Crikey, that is ugly.

Bearing in mind what may be a fallen-angel theme, one could speculate the painting is deliberately godawful. However, such an argument is only convincing when ignorant of the artist's wider body of work.

If this kind of imagery is appealing, a cheaper alternative would be to create your own. Have a stroll around any area in the UK where there's a high concentration of bars and nightclubs. At around 2 a.m. on a Saturday or Sunday morning, whip out your camera. There will be plenty of inspiration on tap, especially outside of venues favoured by stag dos and hen nights.

Granted, you won't find hokey, faux-graffiti tags. But there's bound to be a few pairs of fairy wings being worn, along with fine examples of wonderfully and defiantly inappropriate dress for the winter weather.

One can also become transfixed by makeup which — over the course of an evening's worth of smudging, sweat and perhaps rain — has mutated into Joker-like theatrical grotesqueness. It's often accompanied by droopy eyelids, stumbling and fumbling. And let us not forget the climactic spectacle of individuals babbling incoherently, drooling, while simultaneously attempting to stuff greasy, mystery-meat kebabs into their pie holes.

In fairness, Martin Whatson's painting does quite well at capturing this typical conclusion to a typical British weekend night out. Even so, a good photograph would be just as effective.
