritarian "content", its activist based nature and it's rejection of the mores and values of archaic conservative art institutions. That changed dramatically in around 2006/7 due to resale values picking up, UK economy being hammered and people shifting into "survival" mode ala USA culture. Combined with a decade of cuts and job losses, the younger collectors who came into the scene, FR etc came in it solely to profit financially. The art and it's meaning becoming secondary. The ethics and values behind why we supported these artists in the first place, shifted, the board was no longer here to support artists or the culture, but the other way around, artists were shouted down if they produced work that didn't shift instantly on the secondary market for a profit. The recent Jeff Gillete release is a perfect example, not one mention of the art, his ability to paint, his technique, the politics behind it, his history etc etc. So the more insipid, derivative, calculated and abstract start moving to the fore. Something you can make 50 quid on, becomes more important than a much greater piece of work that may not sell out and potentially generate a future profit, however small. KAN being a prime example. The forum is now a small self serving community that operates outside of Street Art culture, it occasionally dips its vulture beak into the world to pick out a flippable print, but otherwise, is becoming more irrelevant by the day ;-) Discuss....

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by Deleted on Nov 1, 2015 13:56:10 GMT 1, What makes you think he's a "thug" ? I've been to tonnes of riots and they're generally full of art students and politically motivated self employed workers. This piece was from the London riots, and essentially, a significant majority of people rioting were opportunistic thugs - A minority were politically motivated. Many were in-work youths...who later lost their jobs after getting caught, prosecuted and ending up with criminal records. The whole incidence was so very sad - I can't recall any winners. Opportunistic or not.. there are very few "thugs" in relation to the whole. Thousands participated. If you create a culture where you place $1500 sneakers in a window, tell everyone who lives there that they're nobody unless they have them, then decimate the communities by taking away jobs, youth centers, libraries, education programs, integration programs and social support, ultimately their ability to participate in what you're promoting in their communities. Then increase oppressive surveillance and criminally abuse stop and search powers for people of colour. Then at some point, in the not too distant future you should expect a riot.
Perpetuating the state and Tory medias idea of a "thug" as a poor person in a deprived community under attack by the states economic program is... just well.. f**k it , I don't know. No wonder they're angry hey. Pass me the Bandanna !

And having witnessed this particular riot first-hand I can tell you that they certainly were NOT "full of art students and politically motivated self employed workers " You can be rich or poor and act like a thug... money is not the deciding factor - one's behaviour is. What makes one teenager set fire to a shop in a riot, versus the next child from the same socio-economic background who chooses not to? The reasons are multifactorial. I agree, but if we're talking about economic damage to society, we're looking in the wrong place, and rather than a bandanna representing violence against communities, it should rightly be business suits and breifcases hey. The damage these guys caused to London is a tiny fraction of what others do day in day out and get bailed out for it with billions ;-) Anyway, nice print, solid artist with a sound history.

Well said nuart. At the rate this forum is devolving into a valuation board, Silky might as well rename this place "Will It Flip?" Speaking of the founder of this place, it's not surprising that Silky hardly ever comes around here. Just collects his checks for the advertisements at the top of the page and chuckles about the good ole days when this place actually talked about street art and not just in the 'price check' sense. Quite sad, frankly. I guess uaa is what you make of it,and his lack of presence/participation aside from the money making component, well its no surprise what this place has become. A cespool for the opportunists who only see this genre as a quick buck. I guess this is the UAA we deserve. Now wheres my 50 page thread about the next stik release, i need some heavy, deep street art that will get me the most for my flip.

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by sakyamuni on Nov 1, 2015 14:59:32 GMT 1, regarding KAN, i wouldn't say that he is ignored. He has frequent exhibitions in France and he is involved in many projects. As usual, we should remember that artists can be successful without any notice in this forum, especially if they are not from uk/us. Ron english print is not sold out neither but i am sure he is not especially worried about his future carreer because of that... Same for Sowat, his print is still available but he is selling canvas for thousands and selected for the Villa medicis residence this year...

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by Peter Bengtsen on Nov 1, 2015 16:21:06 GMT 1, There was a time when the populace of this board were interested in the cultures anti authoritarian "content", its activist based nature and it's rejection of the mores and values of archaic conservative art institutions. That changed dramatically in around 2006/7 due to resale values picking up, UK economy being hammered and people shifting into "survival" mode ala USA culture.
It is worth noting that this forum began operating in early 2006, so the time period you are referring to must have been relatively short.
It is equally worth noting that one of the reasons this forum was set up in the first place was for the moderator to have a platform beyond eBay for selling his Banksy prints.
The value aspect of the art has been a prime interest of this forum from day one.

Most of the 'original' members with 'knowledge' (bs) were residing on this ebay forum talking about the prices of banksy prints.

The value aspect of the art has been a prime interest of this forum from day one. The dominant interests of the OEF and this culture in general were street art, activism, graffiti, collecting, profit. In that order, and had been since the turn of the century. The OEF migrated here after ebay changed the user interface of their forums. Silky built this forum using the content and knowledge of the other. It was a forum visited by Banksy and members of his inner circle amongst many others including Bast, Faile, Swoon etc etc. The majority of members core values reflected those of the artists. In particular Banksy's. No one is bemoaning people making some coin, we've all done very well from the culture, academically and financially. But there's a difference between Larry Levan and EDM, if you know what I mean, and as the legacy of house and techno should be protected, so should that of Street Art, but it's all a bit EDM in here these days. What's that saying about knowing about the "price of everything and the value of nothing" ?
Sunday moan from the old guy over. :-) Anyway, KAN, check him out.

