RECOMMENDED TALKS, DISCUSSIONS & INTERVIEWS, by met on Jan 10, 2016 9:40:58 GMT 1, This thread is for recommended Lectures, Debates, Panel Discussions, Conversations, Q&A Sessions, and Interviews โ art-related or covering other subjects.
Most of the content will probably come from YouTube and Vimeo, but written / transcript format is welcome as well.
----------
If posting a VIDEO, please also insert the title in writing, even when the title is already clear from the video itself. Such text will remain in case the video is later removed from the relevant YouTube or other hosting account โ meaning forum members can still identify the recommendation should they wish to search for a duplicate copy elsewhere.
In addition, it may be helpful if each video were accompanied by a brief summary (perhaps a couple of sentences) of the participants, main topic covered (if not clear from the title), and programme from which it originally came. Members can then make rapid, reasonably informed decisions about whether it's likely to interest them.
This thread is especially intended for longer videos (10 minutes to 2+ hours) where some effort in patience, attentiveness and reflection is required by the viewer. It will therefore be ill-suited when looking for a quick video fix, casual read, or light chitchat while on the run. But it should offer interesting and thought-provoking material to refer back to during quieter moments. Hopefully, any effort invested will be rewarded with insight, inspiration, or just entertainment.
----------
For WRITTEN MATERIAL sourced from websites, please provide a link to the web page and at least a brief description. Copying and pasting the first few paragraphs or the whole text (depending on length) into a post could be useful for ease of reference. This also addresses the real risk of losing recommendations due to source websites ceasing to exist or specific web pages being taken down at some point in the future.
If wishing to post scans (e.g. of newspaper, magazine or book interviews) using an image-hosting service like Photobucket, please only do so if your account uploads on the website have a degree of permanence, i.e. you don't envisage deleting or moving the scanned image from the host site in the foreseeable future.
----------
SPECIAL REQUEST: Given the probable length of the videos or written material, there's the prospect that others may end up feeling they've wasted their time watching or reading something which turns out to be of mediocre quality or minor interest. The content should therefore be familiar to and actively recommended by the member posting it, covering a subject of particular interest or importance to them.

RECOMMENDED TALKS, DISCUSSIONS & INTERVIEWS, by met on Jan 10, 2016 9:58:16 GMT 1, Christopher Hitchens on Freedom of Speech
On 15 November 2006, at the invitation of the University of Toronto's Hart House Debating Club, Hitchens argued the affirmative position on the subject of that evening's debate: 'Be It Resolved: Freedom of Speech Includes the Freedom to Hate.'
This was aired on 7 January 2007 on the programme, Big Ideas, a TVO production. [TVO is a publicly-funded, educational television station serving the province of Ontario in Canada.]
One of my favourite quotes from Hitchens here: "Don't take refuge in the false security of consensus."
It's another way of saying, "Question everything, including your own truths."

RECOMMENDED TALKS, DISCUSSIONS & INTERVIEWS, by Coach on Jan 10, 2016 12:55:33 GMT 1, I appreciate they this may appear unoriginal as it features Hitchens too, but this debate was the first time I became aware that intellectual talks were on YouTube and that it's not all music and cats playing the piano (thanks to my eldest son). And maybe because it was the first I saw, or perhaps because of the passion with which Hitchens spoke, it's the one that stands out for me, having watched many others.
It's the Intelegence2 (squared) debate, regarding the premise - the Catholic Church is a force for good in the world.
Having seen met's thread, I have watched Hitchens argument again this morning, and it's just as powerful as I remembered it to be.
The titles of the video are - The Intelegence Squared Debate Christopher Hitchens Fry 1 and 2
The full debate can be found here:

RECOMMENDED TALKS, DISCUSSIONS & INTERVIEWS, by Feral Things on Jan 10, 2016 17:30:18 GMT 1, I found the following really interesting and insightful: ย - Jean-Michel Basquiat, Al Diaz and Shannon Dawson did an interview, which appeared in the Village Voice on 11 December 1978, about the origins and meaning of SAMO; there's a scan of the article here. - Rammellzee gave what is probably the definitive interview about his history, theories and art to The Wire back in 2004.ย There aren't any of the great accompanying photos but someone's typed up the text here. - It's not an interview, but there was a long-read profile of David Zwernier in The New Yorker back in 2013 which provided an interesting insight into the high-end contemporary art world; the profile is available here. - 'Beyond the Street' has interviews with Blu, Cyclops, Parlรก, Swoon, Miss Van, Futura and more.ย It's easily in my top five books and I'd recommend picking up a copy but you can read some extracts here.
There's a few interviews that aren't currently online and unfortunately, although I've got hard copies of each, I don't think it would be right for me to publish them here.ย However, if anyone's particularly interested in the following artists then I'd recommend trying to track down the following: - Back in '03, Swindle #3 had a piece with Invader, (EDIT: having checked back at my copy of Swindle I now realise I meant the interview in Graffiti Art Magazine - sorry!) which is interesting given all that's changed since then. - '3D & the Art of Massive Attack' has an interview with 3D which explains some of the imagery he uses. - Juxtapoz #112 from July 2010 had a really in depth and wide-ranging interview with Os Gรชmeos.
I know it's not street art relate but I've always found 'Francis Bacon: Fragments Of A Portrait - interview by David Sylvester' really interesting; there's so much of the artist in his paintings so it's interesting to see Bacon himself:

RECOMMENDED TALKS, DISCUSSIONS & INTERVIEWS, by globalplanb on Jan 17, 2016 16:57:09 GMT 1, Title - White privilege, Racism, white denial and the cost of inequality Speaker - Tim Wise I would've given this a "thumbs up" but that wouldn't have been fair to Tim Wise, who's actually a great orator by the way, skilfully dealing with the delivery of these complex issues. However, for those unfortunate and old enough to actually remember, having to live with and through this insult, all I can say is "What's new?!" To the uninitiated young this is all enlightening, even empowering and awesome. Whilst to us older persons it's an evolving reality. With that said I thank you for bringing it to light here on this forum but fear it's context will falli on many deaf ears. I with all my heart, hope to be wrong, however, feel this will not be the case in my life time.

RECOMMENDED TALKS, DISCUSSIONS & INTERVIEWS, by Feral Things on Mar 23, 2016 21:33:10 GMT 1, This is Norman Mailer's piece entitled 'The Faith of Graffiti' which appeared in Esquire in May 1974. It was originally written as the introduction to Mervyn Kurlansky and Jon Naar's book of the same name. The piece was significant partially because the Esquire article was what brought graffiti to the attention of a lot of people outside New York and Philladelphia for the first time and partially because at the time Mailer was the most well known and respected writer to pay attention to, and write about, graffiti. And, no, I won't be scanning in the pages about 'The return of the sexy nightgown' but you'll be pleased to hear that I also won't be scanning in the adverts for 'Jock Itch' mediated powder.
