Lazarides Rathbone
Friday 16th of October 2015 to Thursday 12th of November 2015
Featuring JR
This October Lazarides Rathbone welcomes Parisian artist and TED Prize winner JR back to London with Crossing, an exhibition of all new work from the acclaimed series of Les Bosquets (2014–present) and Unframed Ellis Island (2014–present). The showcase will feature a mix of colour prints as well as the artist's signature wood mounted monochromatic paper pieces. Visitors will be invited to experience the world of JR through the juxtaposition of these two unique series of all new work.
The Unframed Ellis Island project seeks to commemorate the stories of millions of immigrants who entered the United States via Ellis Island. Collecting source materials from the Ellis Island archives, JR created a series of installations that bring to life the chronicles of those coming from all over the world.
In 2014 JR was invited by the New York City Ballet to create a large-scale art installation in collaboration with the Company dancers for their 2014 Art Series. Following the success of these installations, JR launched Les Bosquets in collaboration with the New York City Ballet making his debut as a choreographer. Succeeding this NYC-based ballet series, JR produced a unique photographic series of the Opéra de Paris ballet dancers shot on the roof of the Paris Opera house. JR's new series of artworks featuring Les Bosquets draws from images of these interventions in New York and Paris.
Coinciding with his exhibition at the gallery, the short film Les Bosquets will be showing at the London Film Festival. In conjunction with the exhibition and film release, on the 12th October Phaidon are launching a definitive retrospective monograph on JR's work as an artist-photographer and his cross-media participatory practice.

JR - Crossing @ Lazarides Rathbone Gallery , by 11 on Nov 7, 2015 3:33:07 GMT 1, Ha - That's better....
So, anyway...went along to this as well
This wasn't so much a new show but 2 previous exhibitions coming together, from the Ballet series (Les Bosquets) and the Ellis Island installations, so wasn't 'new work'....but an opportunity to see his work in person from 2 bodies produced outside of the UK. They are also screening the Ellis film up on the top floor.
I love the Rathbone Gallery and it seemed to be the perfect setting for this show with the huge and very impressive wooden pasted pieces hanging alongside cibachrome works for the Les Bosquets series that went perfectly in the spacious ground floor gallery. The stairways (with the old victorian paneling) were perfect for his paste-ups and then the same for the 1st floor gallery with all of its period features was a perfect setting for the Ellis Island pieces
And as you got to go up to the 2nd floor for the Ellis Screening you even get to see all the cool hand sprayed David Choe work (but thats another thread)
I personally enjoy photography but sometimes find JR a bit self-obsessed and as his own biggest fan it turns me off but putting that aside I couldn't help be impressed with the work and the use of the Gallery spaces

I'm wondering - how does the self-obsession you describe manifest itself in his work? Or is it something you picked up on in one of his interviews? Just curious why you feel that way.

JR - Crossing @ Lazarides Rathbone Gallery , by Matt on Nov 7, 2015 11:42:03 GMT 1, thanks 11
Saw most of these at Perrotin in Paris a few weeks back, and i though the whole body of work looks great.
What I like with JR is that his pics tell a story on a few levels (the story of the people involved, the story of making / taking the pic which is usually made into a movie, and the bigger meaning of why it is an interesting composition)
However i think that you are right to some extent, as time passes it looks like he is taking some of the pictures thinking "this is gonna be a cool JR that people will love" rather than "this is gonna be a great powerful image"…but I guess an pic can be both and the guy does what he wants in the end

JR - Crossing @ Lazarides Rathbone Gallery , by 11 on Nov 7, 2015 15:05:54 GMT 1, Ouff!! Are the photos pasted up on the walls, trapphus..what is trapp hus in English? Like the corridors where the stairs go? Love it! Iiiih love that feeling, take the whole f**king building, blaam up with beauty in their faces. Take the whole town, blaaam blaaam blaaam!
Yes - the stairways were all pasted with the images - it gets even better though as once you go up another flight David Choe has basically doodled in spray paint all the way up that last flight
I'll pop the pics up later

JR - Crossing @ Lazarides Rathbone Gallery , by Deleted on Nov 8, 2015 12:21:49 GMT 1, Yes I've been too and thoroughly enjoyed it - JRs work in the flesh was a lot more impressive than I expected and the overall set up at Rathbone was great.
I tend to go to most Laz shows and had no expectations really for this one but was pleasantly surprised.
There's a planned screening on NBF I think of the film later in November.

I can trade it with a very lively little flyer/booklet that he made for his exhibition in Baden-Baden , near Strasbourg .. Classy one ! And rare !

If anyone finds a link to it online anywhere, let me know.