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by Peter Bengtsen on Nov 1, 2015 17:28:00 GMT 1, It is worth noting that this forum began operating in early 2006, so the time period you are referring to must have been relatively short. I agree with much of the above, although I would add the following:
The populace of the OEF (Old eBay Forum, for those unfamiliar with the abbreviation) and this forum may have been overlapping, but they were not the same.
Banksy's rise in popularity in 2006 with a broader audience following the media coverage of Barely Legal and related stunts (e.g. the modified Paris Hilton CD and Disneyland intervention), as well as subsequent record auction results for Banksy's work, drew many new members to this forum who had not previously been on the OEF.
While people, myself included, who were members of the OEF did also have accounts here, they continued their discussions on the OEF until Wallkandy was set up in 2007. Wallkandy - unlike this forum - was established as a replacement for the OEF, and I would say it was the place the majority of the "populace" of the OEF migrated to. This was quite clearly reflected in the type of discussions taking place on Wallkandy, at least in the beginning.

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by mika on Nov 1, 2015 17:42:09 GMT 1, Some of his pieces are politically engaged, but not all of them as you can see on his website. Definitively under the radar on this forum, but he's very active in France and is featured in an upcoming Museum group show in Morroco.

Anyway, here's to another 10 years ! Let's look forward, the streets are throwing up some great new names and work and just today Jeff Gilette, a school teacher, made a few quid and KAN has been brought to people's attention. A good day all in.

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by nex on Nov 1, 2015 23:32:52 GMT 1, What makes one teenager set fire to a shop in a riot, versus the next child from the same socio-economic background who chooses not to? The reasons are multifactorial. Exactly and hence why using a blanket statement of 'opportunistic thugs' is doing a disservice to actually trying to understand why it happened.

You might want to re-read this guy's posts again - he is not using it as a blanket statement.
'A significant majority were opportunistic thugs' reads pretty all encompassing to me.

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by chrisell66 on Nov 2, 2015 7:12:56 GMT 1, So I came across this guy KAN and his work on the PTA site while checking up on that piece of overpriced decorative drivel by the High Priestess of Abstract Lite, Maya Hayuk. Thought his work fresh and popping. Never heard of him on this forum, or anywhere, actually. Curious why he seems to have no following. I think his work might be a bit too resolved, not enough unfinished left for the viewer to fill in, but really tight and focused. Looking into the prices of an original. Just a bit shocked that he can't sell 50 of these prints at 270 GBP when the same site sold out 99 copies of that insipid Seth Vortex at 300+ GBP...looks a half-baked mediocre illustration for a children's book. printthemall.com/prints/london.htmlAnyone here collect KAN? Got any insight or opinions on his work? Like to hear it. Thanks. Maybe because its ยฃ270 for erm ..... right.
The odd Jeremy has no doubt used Daddies money to show how right on they are - but for everyone else ยฃ270 either buys a far better print or gets you drunk for a week. Or equates to a lot of saving on minimum wage. Its a press picture for heavens sake - turning it into dots doesn't do anything for me
Not exactly speaking to a market is it - make a thousand of them and bang em out at ยฃ10 maybe they'd sell - once you're spending ยฃ270 on a print you aren't rioting.
Oh and looting Foot Locker isn't affecting social change. The last spat of riots began with a cause in Tottenham - within 48 hours the reason got forgotten as big TVs went walking down the road around the UK

Got any insight or opinions on his work? Like to hear it. Thanks. I hear what you are saying about KAN...but Seth is special in his own right, and this 99print represented the first lithoprint release by this hugely popular french artist. Seth has a truly massive following from people who do not really follow art - Seth could have sold x5 as many of the same print if he had so chosen. He has done TV work for the best part of two decades, which has taken him around the globe. Seth's strength is his ability and willingness to collaborate with local artists and engage the local culture in a non-patronising manner. My favourite Seth piece: That Seth piece is really nice. All I knew was the print that left me underwhelmed. Also appreciate the insight into his thinking.
Thanks for enlightening!

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by Happy Shopper on Nov 3, 2015 14:07:14 GMT 1, Technically his work looks very clever, but there's nothing for me in terms on content. I'd like to see his whole process from finding photographs and how he goes about pixelating them and painting them... photoshop involved and grids? Can't believe he's just painting these by eye.

Curious why no one seems to collect, care or talk about KAN., by Feral Things on Nov 3, 2015 20:27:14 GMT 1, Personally, I think Kan's work is really interesting and seems to have something genuine to say about protest and social disorder across Europe.
The original piece that the PTM print is based upon was created with 20,299 individual dots using Krink and spraypaint and the choice of source images is deliberate.ย The subjects of those original source images obviously have their own backstories and motivations; they're real people with all the complexities that comes with that.ย But the continued use of these particular images by the mainstream media as stock images to represent, for example, the London riots or anti-austerity riots in Athens as a whole has strips out all context and nuance.ย Kan's distortion and simplification of the images through pixelation/pointillism therefore underscores the media's reductionist approach to complex issues and highlights that many of our opinions about these issues are formed through the lens of the media.
I think there's plenty of interest out there in Kan's work but there's lots of artists (especially those from mainland Europe for some reason) that aren't discussed on forums.ย There's a thread about his last show with links to photos and interviews here elsewhere.
