PRINT GLUED TO THE MATT BOARD, by dizibonzai on Nov 16, 2015 2:35:40 GMT 1, Hi All,
I recently purchased a framed print said to be framed by a professional.
When it arrived I realised it was a real rookie job & the framer had glued the print to matt board.
I took the print a restoration expert and they couldn't help me as they feared damage would be done to the artwork due to the glue the framer used.
So Im just wondering has this happened to anyone here before? Any luck resolving the issue?
Also would you expect a refund if this happened to you?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thx.

That's the worst feeling expecting you were going to have a "mint" print arrive only to have been duped. If a professional restorer/conservationist is unable to restore the print to as close mint condition without damaging the print, I would be demanding a refund from the seller. Having the print with that glue could cause more damage to the print in the long run as well. Hope you are able to get your money back.

PRINT GLUED TO THE MATT BOARD, by Deleted on Nov 16, 2015 9:09:44 GMT 1, I had some Hirst wallpaper framed up in 2008, when moving house a few years later I managed to crack the glass, when removing it from the frame I too found that it had been glued to the board!! Absolutely gutted, worst thing is I had other prints framed from the same guy which I fear have all been glued....I dare not look.

PRINT GLUED TO THE MATT BOARD, by alexdb on Nov 16, 2015 9:13:16 GMT 1, Not sure if I can help you here, since it has never happened to me. If the restorer can't restore the print it must be in that condition that it is not professional framed at all. Best thing for the future is always to have a look of the print out of the frame, otherwise you will never know what happened.
My work is framed by a very good framer in the Netherlands. I pay a large sum of money to the frames because I am that crazy to have things museum standard framed. However, all the frames that are hanging here are numbered by the framer. So (something that likely will not happen) if I want to sell some art with frame, the buyer can also check with the framer how it has been framed and with what materials.
With regards asking for a refund, is a difficult subject. I do not know what has been fully discussed and it is your word against the seller. In the seller's opinion 'professional framed' might be different to your standards. You can always try, of course, and that is what I should do.

PRINT GLUED TO THE MATT BOARD, by dizibonzai on Nov 16, 2015 10:33:39 GMT 1, Thanks for everyones input, much appreciated.
It totally sucks, I rarely buy framed prints but I can understand if someone wants to sell the print + frame as a whole, I get that.
I didn't think to quiz the guy after he said the print was mint & framed professionally, I naturally assumed it would be a quality job. It wasn't.
When I raised it the seller was difficult & couldn't actually see what the issue was, I don't think he was all there. He had no problem taking my money but had issue returning it.
So it looks like I am the proud owner of David Choe's 'Blanket AP' + a piece of Matt board. Sold 3 prints to raise the funds as well. Yay.
Lesson learned, it won't happen again.
If anyone else is buying framed prints take an extra 2 seconds to ask if the print has been framed the right way & have a condition of payment the option to inspect it upon arrival & return it if you're not satisfied.
Trust me it's worth it.

PRINT GLUED TO THE MATT BOARD, by Deleted on Nov 16, 2015 15:30:11 GMT 1, If I buy anything expensive framed i'll be meeting at a framers and getting them to undo it before handing over funds. not sure how much a framer would charge but I assume it wouldn't cost too much.

PRINT GLUED TO THE MATT BOARD, by shadowuk on Jan 12, 2016 17:39:11 GMT 1, To get my Stik Dancer restored the restorer said thats the only way they would be able to get it looking as good as possible. I have received it back and have to say it does look better than I thought it would. The print was a give-away freebie, so im just glad to be able to now frame it. I'm not worried at all that its been backed with stronger card although if I was buying it I would have my concerns.

PRINT GLUED TO THE MATT BOARD, by Dr Plip on Jan 12, 2016 19:34:58 GMT 1, Personal choice, but I wouldn't have a problem with a Dancer print having creases or damage from a drunken lightsaber fight. I wouldn't go out to cause that damage, and you always want to find the best example you can, but I think wear would be excusable given its origins. I remember some stuffed ones selling for good money on ebay. I kept thinking I'd wait and pick one up a bit cheaper. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.....................sigh.
