Better than their home country. Better than all the other countries that they've travelled through. Whether it's the welfare system, NHS, or just plain old job opportunities.

Could the picture of La Miserable tear gassed Cosette have been painted onto the board beforehand and put up in a hurry while the stencil of the gas canister was being sprayed directly onto the wall? I can't suss it out from the pictures. That looks way too difficult to do quickly even behind scaffold and tarpaulin?

Doesn't have to take them on but how about speaking out for the people that have been subject to the horror of these type groups that cannot escape? No one forced them to bypass safe countries and head for Calais.
They could have stayed in a safe country en route and got a job or work for a living.
We all know why they want to come to Britian. Europe too and the majority being young men, lets hope they all fit in and work for a living and are not a civilian army in disguise thatw ant to kill us.
In the 1950's and 60's migrants arrived in the UK, worked hard, took any job they could to make a better life.
Todays migrants just expect a free house and money moan about the color of the front door.

Banksy Street Art โข Les Miserables, by 11 on Jan 25, 2016 3:09:58 GMT 1, After realising it was only on ply-board and fearing I might not see it if I waited till tomorrow I jumped in the motor and shot up there. Well worth the journey, a really lovely piece especially for a street-piece. I don't think it needed the QR code to link to the video as the piece itself should have evoked enough thought to make the viewer look into the meaning and relevance.
I expected there to be more people, there were maybe 5 or 6 when i got there but someone had already tried to remove it. A 3" strip across the bottom of the piece had already been pulled off as well but fortunately the piece remained in pretty much one-piece.
I saw someone else pull away another thin strip of the ply from the bottom of the piece and then another group removed all the screws and attempted to leverage it off without any success thankfully.
From what I can tell the female figure and flag may have been sprayed up at a different location and then have then transported the boarding to the shop. It looks like they have then glued the painted boards onto existing boarding and screwed it down while it set. The CS Gas canister and clouds were obviously added at the location but that might explain how he could do an intricate piece so easily.
I'm hopeful it might actually survive the night now - I think the real danger is someone will destroy it trying to remove it

First of all using a largely commercial image from a broadway Musical to represent the plight of those poor folks in Calais is an odd choice to say the least.
Showing only a fraction of a video where migrants are being gassed, without context to an overall event, is below Banksy. What is the point of standing against something if you are going to use the same deceitful tactics as them ?
Appart from the bold placement, I find this piece excessively week. I was really hoping it would turn out not to be by Banksy

she would have known about this in advance. As soon as it went up she would have sent the press release out to all the newspapers, blogs, a network of facebook pages and obviously twitter. Thats how pr companies work. Newspapers really do little investigation and those that do get the story wrong. You can bet a dollar that the guardian newspaper for example is on her email list, they were quick off the mark. She will attach photos and a brief explanation on the piece. Its all planned and chorographed so you go up there and takes selfies with it

As I understand it, from the Guardian article, the wider context was that the French police wanted to create a buffer zone between the camp and the motorway.

I am with you on this one Coach. Its well executed, a strong image well chosen with an equally strong message. The placement is relevant and brave and it has brought needed attention to the issue.
On the PR from Jo maybe he wanted to get the important message he was drawing attention to in the public domain quicker rather than him or her wanting to promote his work. It is a current and live issue. Maybe I am being naรฏve but I am surprised at some of the cynical views. I am not sure he needs the publicity.

Obviously if that's your opinion, then fair enough my friend. But I think it's so much better than that. That's art for you I guess. I am with you on this one Coach. Its well executed, a strong image well chosen with an equally strong message. The placement is relevant and brave and it has brought needed attention to the issue.
On the PR from Jo maybe he wanted to get the important message he was drawing attention to in the public domain quicker rather than him or her wanting to promote his work. It is a current and live issue. Maybe I am being naรฏve but I am surprised at some of the cynical views. I am not sure he needs the publicity.

The image of the girl, through it's use in the musical, has become an iconic symbol of the French Revolution.
You could argue the refugees in Calais are causing a new type of revolution, or uprising... and look how they're treated, with tear gas, etc.
It might not be one of Banksy's best, but that's not the point. It's raising an issue and making people talk.
I agree slightly about the video though. In parts the refugees are clearly laughing, rather than running scared, and look like they're up for causing trouble with the police (maybe rightfully so, but it doesn't quite serve the right message IMO)

I was really hoping it would turn out not to be by Banksy First of all using a largely commercial image from a broadway Musical to represent the plight of those poor folks in Calais is an odd choice to say the least. As I understand it, from the Guardian article, the wider context was that the French police wanted to create a buffer zone between the camp and the motorway.
Some of the ingredients (trying to stay neutral here)
- The locals of Calais have been conducting silent marches, begging for the government to step in and help, as their town is dying of this situation. This is peaceful so far, but tension is growing and you can't blame them really
- Some migrants stormed a Ferry terminal further disrupting what is a dying business and adding to the tensions. This is now a daily desperate circus at truck stops, train stations etc...
- The police have been sent to Calais, but in very small numbers compared to what is needed, namely due to "terrorist threat" response in all public places, upcoming taxi strike likely to paralyse Paris, growing unrest and protests in several regions of France (e.g., vent debout movement in Brittany)...a lot of stuff the govt needs to stifle and control before it becomes an issue for them
- Extreme right and left groupe are stirring this as much as they can to their own benefit
While I applaud any attempt to bring attention to this clusterfuck, I also appreciate being thoughtful in the response, which this Banksy pieces is not. It is weak and partial, exactly the opposite of what is required
